Most Packed Swimming Pool Ever in China Dead Sea
Crowded conditions have not put off over a million people from heading to this giant Chinese swimming pool. The saltwater pool, known as China's 'Dead Sea' in Daying county, Sichuan province, was a riot of colour as the masses grabbed their rubber rings and descended.
China's Dead Sea swimming pool in Sichuan - no comment
Thousands of swimmers filled an indoor wave pool to the brim in southwest China's Sichuan Province, creating a scene resembling boiling dumplings as visitors try to escape the unrelenting heat wave.
Known as China's Dead Sea, the saltwater pool located in an amusement park in Sichuan's Daying County is attracting more than 12,000 tourists every day, as temperatures in parts of the province hit 41 degrees Celsius this week.
Nearly 15,000 people visited the pool on Saturday, almost triple what was envisaged by the pool's designers.
There's so many people here, it's like a cauldron of boiling dumplings, said one of the swimmers at the crowded pool.
In response to rising safety concerns, pool administrators said they have taken steps to prevent any danger.
There are six to eight people dealing with emergencies and two to three lifeguards patrolling on the stage. Also, we have sent about a dozen staff workers into the crowd to watch over visitors around the pool, said Wang Tongming, manager of the China's Dead Sea Water Amusement Park.
Wang said that a clinic has also been set up near the wave pool to deal with minor injuries.
According to Xinhua news agency, the pool received over a million visitors last summer.

Man falls to his death after son-in-law opens elevator doors early
Surveillance footage from a residential building in Cengong county, southwest China's Guizhou Province shows two men waiting for the elevator to arrive. The son-in-law got impatient and used a key to unlock the elevator door and look inside the shaft, but then the father-in-law walked into the shaft, apparently thinking the lift had arrived and fell to his death.
The tragic incident triggered a heated debate online about whether it was by accident or premeditated. The son-in-law seems very professional and knew where the elevator lock was. I don't know its place, said a netizen on Chinese social media platform Weibo. The son-in-law, surnamed Zhou, claims to be the community's electrician. I forgot to tell my father-in-law not to walk in and I didn’t stop him, Zhou explained. The elevator lock is used by firefighters during emergencies and should never be opened otherwise.

Why so many fish are dying in the Gulf of Mexico
A brief environmental video essay that looks at the Dead Zone in the Gulf Mexico and the effect of industrial agriculture, fertilizer, and manure on America's waterways. Specifically, I trace the oxygen deprivation caused by algal blooms in the Dead Zone back to overuse of fertilizers and runoff from conventional farms near the Mississippi.

Footage: Fish-fest as winter fishing begins on frozen NE China lake
The annual winter fishing festival on Lianhuan Lake in Dorbod Mongolian Autonomous County in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province started on Saturday. When the net was pulled out from the icy waters, tens of thousands of fish surfaced. The biggest weighed about 20-25 kilograms, while the smallest, over 2.5 kilograms. The local fishermen considered it a good 50,000-kilogram harvest.
According to head fisherman Li Kewen, the net was carefully designed to protect the sustainability of the lake. The net's holes are big, so we only catch the big fish, leaving smaller ones out, so as to maintain a healthy ecosystem, said Li Kewen.
Winter fishing has been an annual event on Lianhuan Lake dating back to ancient times, but unlike using traditional methods such as cutting holes in the ice and using manpower to place the net, the fishermen here use machines.
The festival will run for a week, allowing visitors from across the country to see for themselves the unique culture of winter fishing.

Here, Living With Dead Bodies for Weeks—Or Years—Is Tradition | National Geographic
On the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, the Torajan people believe that a person is not truly dead until water buffalo have been sacrificed at their funeral, serving as the vehicle to the afterlife. Until that time, the bodies are may be kept at the family's home for weeks, months or years and are fed and cared for as if they were alive. Some Torajans continue their relationship with the dead through a ma'nene' ceremony, a type of second funeral in which families bring out their ancestors every few years and change their clothes and clean their bodies and crypts.

THE WEEK July 17: The Knight, The Drunk and The Wench
Hey humans, get a pool
Summer has struck China with a vengeance. It's been so hot that in the Dead Sea in Daying County in Southwest China's Sichuan province, 8,000 tourists piled into the 30,000 square meter Dead Sea pool. Temperatures approached 40 degrees Celsius in Beijing and other parts of the country, and people were doing whatever they could to stay cool. The pool was so crowded that reportedly people were piled up on top of each other.
What's that sound you hear? It's the laughter of pet sea lion that unlike these ridiculous humans, had a luxury swimming pool all to itself. The sea lion, owned by a rich kid, was treated by its owner to a luxury hotel's swimming pool in Qindao, Shandong province, for its birthday. The animal enjoyed the ample pool so much that it refused to get out. Talk about being pampered and spoiled.
Brewtroleum
People, there are better ways to beat the heat. Has anybody heard of beer? Speaking of beer…Now you can drink and drive.
A brewery in New Zealand gives new meaning to being tanked by becoming the first in the world to use beer as petrol.
Brewer DB Export has produced the first biofuel using lager by-products, mixing 30,000 liters of ethanol with 300,000 liters of premium petrol. Sean O'Donnell, head of domestic beer marketing at DB, said:Like many great Kiwi inventions, Brewtroleum was an idea sparked over a few beers. In other words, it's likely some of the people who came up with this idea were, well…friggin' drunk!
The Knight, The Drunk and The Wench
Speaking of drunks, a 22-year-old apparent idiot is facing theft charges and resisting arrest after he tried to steal and run off with a sword at a renaissance festival in Colorado, during a jousting performance.
A very drunk Connor Ward was chased by a woman dressed as a wench, who tackled him to the ground and held him in a headlock for at least 5 minutes until police arrived. As the wench held him, Ward kept laughing, finding the whole thing amusing. The woman's husband, dressed in a knight's costume, then showed up and held down the wannabe court jester until security officers arrived.
Talk about your knight in shiny armor.

Exploding sperm whale Carcass caught on camera in The Faroe Islands!
A camera captured the moment a sperm whale carcass, which washed up in the Faroe Islands, exploded. The clip, which was shown of Faroese Television, has since gone viral, racking up millions of hits on YouTube alone. The dead whale had been lying on the beach for two days, after getting stuck in the waters between two islands, when marine biologist Bjarni Mikkelsen was sent to cut it open. As he made incisions in the whale's side the carcass exploded due to a buildup of methane gas from the decomposition creating a loud sound and releasing a pungent smell. It is reported that a local museum will collect the skeleton and put it on display. Report by Laurie Blake.

Thousands pack Chinese wave pools to escape summer heat
Tens of thousands of people in southwest China's Sichuan Province tried to escape the heat this weekend by heading to various water parks.
The province's inland location means it has no beaches, so citizens turned to artificial sources of water to cool themselves down.
One park in Daying County, Suining City has seen over 15,000 visitors a day, as tourists came from miles around to experience the waves thrown up by the park's wave machine.
With a variety of slides and other attractions, the parks have proved a haven for thrill-seeking visitors looking for a way to keep cool as amidst souring temperatures.

The Salton Sea: The Skeleton in California's Closet
What happened to the Salton Sea in California? In my first travel documentary about this strange yet fascinating place in California's Imperial Valley, I explore the sea and surrounding communities of Bombay Beach, Slab City, East Jesus, and Salton City.
The area was also the inspiration for the fictional desert town of Sandy Shores which appears in the popular video game Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online. In the game, Trevor Philips acquires a small landing strip in the area which may be in reference to the Salton City airport.
I encourage you to read more about the lake’s history and the current ecological crisis it has become. You can find an interesting article written by Ian James and Sammy Roth on USA Today here: Thanks for watching! I hope to post more of these as I travel!
***CORRECTION*** The Salton Bay Yacht Club was demolished in 2000, not the 80's.

Artist communities thrive along the disappearing Salton Sea
California’s Salton Sea was once hailed as a miracle in the desert. Located about 40 miles south of Palm Springs, it’s the state’s largest inland body of water. But today, the sea is no longer the early 20th century fishing and recreation hotspot it once was -- it’s drying up. Instead, it has become a haven for artists. NewsHour Weekend’s Christopher Booker reports.
