With parts of China now currently dealing once again with massive flooding, one group of newly-confirmed Tzu Chi volunteers hailing from Sichuan province have been cut off from returning to their homes. In Chengdu since the 13th to complete their Tzu Chi conservation training, the roads that would take the group home have been cut off, leaving them stranded - but true to the organization's discipline, this has left them more determined than ever to set aside their own personal cravings, to work to forestall natural catastrophes.
---Gale-force winds and rains---
July's gale-force winds and downpours have left many communities in China reeling from torrential flooding.
After a rapacious scouring of the earth by winds and waters, mud and detritus are everywhere. It is sad proof of human imprudence before nature.
Studying and practicing as a team, these students are here to learn how to be better volunteers, to promote and extend Tzu Chi's recycling activities. It's their first time to use computers. All are from east Sichuan's mountain city, Dazhou(達州), and have been here since the 13th of this month. They traveled around six hours to take part in this training - but now, at this critical moment, they can't get back.
Dazhou volunteer, Li Zhizhen: The highways are all washed out. The bridges, too. We can only keep studying here. When we go back, we can promote conservation.

Fortunately, the volunteers have all gotten confirmation of their families' safety. Now, each is focusing on turning their personal love to the Great Love
Dazhou volunteer, Li Zhizhen: My household is actually safe, but the people of nearby Wanyuan County are really suffering. So we are still worrying some; without recycling, plastic will clog up the ditches, and won't that flood the plains? So we are waiting for more news, doing our recycling. When we get the word, we will return - and then, we'll need to care for our fellow Tzu Chi.
Today, the team is going to a factory in the city of Chengdu, where they will hold a recycling promotional.
---Letting no opportunity escape them---
As they go about their work, these new volunteers let no moment slip past them - because they know, if they don't act quickly, the disaster will only worsen. All of them see their current practice as preparation for the work that awaits them at home.
Dazhou volunteer, Yan Xuanlan: We have six counties; each one is staffed by Tzu Chi bodhisattvas. Back at each of our homes, we've all got friends and family - three, maybe five, who will promote recycling in this way. So as far as encouragement is concerned, all of us from Dazhou have the same intent.
---A lesson for us all---
As global climates become increasingly extreme, stories of families separated, and community strife, will become more common; Tzu Chi reminds us that re-building begins with the heart, and that every disaster is an opportunity to make our lives better than before.
