Pasighat, Arunachal Pradesh, Daying Ering Wildlife Sanctuary - Amazing Changes
These are first pictures of the recently revived Daying Ering Wildlife Sanctuary, Pasighat, East Siang District. As can be seen in the video, wildlife is again thriving in the Sanctuary. All this has been possible due to the efforts of the Forest Department (Wildlife division) led by Divisional Forest Officer, Mr. Tasi Mize. And it needs mention here that these recent successes shouldn't make all of us complacent, as there are miles and miles to travel for the Sanctuary, before it regains its bygone glory days, when even Rhinos were believed to have inhabitated the forest.
The revival of the Sanctuary would be one test, the present generation will be judged, by the coming Future Generations. Atleast, this is one, I hope, we can do for them - preserving the exquisite natural resource that almighty Donyi Polo has bestowed upon us, right at our lap, only few kilometers away from the town, Pasighat.

Pasighat News:- In a whirlwind visit to D. Ering Memorial Wildlife Sanctuary today, A.K. Shukla,
In a whirlwind visit to D. Ering Memorial Wildlife Sanctuary today, A.K. Shukla, Principal Chief Conservator of Forest, Environment, Forest & Climate Change cum Nodal Officer of State CAMPA, visited Jeepghat Beat of Anchalghat Range and took stock of the overall condition of the Sanctuary. Shukla was accompanied by Divisional Forest Officer, Tasang Taga, Member State Board for Wildlife, M. Tayeng, Range Officer, Y. Rina and Dy. Forest Ranger, O. Perme. On visiting the sanctuary Shukla inspected the flood ravaged part of the Jeepghat Beat from where slight rise of water level in Siang River overflows into the Sanctuary as excessive siltation on the river bed of Siang river has raised the water level close to the landmass sanctuary. Showing concern over the change of entire water level due to excessive siltation, Shukla said that, a major embankment project or dredging of silt deposit in the course of Siang river would be required in which Central government’s financial assistance will be required. “Major flood protection work or dredging of riverbed won’t be possible by funding from CAMPA as the project will require huge funding nearing Rs. 40-50 Crores. Such major project can be possible if political leaders like Lok Sabha MP Ninong Ering and others take up the matter at New Delhi”, added Shukla.

PASIGHAT, Dec 07: The intensified patrolling team of Sibiyamukh Range of D. Ering Memorial Wildlife Sanctuary here has achieved a major success in arresting a habitual hunter, one Sanjoy Litin originally from Ngorlung village present living near Veterinary dept office, High region, Pasighat.
Informing about the arrest and seizures, Sibiyamukh Range Officer, Domek Koyu said that, his patrolling team heard about a gun shot in the wee hours of 5th December near Balun area which alerted the staffs about the presence of hunters/poachers inside the Sanctuary and on intensive search drive of the location four hunters were intercepted in the intervening night of 5th and 6th December 2019. While three others fled away taking the advantage of darkness, but one Sanjay Litin was arrested on the spot. A hunted female Wild Boar, one 12 Bore SBBL Gun bearing No. Choke 183, 1 KG 420-7500 with one live and three used up Cartridges were seized from him, informed RFO Koyu. “As per the statement made by Sanjay Litin, his three other accomplices who fled away are Mesu Mize from Oyan Village, Kale Thapa from Pame, Jampani and Jongai from Jampani area. The seized gun is said to be of Mesu Mize who is a more serious habitual hunter and he have been caught earlier also and let off by the previous DFO. The two other Nepali community are also a habitual hunter”, Koyu. While Tani Jerang, a Forest Guard who led the patrolling team at wee hour at this shivering winter season said that, they are keeping close vigil of any hunting attempts inside their jurisdiction and are always on high alert.
When asked from the arrested hunter about the illegal hunting inside the riverine Wildlife Sanctuary where hunting is strictly prohibited, Litin said that it was Kale Thapa who came to request him for hunting at Pasighat. “It was my third time doing hunting activities inside the Sanctuary but from now onward I will never repeat the crime and I may be killed inside the Sanctuary if repeated next time”, confessed Litin seemingly regretting on getting caught.
Meanwhile, Divisional Forest Officer, Tasang Taga who have directed for intensive patrolling and checking of any wildlife offenses in and around the Sanctuary has said that, such serious and habitual hunters/poachers are real threat to the rich flora & fauna of the Sanctuary and assured zero tolerance and leniency from his department as soft approaches from the part of previous DFO despite getting caught them doing hunting activities inside the Sanctuary have indirectly encouraged hunters like Sanjay Litin, Mesu Mize and Kale Thapa to repeat hunting. “I appeal every conscious individuals and societies to discourage illegal hunting inside the Sanctuary and rather help the government in preserving rich flora & fauna as heritage so that the Sanctuary could be made as a future Wildlife Tourist destination like that of Kaziranga National Park which gives numerous job opportunities to local populations of fringe areas”, added Taga who is a trained Wildlife Officer from Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun. Taga has also asked other Ranges like Anchalghat and Borguli to enhance tight security and vigilance as hunting attempts are mostly reported during dry/winter season after Siang river flood recedes from Monsoon season. These hunters entered the Sanctuary from Anchalghat Range side taking negligence of duty from the Range Officer, Anchalghat who is at the verge of supernuation and is not capable of doing field duties and shy away of mobilizing teams for intensive patrolling. So, an active and young RO is required to be posted in Anchalghat Range.
Meanwhile, Adi Baane Kebang Secretary General, Okom Yosung has also lauded the effort of the D. Ering Wildlife Sanctuary authorities in arresting the habitual hunters/poachers and has also appealed for early arrest of rest of three co-hunters. “ABK has already taken resolution on banning any kind of hunting in and around the restricted jurisdiction of D. Ering Wildlife Sanctuary which is a great asset of entire Adi community and the state. “Excessive hunting outside the Wildlife Sanctuary has already taken large toll of wildlife population in the region due to which many of wildlife species are on the verge of extinction today, so we all must at least resolve to protect the rich wildlife of inside the Sanctuary and no clan, society or political leader should try to safeguard and defend the illegal hunters and we strongly condemns such attempts of anyone.
A case has been registered against Litin and three others vide Pasighat PS Case No. 239/2019 U/S 428/34 IPC R/W Section 51 of Wildlife Protection Act R/W Section 25/27 Arms Act and three absconding habitual hunters will be arrested soon, informed Atan Taki, Officer-in-Charge, Pasighat PS this evening.

*Pasighat is the land of the mighty Siang and indigenous hanging bridges. A waterfall graces the mountain cliffs and chills the vicinity. The places of attraction in the town are:
The Daying Ering Wildlife Sanctuary in Arunachal Pradesh, India, is one of the most popular wildlife parks of the state. Spread over an area of 190 square kilometres (73 sq mi), alluvial grasslands form the major area and wooded areas constitute about 15%. The rest is water. Present land of the sanctuary was mostly donated by the mebo and monngu Banngos. It was, is, and will always be popularly called Jopong, which was a named given by locals and land owners in memory and honour of RUTUM JOTAN Pertin during 1790s. A term coined by Pertin-PANNGINNG friendship and accepted by all since last 225 years.
Pangin is about 60 km from Pasighat, and connected by road. It stands at a point where River Siyom meets River Siang and the blue waters of Siyom meet the green Siang. Besides above, the district is endowed with some scenic locations particularly on both sides of the Siang. There are also a number of rare plants and herbs which are of medicinal importance. Botanists and Zoologists can have ample scope for study of the rich plant and wildlife resources.
Bodak Scenic Area: The Bodak-Mebo-Jengging Scenic Area is a popular picnic spot for tourists from neighbouring states, towns and the residents of Pasighat. The scenic area is a large forested area with villages, agricultural lands within, at about 15 kilometres away from the Pasighat main town. The scenic area is along the highway starting from the Siang Bridge and diverges to Mebo village on the right hand side and to Jengging village on the left hand side. The road to Jenning is much more frequented because of the vistas of the Siang river from the road. Youngsters are frequently seen going on a long drive in this area. The area is also home to the Mïdu Lereng stone monolith. Villagers of the area have shown concern about the garbage generated and destruction to the environment from frequent tourist visits and many regular picnic spots are now taxed by NGOs who maintain the pristine environment. Village level governments of the nearby villages have been very critical over the matter and have erected notices, warnings and appointed members of the village on a rotational basis to keep an eye for possible damages to property, environment, and poaching and trespassing. There are fines in place for the defaulters.
Kekar Monying: A mountain cliff near Rottung is an important historical place because it was here that the Adi put up a strong resistance against the British in 1911. The war was a part of a punitive expedition undertaken by the British for murdering Noel Williamson, a political officer in the previous year by Matmur Jamoh, a native of Yagrung village.
Komsing: A village on the left bank of the Siang is the place of Williamson's murder. A stone epitaph bearing the name of Noel. Williamson still lies near the Siang.
Komlighat used to be a river port at an earlier time. The ghat marks the area of the colonial town of Pasighat which has been submerged into the Siang river following a flood and the river changing its course. Now a popular evening spot, the area is frequented by families, youngsters, and the health conscious for jogging, yoga, etc. The spot is also popular for its street food sold by vendors in the area. The ghat provides a wonderful view of the river and the hills surrounding the Pasighat plains. The distant hills are covered with snow in winters. The river bank in the area is very close to the floodplain, which makes for an excellent view with a large stretch of riverine beach. Paradoxically, the lower flood plain also makes it susceptible to flooding during the monsoon and thus, has rows of embankments and other flood control mechanisms *

Authorities in Arunachal Pradesh's East Siang dsitrict have started evacuation from a few of the most vulnerable areas in the wake of the flash flood threat triggered by a blockade in the Yarlung Tsangpo river in China due to landslides.
Evacuation orders has been issued to the staff of the Daying Ering Wildlife Sanctuary, which is spread over riverine islands and is around 15 kms from Pasighat.
