Japanese Garden in winter time
Florida Torreya to Ohio's Dawes Arboretum
Dawes Arboretum (Newark, Ohio) received ten seeds of the endangered conifer, Torreya taxifolia, from Torreya Guardians. The seeds were donated to our group by Biltmore Gardens for further volunteer distribution. Harvested October 2006, the seeds were processed by Torreya Guardian Lee Barnes before mailing to volunteers. Dawes Arboretum germinated 10 seeds in its greenhouse, and the successful potted seedlings were outplanted in spring of 2013 and 2014.
This video of 17 May 2015 is part of an ongoing monitoring program to learn just how far north, and in what habitats, the Florida species of genus Torreya is capable of growing in this rapidly changing climate.
Connie Barlow films and narrates this 23-minute video. Possible learnings are: (1) A full deciduous canopy of oak and maple seems to be superb habitat for Torreya in central Ohio. (2) Exposure to full sun (winter desiccation might be most destructive) and especially to polar winds — such as occurred the previous winter —are very stressful to this species.
Also valuable are the segments that compare Florida Torreya's leaf and branch morphology against two sister species native to Asia that have been planted in Dawes Arboretum:: Torreya grandis (China) and Torreya nucifera (Japan).
