FUKUOKA Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine - 4k walk video / japan happy new year / japan Countryside Shrine
Walking videos.
Walked in the new year
Dazaifu (大宰府) was established in the late 7th century and served as the administrative center of the entire island of Kyushu for over 500 years. The city was built slightly inland from Hakata, whose port was one of the main points of interaction between Japan and mainland Asia. Although the imperial court ruled the country from the Kansai Region, Dazaifu was pivotal for Japan's diplomatic relations and organizing the country's defenses.
Nowadays, Dazaifu is a small, quiet city on the outskirts of the large city of Fukuoka, from which it is perfect for a day trip. There are a number of temples and shrines, the most famous of which is the Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, as well as sites related to Dazaifu's role as the region's administrative center, such as the Government Office Ruins. In 2005 the massive Kyushu National Museum was opened to the public, making a great new addition to the city's attractions.
++Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine++
Among the hundreds of Tenmangu Shrines throughout Japan, Dazaifu's (大宰府天満宮, Dazaifu Tenmangū) is the most important one alongside Kyoto's Kitano Tenmangu. Tenmangu Shrines are dedicated to the spirit of Sugawara Michizane, a scholar and politician of the Heian Period. Because of his great learning, Michizane has been associated with Tenjin, a Shinto deity of education, and is popular among students.
Michizane displayed his remarkable talents from a young age, and had already begun composing poetry by the age of eleven. His political career developed quickly, and he was able to gain much influence within the imperial court, which was then dominated by the Fujiwara clan. However, his rise to power resulted in rivalries between Michizane and the Fujiwara, which ultimately resulted in Michizane's exile from the capital city of Kyoto to the far-off government office of Dazaifu.
Michizane passed away in Dazaifu in 903, just a few years after being sent into exile. Shortly after his death the country was ravaged by natural disasters, and people came to believe that the calamities were caused by the wrathful spirit of Michizane, still angered by his unjust treatment. Offerings were made to the spirit of Michizane and the tradition of Tenmangu Shrines was begun. The Tenmangu Shrine in Dazaifu was built on the site of his grave.
Tenmangu Shrine is located about 250 meters from Dazaifu Station, and the entire length of the approach is lined with shops that cater to the shrine's visitors. The shrine is rather large, stretching about 250 meters from one end to the other. After passing through the torii gate at the entrance, visitors will come across a pond that was built in the shape of the Japanese character for heart. A path leads across two arched bridges and islands which represent the past, present and future.
After crossing the bridges, visitors approach a walled courtyard with the shrine's main hall (honden), whose current building dates back to 1591. The plum tree standing on the right of the main hall is the legendary tobiume (flying plum tree), which according to tradition flew from Kyoto to Dazaifu to accompany Michizane into exile. Michizane was fond of plum trees, and plum trees are typically found at Tenmangu Shrines. There are as many as 6000 of them on the grounds of Dazaifu Tenmangu, and are typically in bloom from late February to mid March.
A wide range of good luck charms can be purchased from the shops around the main hall. Most popular are education related charms which are supposed to help students pass exams. The shrine enjoys great popularity among students especially during the entrance exam season, when enormous amounts of ema charms can be seen hanging on the shrine grounds.
Between the pond and the main hall stands the Dazaifu Tenmangu Museum, which houses and displays many of the shrine's treasures. And behind the main hall is the small Kanko Historical Museum, which displays the main events in the life of Michizane in small dioramas. Although the signs are written in Japanese, an English pamphlet is available that has explanations for each scene.
For travelers inspired by Michizane's example of dedicated study, more extensive learning can be done at the nearby Kyushu National Museum. A direct path to the museum has been constructed at the southeastern end of the shrine grounds.

FUKUOKA (Japan) in One Day #2 (of 2): Kushida Shrine & Canal City Hakata
After a very long Pacific Ocean crossing from Brazil to Japan on the Ocean Dream cruise ship that Pullmantur was delivering to Peace Boat at the Hakata port, we finally have a few hours to enjoy the city of Fukuoka!
Unfortunately just a few hours is not enough but we still visited the Kushida Shrine, a very beautiful Buddhist temple, and the Canal City shopping centre, that has a nice fountain show, all after a quick city tour by car.
On the way back from Japan to Brazil, I also had the change to do a stopover in Hong-Kong, so please subscribe to watch the next ONE DAY IN... series, which will be in Hong-Kong!
More about Fukuoka:
Fukuoka (福岡市 Fukuoka-shi) is the capital city of Fukuoka Prefecture and is situated on the northern shore of the island of Kyushu in Japan.
Ranked as the 14th of the world's most livable cities in the magazine Monocle in 2010, Fukuoka was praised for its green spaces in a metropolitan setting. It is the most populous city in Kyushu, followed by Kitakyushu. It is the largest city and metropolitan area west of Keihanshin. The city was designated on April 1, 1972 by government ordinance. Greater Fukuoka (福岡都市圏), with 2.5 million people (2005 census), is part of the heavily industrialized Fukuoka-Kitakyushu zone, as well as Northern Kyushu.
As of June 2011, Fukuoka is Japan's 7th largest city, having passed the population of Kyoto, and the first time a city west of the Kinki region has a larger population since Kyoto was established in the 7th century. However, in ancient times, the area near Fukuoka was thought to be perhaps even more influential than the Yamato region.

Kyushu
Kyushu (九州, Kyūshū, lit. Nine Provinces) is the third largest island of Japan and most southwesterly of its four main islands. Its alternate ancient names include Kyūkoku (九国?, Nine States), Chinzei (鎮西?, West of the Pacified Area), and Tsukushi-no-shima (筑紫島?, Island of Tsukushi). The historical regional name Saikaidō (西海道, lit. West Sea Circuit) referred to Kyushu and its surrounding islands.
In the 8th century Taihō Code reforms, Dazaifu was established as a special administrative term for the region.

Fukoka, Japan April 11-12, 2009
Fukuoka (福岡市 ,Fukuoka-shi?) is the capital city of Fukuoka Prefecture and is situated on the northern shore of the island of Kyūshū in Japan, across the Korea Strait from South Korea's Busan.
It is the most populous city in Kyūshū, followed by Kitakyūshū. It is the largest city and metropolitan area west of Osaka. The city was designated on April 1, 1972 by government ordinance. Greater Fukuoka (福岡都市圏) with 2.5 million people (2005 Census), is part of the heavily industrialized North Kyūshū zone.
History
Fukuoka (the area of Kashii, Hakata, Sawara and Imazu) is said to be the oldest city in Japan, because it is the nearest city to China and Korea. The area around Fukuoka is among the oldest non-Jōmon settlements in Japan. Dazaifu was an administrative capital in 663 A.D., but some say[weasel words] a prehistoric capital was in the area. Ancient texts such as the Kojiki and archaeology confirm this was a very critical place in the founding of Japan. Some scholars[1] even go as far as to claim it was the first place outsiders and the Imperial Family set foot, but like many early Japan origin theories, it remains contested. See History of Japan. Fukuoka is sometimes still referred to as Hakata, the central ward of the city.

Kyushu Trip: Day 11
So, the trip around Kyushu is coming to it's end. True to it's namesake, Kyushu really embodies the Land of Fire, with its active volcano and endless mountains. The adventure throughout this Nine Provinces has taught me a lot; it is good to have an end journey towards, but it is the journey that matters in the end.
Today the venture focuses at Dazaifu, a city that was once the administrative center for Kyushu during late 7th centery for over 500 years.
The surrounding consists of Dazaifu Tenmangu, devoted to deity of learning and arts. A short walk away is Kyushu National Museum, with curated displays rivaled even Tokyo and Kyoto National Museum.
As once a seat of power, Kanzeonji was Kyushu most important temple, but still stores cultural artifacts from Nara and Heian period. Stood nearby also was once Government Office complex for over thousand years, that is now served as public park.

Kyoto is Japan's third largest city and also one of it's oldest. It was originally founded as Heian in 794, and had its golden age during the court's heyday from 794 to 1185. Home to many cultural landmarks and historical sites, Kyoto is thought of as the heart of Japan. The city still bears the name Kyoto, or Capital City, even though the emperor and the National Diet are located in Tokyo. For most of Japan's history, Heian was the center not only of government but of learning and the arts.
