Virginia & Truckee #18 Dayton -- 1873 Steam Locomotive
This 4-4-0 was built by the Central Pacific Railroad in Sacramento, California. It went into service on the V&T line in 1873.
It spent much of the early 20th century on snowplow duty for the V&T.
The Dayton was sold to Paramount Pictures in 1938 and had a long career in the movies until finally being sold back to the State of Nevada in 1974. It was not in operable condition, and the Nevada State Railroad Museum chose to restore the Inyo to working order over the Dayton. Thus the Dayton was simply restored cosmetically to look as it did in 1882.
Now it sits on permanent display at the Comstock History Center in Virginia City, Nevada.
Wayward Wind_Eddy Arnold_Lyrics_Virginia City_Nevada
This is my favorite town to visit in the United States...Virginia City, Nevada because it turns back the time to mid 1800's...This town was built in the gold and silver rush days where gambling and prostitution is still legal today...I collect Carson City silver dollars from the mint there from the 1800's as I love real silver and gold coins...I wear a 1911 five dollar gold coin ring...I make vintage real silver coin necklaces and bolo's taken from these mines and make crystal jewelry necklaces and earrings for friends for my fun and give them away...I was taught by Apache Indians in Arizona as I was friends with the Chief back in 1970 and all the men Indians make fabulous jewelry...I'm also into turquoise and Branch red coral...
Oh, the wayward wind is a restless wind
A restless wind that yearns to wander
And I was born the next of kin
The next of kin to the wayward wind
In a lonely shack by a railroad track
I spent my younger days
And I guess the sound of the outward bound
Made me a slave to my wand'ring ways
And the wayward wind is a restless wind
A restless wind that yearns to wander
And I was born the next of kin
The next of kin to the wayward wind
Oh I met a girl in a border town
I vowed we'd never part
Though I tried my best to settle down
She's now alone with a broken heart
And the wayward wind is a restless wind
A restless wind that yearns to wander
And I was born the next of kin
The next of kin to the wayward wind
The next of kin to the wayward wind

Abandoned Business Buildings on North Main Street in North Dayton, Ohio
This is North Main Street in North Dayton about 2 miles north of Downtown Dayton and has fallen into serious decay in recent years and is danger of being lost as a neighborhood. Some of the streets that are close to here like Santa Clara, Victor, Fountain, Delaware Avenues where 80% of the houses on those streets are vacant and oneday the city could come through and just demolish the entire neighborhood and buy the few remaining homeowners out once they realize the neighborhood is not worth saving and cost the city way too much money in the way of city services like, Fire, Police, Water, Electrical, and Street Maintenance and focus that stuff on areas where people are actually living these days

1957.11.27 Voodoos Shatter Transcontinental Record
50th anniversary of Air Force mission remembered ... 11/30/2007 - DAYTON, Ohio (AFPN) -- On Nov. 27, 1957, at 6:59 a.m., six USAF pilots took off from Los Angeles and began what would be called Operation Sun Run. On that day, three new transcontinental speed records were established, and the speed and range of the McDonnell RF-101C was showcased. Years later, this mission would be remembered not as a significant contribution to war, but as a significant peacetime achievement for a growing Air Force.
Almost to the exact minute, 50 years later, one of the pilots and several family members of those involved in Operation Sun Run gathered at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force to present a painting commemorating the anniversary of this historic event. The painting, titled Schrek's CIN MIN on the SUN-RUN by aviation artist William S. Phillips, depicts then Capt. Ray Schrecengost's RF-101C, nicknamed CIN MIN, flying above the clouds. The CIN MIN was named for the pilot's two daughters: Cindy and Mindy.
I didn't know I would be a part of history, said Cindy Miller, during the unveiling ceremony. I just thought I was the 'CIN' part of the name.
The painting brought back many memories for retired Lt. Col. Robert Burkhart, one of the pilots during the mission. I was keyed up the night before the flight, said Colonel Burkhart who was a captain at the time. I probably got less sleep than most nights.
Colonel Burkhart said he was only doing his duty and he didn't realize how significant Operation Sun Run would be. I never thought it would be remembered 50 years later.
Ms. Miller, who was only 5 years old at the time, remembers the day very well. Mom told me to look to the left because my father would be flying in soon. I remember dad landing and my sister, who was only 2 years old, being lifted up to the cockpit to say hi to him. I was so awestruck.
Ms. Miller's father, who retired from the Air Force as a colonel, was selected as lead pilot during Operation Sun Run. He established three new transcontinental speed records from Los Angeles to New York (beating John Glenn's record), from New York to Los Angeles and round trip. His record fell shortly thereafter when his time was bettered by other pilots on the Sun Run.
Colonel Schrecengost's brother, Sam, also in attendance at the ceremony, said it was very difficult to get anything out of Ray about the mission before he passed away. My brother wasn't about awards or records, he said. He was a team person. Getting everyone involved was his way of passing credit back.
The original RF-101C CIN MIN is on display in the Modern Flight Gallery at the museum. A giclee print of the painting will now be placed in front of the aircraft and next to the group's speed trophy.
With this year being the 60th anniversary of the U.S. Air Force, we believe this donation is truly fitting as it depicts a significant event in Air Force history, said museum senior curator Terry Aitken during the unveiling ceremony. It's also fitting to be displayed in the museum. Our mission is to be 'the keeper of their stories' and this painting truly enhances the story, the history and the significance of the people who were a part of Operation Sun Run.

United States Hydraulic Elevator-GSR Bowling Center-Reno, NV
Located at Grand Sierra Resort and Casino, this is the only US Square button elevator. It is very surprising that this one has remained original throughout all the years. The service elevators are still original though. The cab was recently redone. The buttons have seen better days. You sometimes would need to mash them in pretty good for them to work. It's always nice to find a US elevator.

The Most Exciting Street In America - Route 66.
California is home to so many beautiful modern attractions that one of the things that often gets lost in the shuffle is the history of this fantastic state. One of the most interesting parts of that history to me is that it was the end point for Route 66, the mother road. I have set out to drive this road in separate parts, all through California and in doing so I have already found wonderful places like the Original McDonalds Museum and Elmer's Bottle Tree Ranch. This video spotlights the attractions I found when driving from Victorville to Amboy, California. They are in order of the things you would see heading from Victorville to Amboy.
The German comedy movie filmed at the Bagdad Café was named after the Café: Bagdad Cafe (Out of Rosenheim) by Percy Adlon (1987). At the heart of the California desert, the weary Bagdad Cafe, its motel and service station welcome travelers, backpackers, and a whole cast of original characters, direct on Route 66. One day, a strange German woman magically appears to change everything.
Also the following movies were filmed on Route 66:
Paris, Texas by Wim Wenders (1984). A man that everyone thought dead for several years appears walking alone out of the desert. He has only one thing in mind: returning to Paris.
Little Miss Sunshine by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris (2006). Burlesque and atypical family travelling on an off-age van between New Mexico and California to lead seven years Olive to a beauty pageant finals.
Easy Rider Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper and Terry Southern (1969). Two biker-hippies roam the southern United States and present a subversive portrayal of America at that time. The film was shot along Route 66.
Thelma & Louise by Ridley Scott (1991). Between Arkansas and Arizona, weekend girlfriends Thelma and Louise get out of control on a bloody and ill-fated escape.
