Underground WW2 Air Raid Shelter at Vickers Factory Brooklands Weybridge
In 1990 I got the chance to film inside the derelict Vickers underground Air Raid Shelter at the Sand Pits, Brooklands, Weybridge, after youths had broken in. The video footage was stored away for the last twenty two years, but when I recently got the chance to go there again I wanted to share it with you all.
Background
In July 1939 design drawings were produced (for a vast new underground air raid shelter complex in the 'Sandpits' (a former quarry area) opposite Vickers' Brooklands Rd offices. Late in 1939 Construction started of an air raid shelter capable of seating over 5,100 people and also able to protect them against gas attacks.
As some point after this, construction also started on a Bellman hangar at the Southern end of Sandpits and may have been used for dispersed production work. After the war the area including the hanger and the tunnels, was used as a Medical Centre, vehicle servicing and staff car parking. It became abandoned around 1987 with the closer of the factory (now part of British Aerospace).
Today the area is dominated by the David Lloyd Health Centre on the site of the old hangar and the tunnels are now used for storage.

Roger Lloyd Pack, NO MORE WAR 2012 APPEAL, Stop The War Coalition
It seems like we never learn from the mistakes of the past, and despite the tragic failures in Iraq and Afghanistan, the West is unbelievably considering an attack on Iran with all the devastation and loss of life that will entail.
And once again the cost of any attack will be borne, not only by our soldiers and the people of Iran, but by the citizens of Britain, who can ill afford the massive cost such a war would entail.
Why can't our government spend money looking after its own people, rather than destroying the lives of those living in other countries?
The only people consistently offering opposition to the knee jerk reaction of going to war is the Stop the War Coalition but they urgently need funds to support their work. I urge those of you who wish for a more peaceful and harmonious world to donate as much as you can afford to help them sustain their work. - Roger Lloyd Pack
