Daytona Beach is a city in Volusia County, Florida, United States. It lies about 51 miles (82.1 km) northeast of Orlando, 86 miles (138.4 km) southeast of Jacksonville, and 242 miles (389.5 km) northwest of Miami. In the 2010 U.S. Census, it had a population of 61,005. It is a principal city of the Deltona–Daytona Beach–Ormond Beach, FL metropolitan statistical area, which was home to 590,289 people in 2010. Daytona Beach is also a principal city of the Fun Coast region of Florida. The city is historically known for its beach where the hard-packed sand allows motorized vehicles to drive on the beach in restricted areas. This hard-packed sand made Daytona Beach a mecca for motorsports, and the old Daytona Beach Road Course hosted races for over 50 years. This was replaced in 1959 by Daytona International Speedway. The city is also the headquarters for NASCAR. Daytona Beach hosts large groups of out-of-towners that descend upon the city for various events, notably Speedweeks in early February when over 200,000 NASCAR fans come to attend the season-opening Daytona 500. Other events include the NASCAR Coke Zero 400 race in July, Bike Week in early March, Biketoberfest in late October, and the 24 Hours of Daytona endurance race in January.

In this episode of Cheap Family Travel ( Nick, Regan, Maggie, and Kate visited the Daytona Speedway in Dayton Beach Florida. Daytona Fl has been the racing mecca of the United States since 1902 when people started racing on the wide, smooth, compact sand of Daytona Beach. Early pioneers tested their inventions and land speed records were set. William Vanderbilt hit 92 mph in 1904 and Malcolm Campbell set the last record at 276.8 mph in 1935. This early racing history lead William France Sr, the founder of NASCAR, to start work on the Daytona race track in 1958. When you visit, you can join Daytona Speedway Tours or visit the track on your own. Check out the Dayton Speedway seating, the 31 degree bank turns, the 180 acre infield with Fanzone, and of course huge Lake Lloyd. Make sure you walk the Champions Walk of Fame, pay your respects at the statue of Dale Earnhardt, and stop by the gift shop to pick up your NASCAR merchandise. There are great displays on the amazing engineering that went into building this impressive venue. If you're going to see a car race in Florida, this is the place to do it. The Dayton International Speedway Daytona Beach Florida is home to the most prestigious car race in NASCAR, the Daytona 500. We had a great time racing our car down the original Daytona Beach Speedway on the beach.
