Winter Gardens, Duthie Park Aberdeen
I took a trip to the Duthie Park to see what changes had been made since I was last there. It was quite a cold day, so I popped in to the winter gardens for a while to defrost. There's a lot there and it's well worth a visit... :-)
Extract from Aberdeen City Council website:-
The David Welch Winter Gardens at Duthie Park in Aberdeen are one of Europe's largest indoor gardens and Scotland's third most visited gardens.
It boasts a beautiful floral paradise all year round with many rare and exotic plants on show from all around the world.
Inside, you'll find the Temperate House, Corridor of Perfumes, Fern House, Victorian Corridor, Japanese Garden, Tropical House and Arid House, which has one of the largest collections of Cacti and Succulents in Britain.
Duthie Park, Aberdeen
Duthie Park is probably the most popular park in Aberdeen. I've uploaded a separate video showing off much of the David Welch winter gardens.
Here's some info on the park, courtesy of Wikipedia:-
Duthie Park, situated in Aberdeen, Scotland, by the banks of the River Dee, comprises 44 acres (180,000 m2) of land gifted to the council in 1881 by Lady Elizabeth Duthie of Ruthrieston, in memory of her uncle and of her brother. She purchased the land for £30,000 from the estate of Arthurseat.
The park is noted for the spectacular David Welch winter gardens with tropical and arid houses which contain the second largest collections of bromeliads and of giant cacti respectively in Great Britain (beaten only by the Eden Project in Cornwall, England).
Originally opened in 1899, the greenhouses had to be demolished and rebuilt after suffering storm damage in 1969. Today they are a tranquil place surrounded by such plants as tree ferns, Spanish moss, anthuria, and banana trees.
Within the gardens are railings salvaged from the south side of the major bridge in the middle of the city's Union Street. These feature unusual metal cats, derived from the city coat of arms, and were saved when the side of the bridge was developed for retail units in the mid-20th century.
Outside the winter garden is the Japanese garden, opened in 1987 to commemorate the dead of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
A £5 million pound refurbishment, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Aberdeen City Council is almost complete. The original 1883 plans were consulted in order to restore some of the long-lost features.

Aberdeen is a port city in northeast Scotland, where the Dee and Don rivers meet the North Sea. With an offshore petroleum industry, the city is home to an international population. It's also known as the ‘Granite City’ for its many enduring grey-stone buildings. The 19th-century Marischal College is typical – a monumental Victorian landmark that’s now headquarters of the City Council.
Aberdeen is Scotland's third most populous city, one of Scotland's 32 local government council areas and the United Kingdom's 37th most populous built-up area. Nicknames include the Granite City, the Grey City and the Silver City with the Golden Sands. During the mid-18th to mid-20th centuries, Aberdeen's buildings incorporated locally quarried grey granite, which can sparkle like silver because of its high mica content.
Aberdeen received Royal Burgh status from David I of Scotland (1124–53), transforming the city economically. The city's two universities, the University of Aberdeen, founded in 1495, and Robert Gordon University, which was awarded university status in 1992, make Aberdeen the educational centre of the north-east of Scotland. The traditional industries of fishing, paper-making, shipbuilding, and textiles have been overtaken by the oil industry and Aberdeen's seaport. Aberdeen Heliport is one of the busiest commercial heliports in the world and the seaport is the largest in the north-east of Scotland.
Aberdeen has won the Britain in Bloom competition a record-breaking ten times, and hosts the Aberdeen International Youth Festival, a major international event which attracts up to 1000 of the most talented young performing arts companies. In 2015, Mercer named Aberdeen the 57th most liveable city in the world, as well as the fourth most liveable city in Britain. In 2012, HSBC named Aberdeen as a leading business hub and one of eight 'super cities' spearheading the UK's economy, marking it as the only city in Scotland to receive this accolade.
Aberdeen Airport (ABZ), at Dyce in the north of the city, serves domestic and international destinations. The Dee Estuary, Aberdeen's harbour, has continually been improved. Starting out as a fishing port. Aberdeen is connected to the UK National Cycle Network, and has a track to the south connecting to cities such as Dundee and Edinburgh. National Express operate express coach services to London twice daily.

City Snapshot: Aberdeen in Winter
Aberdeen always sparkles in the winter sun, mostly thanks to the glittering buildings that give it the title of the ‘Granite City’. The city has many offerings at this time of year. Visit the hauntingly beautiful Crathes Castle or admire the spellbinding nature of the David Welch Winter Gardens, followed by an indulgent hot chocolate at the Cocoa Ooze café. There are more gastronomic delights to be sampled at the Silver Darling restaurant when night falls. Find out more about a city break in Aberdeen here:

Just when I was coming back from The David Welch Winter Garden's at Duthie Park, after doing an Interview with a trainee Journalist regarding Spike The Cactus. I noticed that there were blue flashing lights from which I Immediately thought was an emergency vehicle.
As I got closer, I thought it was part of a shop logo or something fallen down, but as I looked at it I realised it was the lights that were suspended from about 10 feet or so from the ground of Union Street.
Sorry for the quality, I was on the bus at the time.
No-one was reported injured in this incident.
Statement released by Aberdeen City Council:
A string of Aberdeen City Council's Christmas lights has come down on Union Street in the high winds.
No one was injured.
The problem has occurred because a granite block in the building the top wire was attached to was dislodged.
The lights were off at the time.
Aberdeen City Council's street lighting department and rapid response team are on scene.
The street remains open.

Stonehaven Harbour & Beach - Scotland
The coastal village of Stonehaven is popular not only for its proximity to Dunnottar Castle but also for its quaint harbour and walk along the beach promenade.
