Easter at the Daylesford Spa Country Railway: Trains Downunder
Easter Sunday is the busiest day of the year at the Daylesford Spa Country Railway in central Victoria, Australia.
With the re-opening of the line to Bullarto earlier in the year, Easter 2014 saw the return of a two train operation with DERM 63RM running the full length of the line to Bullarto while Tulloch railcar DRC40 operated shorter shuttle trips to Musk. Y159 was also on display at the station for visitors to get a closer look at a diesel locomotive.
This video features 63RM and DRC40 operating between Daylesford, Musk and Bullarto in the morning as well as Y159 shunting to and from the shed and notching up and down at the station.

Daylesford Spa Country Railway - Australian Trains, Victoria
Riding the DERM from Musk to Daylesford.
Brief History Of The Class.
In 1928 the Victorian Railways expanded their fleet of railmotors with more powerful units designed by the Electro-Motive Company, USA. These were able to haul a substantial trailer and even some goods wagons. Ten of these units entered service between 1928 and 1931, numbered 55RM to 64RM. They were powered by a single petrol engine of 220hp driving a generator that supplied power to the electric motors on the axles of the power bogie. Officially they were known as Petrol Electric Rail Motors, but they were also known as P.E.R.Ms or P.Es.
In the 1930s these cars were running to places such as Geelong, Yarram, Lancefield, Hopetoun, Maffra and the branchlines radiating out of Bendigo. At the height of the Great Depression between 1931 and 1936 they ran the service between Woodend and Daylesford.
In the early 1950s the petrol engines were replaced by two GM diesels and they became universally known as D.E.R.Ms. They continued to run branchline services to places like Mansfield until these lines closed in the 1970s. After this they were often found on services to Sunbury, Bacchus Marsh and Seymour. They were gradually withdrawn through the 1980s with the last in 1991, 60 years after entering service.
Daylesford Spa Country Railway - Heritage Railmotors | 27/12/15
Hello all!
Welcome to a video of the Daylesford Spa Country Railway.
On December 27th, 2015, I decided to head up to the rural town of Daylesford, as the Daylesford Spa Country Railway (DSCR) was running an extended timetable. Which is where they had the 280HP Walker railmotor 91RM doing the usual Daylesford to Bullarto service, as well as DERM 63RM running a Daylesford to Musk service in the gap between the Walker arriving and departing Daylesford.

DERM Railmotor in the snow; RM63 at Bullarto - Daylesford Spa Country Railway
On the 19th August 2018 an overnight cold front blasted Victoria with snow down to 500 metres. This offered a rare opportunity to see some snow on the Daylesford Spa Country Railway on a running day, an opportunity I couldn't resist!
In this video we see DERM RM63 arrive and depart Bullarto in a winter wonderland! With a height of 747.4m above sea level (2452 ft), Bullarto is the highest active railway station in Victoria.
DERM RM63 is a Victorian Railways Diesel Electric Rail Motor (DERM). Based on the American 'Doodlebug' railcars, the DERM's are arguably Victoria's most successful railmotor. 10 were built from 1928 to 1931 as Petrol Electric Rail Motor's (PERM), with the last not being withdrawn until 1991. They were converted into DERM's in the early 1950's. Most DERM's have survived into preservation in some form, with RM63 regularly providing service on the Daylesford Spa Country Railway.

Diesel Electric Rail Motor in the Snow at Daylesford Spa Country Railway
On Sunday 11 August 2019, an unusually cold weather system dubbed a polar blast spread right across south east Australia and brought snow as low as 500m
The Daylesford Spa Country Railway was operating their regular passenger services with restored EMC designed diesel electric rail motor 63RM and this weather event offered the rare opportunity to capture footage in high resolution 4K of an Australian train operating entirely in the snow.
The line commences at Daylesford at an altitude of 616m and rises to 747m above sea level at Bullarto, currently the highest railway station in Victoria. With the entire line being above the snow line, Daylesford saw a dusting of several cm while Bullarto had a healthy 10-12cm which stayed on the ground for the entire day.
The video commences with 63RM arriving into the platform for the first service of the day, followed by footage from the train as the vintage rail motor climbs the 1 in 50 grades to Bullarto. At Bullarto, we see 63RM depart and then arrive back into the next station before capturing further lineside footage at Dolphins Rd and near Musk.
This historic vehicle was built in 1930 at the VR's Newport Workshops and is based on the St Louis car company design with power equipment from Electro Motive. In the 1950's the Winton petrol engine was replaced with two Detroit Diesel 6-71 engines.

Two railcars at Daylesford (A day at the Daylesford Spa Country Railway) | RM 63 & DRC 40
On the 7th of January 2017, the DSCR (Daylesford Spa Country Railway) ran a very special event due to a rather sad one before it. The railway's main source of power 91 RM required repairs on the day and due to this RM 63 and DCR 40 were ran on the 11:00, 12:15 & 13:45 trains from Daylesford to Bullarto and back with RM 63 doing the rest of the services for the day alone.

Ganger's Trolleys on the Daylesford Spa Country Railway
On Saturday 2nd of January I was in Daylesford when the tourist railway was running Ganger's Trolleys along the line. The video comprises of a few shots I took along the journey. It's heaps of fun - very different from a trip in the railmotors that the railway usually runs. I'd definitely recommend heading up there next time they're running!
