Things to do in Stellenbosch, South Africa Travel Guide Video Transcript:
On our very first trip to South Africa we spent one day in Stellenbosch where we did a wine tour and hit up a total of 5 wineries. It was an action packed day but we knew we had only seen a fraction of what this place has to offer and we were itching to return! Fast forward two years, and we found ourselves with an invitation to come and experience Stellenbosch, this time with a week to spare. Naturally we said yes! This being the winelands meant that our itinerary was wine heavy, but we also got to see sample the food, visit the markets, check out the nightlife and get close to nature. The following is our travel guide to Stellenbosch, pour yourself a glass of wine, sit back, and join us on this ride!
In between all the feasting and vineyard hopping, we also found a bit of time to explore Stellenbosch itself. Stellenbosch is a charming town located in the Western Cape, and it’s the second oldest European settlement in the province after Cape Town. The streets are lined with oak trees, the buildings are all painted white, and you have a cool mix of Early Cape, Cape Dutch, and Victorian architecture.
And while Sam was off hiking, I did a biking tour of Stellenbosch with the Adventure Shop, where I learned a bit more about the town’s history, and got out in nature, before biking over to the Lanzerac Wine Estate where we met up with the group again. Here we had a light lunch featuring a spread of cheese, deli meats, fresh fruits, and of course, wine!
And just like that our week in Stellenbosch was over! I think it’s fair to say that we left a few pounds heavier, but with a newfound appreciation for South African wine and a taste of what the winelands have to offer. As always, we hope you enjoyed this travel guide and that it gave you a few ideas of things to do in Stellenbosch. If you have any other suggestions of cool things to see, eat, or experience, feel free to share those with travellers in the comments below. In the meantime we wish you happy travels and we’ll see you in Cape Town on our next video!

Making Wine At The Oldest Winery In South Africa - Groot Constantia
Jeff Bradford visits Groot Constantia - The oldest Wine producing Estate in South Africa, creating award winning wines for 330 years. In this episode, you'll experience how wine is made in this part of the world. Subscribe to the adventure
About Groot Constantia:
If you haven’t heard about Groot Constantia, then it is my pleasure to introduce you to South Africa’s oldest winery. I would be doing a disservice if I didn’t give some of the history about this estate. In 1679 Simon van der Stel was appointed by the Dutch East India Company to govern the Cape of Good Hope. After years of loyal service, he requested land from the Company. He periodically sent out riders to collect soil samples and in 1685 he found a potential wine-growing area that had magnificent scenery situated behind Table Mountain. Over the years the wines produced on the estate caught the attention of influential people across the globe – clearly due to its impressive quality. Global aristocracy made sure that they had enough stock of this acclaimed and precious product.
The estate was named Constantia after the Latin word for constancy or steadfastness. These attributes he valued greatly and today the winemaker, Boela Gerber and staff follow in his footsteps to uphold his enduring legacy of perfection at Groot Constantia.

Glenwood Vineyard in Franschhoek with DP Burger | Wine Tours South Africa
*Come on a Wine & Food Tour with BKWine* --- An introduction to Glenwood Vineyards by DP Burger. DP talks about the very particular climate in the Robersvlei valley. the many different soil types they have, about the vineyards and the grape varieties, and also on how old the vines can become and diseases in the vineyard.
Is climate, soil or winemaker the most important? Well, winemaking is 99% terroir, says DP. There are limits to what you can do in the cellar. If you don’t have good fruit, you can’t make good wine.. You can’t really separate climate from terroir. Climate is important. You can have perfect soil but if you don’t have the right climate it won’t work.
And a bit of history on South African wine making. After apartheid finished there was huge demand for red wines so everyone started to plant cabernet and syrah. Not always on the right soils
Glenwood Vineyards is a winery in the Franschhoek district. The winemaker and boss is DP Burger. It is a relatively small vineyard focused on making high quality wines. They work mainly with sauvignon blanc, semillon, and chardonnay for the whites and merlot and syrah for the red wines. It is located in a separate valley away from the main Franschhoek valley, in the Robertsvlei Valley, a stunningly beautiful and quite secluded place. Its first wines were launched in 2000 although the first vines were planted much earlier.
One of many great experiences you can have on a wine and food tour to in South Africa with BKWine Tours, the specialist in wine travel and gourmet travel. We make sure you get a once-in-a-lifetime unique experience when visiting wine country regions, wineries, vineyards, and chateaux, and when meeting winemakers.

Breakfast in South Africa at Company's Garden Restaurant in Cape Town travel food video transcript:
Well good morning from Cape Town. We are up bright and early for breakfast and we decided let's go out for breakfast today instead of eating at the AirBNB. We're staying right across from The Company's Garden and we were walking through the other day and we saw that they have a nice little coffee shop slash restaurant slash teahouse. They open at six in the morning so we figured let's eat there today.
Well, first things first. Tea because it is freezing cold outside. It is mid-autumn. Mid autumn I think right?
Yeah, anyways it so chilly in the morning. Technically it is late May here but this would be their late Autumn maybe early starting into winter.
I can see my breath in the air this morning. Well, the thing is the temperature by like say late morning or mid-afternoon is hot.
Like it is in the mid 20s. Oh. But in the morning it is cold. In the morning tea is good.
Oh, and I'm having Rooibos. Look at that. A beautiful cup of red tea. That really is beautiful. And you know what?
I just drink my tea plain. They've brought me a lovely tray with milk and I don't need it.
And I have to say Rooibos is on my Dad's favorite teas. Mmmhmm.
I think he discovered it maybe like maybe 5 to 10 years ago. Something like that and we always have Rooibos tea. Always. Now in the house. Always. Whenever I go home it is like one of the teas that is available.
And look. A little cookie. This looks like the rusks. The hard bread that they sell here. Mmm.
It is kind of like a biscotti. I think that is the closest thing I can compare it to. But yeah, this is really nice. So I'm just going to dip it in my tea. Because that is how we roll here.
Actually it is a cappuccino art. I got a cappuccino. Cappuccino.
No Koeksisters today.
That is a traditional pastry slash dessert type. Yeah, but we just asked for another recommendation and we're getting a Milk Tart.
This is the full English or the complete breakfast or whatever you want to call it here.
Well, give us the tour then. This thing is massive. Like this plate. Look at this. It is more like a platter.
It is a platter. It is a double hand platter. Double hand platter. Oh man.
So over here we've got what appears to be some fried mushrooms. I love mushrooms We have a hashbrown. We have a grilled tomato, we have toast. We have bacon and that will please any Canadian guy.
And over here we have like a thin. A long thin sausage and then we have two eggs well done. because nothing grosses me out more than runny eggs.
Okay, so for my breakfast I ordered eggs benedict with salmon.
But because I'm sharing with Sam I would normally order my eggs runny but he was like no please. We compromised. We compromised with medium.
I get to try Sam's breakfast. Yeah, and something I you know would be cool to find out is if you lived or stayed in South Africa for a while, or you're from here, what is something you would typically have for breakfast?
Because you know we're this is what we're eating today but it would be great to find out what are some other different types of foods.
Alright, so it is that time again. Time for price point. So that was 305 Rand which was $22 US dollars and that included 3 drinks, 2 massive mains, a dessert. So full, satisfied and now we're going to go relax and play some chess.
