Kenya - Joss visits The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust
In 2016, we visited a wonderful charity in Kenya called ''The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust''.
The Trust today is the most successful orphan-elephant rescue and rehabilitation program in the world and one of the pioneering conservation organisations for wildlife and habitat protection in East Africa.
The trust has successfully hand-raised over 150 infant elephants and has accomplished its long-term conservation priority by effectively reintegrating orphans back into the wild herds of Tsavo.
Chaired by Daphne Sheldrick, the DSWT is run by Angela Sheldrick, the daughter of David and Daphne, who has been managing all of the Trust’s activities for over a decade.
It was amazing to know that there are people with good hearts in this world. The work being done here to care for the elephants is very humbling. Congratulations to all the people involved in this centre. The baby elephants were really beautiful, and incredible to watch, it was a delight to spend some time and interact with these amazing animals.
The experience was a great introduction to Africa.

Naipoki is a female elephant rescued having fallen down a well when she was 3 months old. Since then, the orphan elephant has been under the cares of the keepers at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Kenya, a foundation dedicated to the protection of Africa's wild elephants and Rhinos. Together, they have become one big family, eating, playing and even sleeping together, creating family links that last for life.
Every two hours, the baby elephants drink a bottle of milk mixed with a special powder and the rest of the time, the elephants play football. Sport keeps them fit!
An Afternoon with Baby Elephants at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust
Our Sr. Web Designer, Scott, and his wife visited the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Nairobi, Kenya, in early November 2016.
Scott: It’s a short 15-minute drive from Giraffe Manor, where we were staying, and the hotel organizes daily group visits for guests for a $50 tax-deductible donation.
We were free to walk among them and pet any that were interested in getting attention. Our 45 minutes passed so quickly, I would have thought it was but a dream if not for the elephant trunk marks on my jacket.
The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust is on the front line of elephant conservation. To date the trust has raised over 150 orphaned infant calves and reintroduced some into the wild that have gone on to have babies of their own.

Elephant Orphanage at David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Nairobi
I visited my orphans again on July 1st at the DSWT orphanage in Nairobi. During the visitor hour from 11am-12noon, it's open to the public. I noticed that it's become much more crowded since my last time 2 years ago, so get there early. Also, I loved seeing so many local school children there. These elephants are their heritage and need their understanding in knowing how important it is to preserve their wildlife in general and stop the poaching and ivory trade. Or there is no future for them. Thank you DSWT for all you have done and continue to do for the orphan elephants, setting an example for the rest of the world with your hard work.
By-the-way,.... some of the orphans seemed a bit naughty today!

Wild - The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust
From the front lines, this film tells the ongoing story of the elephant poaching crisis in Kenya through the heroic work of the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, based in Nairobi.
The piece features Dame Daphne Sheldrick - a pioneer of elephant-human relationship with over 50 years of rescuing elephants orphaned by poaching and rehabilitating them to go back to the wild. We also hear from Julius, an elephant keeper at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust Nursery in Nairobi and Nick Trent, the Anti-Poaching pilot operating in Kenya's massive Tsavo National Park.
At the current rate elephant poaching, with an estimated 1 elephant killed every 15 minutes for its ivory, could see the end of wild elephants in Africa by 2025.
The time to act is now - and there is so much we can do. Begin by getting involved here: iworry.org. A campaign of the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (DSWT), iWorry organised marches around the world in solidarity with the elephants on 04 October 2013 and is calling for a complete ban on international and domestic ivory sales.

Visiting the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust & Giraffe Center - Kenya
Nairobi, Kenya 2019
David Sheldrick Wildtrust - this place is amazing! Entrance to the orphanage is $7 US dollars, CASH only, as they do not accept debit/CC cards. The tour lasts about an hour or so, during feeding time. This organization rescues orphaned elephants, as a result of illegal poaching. At the end of the tour, you have the option of adopting one and spend more one-on-one time.
Giraffe Center - A lot of fun and worth visiting. The entrance fee includes giraffe's kibble food. The center works in rehabilitating & nurturing these animals. You get the chance to be up close and personal with them.
Thanks for watching!

Deterrence - The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust Air Wing
In collaboration with the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), thanks to the pioneering efforts of The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust's Aerial Surveillance Unit, poaching in Tsavo National Park, a stronghold for elephants in Kenya, has fallen by 50%.
Watch this extraordinary partnership and their common mission to put poachers out of business. More than just boots on the ground and eyes in the sky, the coordinated operations of our expanded Air Wing are now able to convince a would-be poacher that the risks of entering the park are no longer worth the reward.

LARRO'S RESCUE
On the 2nd January we were asked to help rescue an orphaned baby elephant, observed alone and struggling within the Ripoi area in the Masai Mara. The little calf was close to a homestead and the community had reported her presence to the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), who having gone to the scene had ascertained the baby was indeed alone and orphaned before contacting the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust.

Ziwadi's Rescue
Ziwadi was just a year old when she was found wandering alone in the Masai Mara region, following young herders with their livestock and any vehicle that came close in a desperate bid for company. Sadly her search for comfort brought her into danger and we were soon requested by KWS and concerned community members fearful of her approaches to bring her into our care after she suffered an arrow attack when she ventured into community land.
