Sossusvlei & Deadvlei, Namibia
Sossusvlei was one of those destinations that completely lived up to the image I had in my mind. Sossusvlei, and its iconic neighbour Deadvlei, were every bit as sensational and surreal as I had hoped.

Driving the 4x4 sand road to Deadvlei/Sossusvlei in Namibia (all 4km)
The dead camel thorn trees at the white clay pan Deadvlei surrounded by high sand dunes is one of the greatest sights in Namibia. Deadvlei, and the nearby salt pan Sossusvlei, are located in the Namib-Naukluft Park. To reach Deadvlei, you drive a 60km sealed road from Sesriem until you reach a car park. That's as far you can get with a 4x2 car, but to continue further on to the Deadvlei parking, you need a 4x4 vehicle. The tar road ends at the 4x2 parking and from there you will have to drive 4km on a sand road. This video covers the full 4km of sand driving between the two parkings.

Namibia roadtrip day 10: road to Sossusvlei watch the sunrise over the sand dunes and visit dune 45
Travel with Simon on my Namibia road trip as we head out into the sand dunes at Sossuvlei to see the biggest dunes on earth. See how not to avoid getting stuck in the sand! On the way back to camp at Sesriem we will stop for breakfast at Dune 45.
On day 10 of our Namibia roadtrip we are heading out into the sand dunes at Sossusvlei in the Namib Desert to watch the sunrise.
The Sossusvlei road from the the campsite at Sesriem is through thick sand, if you don't want to get stuck then park your car at the 2x4 car park and take the shuttle. It's cheap and runs about every 15 minutes in open safari vehicles with super flat tyres.
There are a number of dunes you can visit on the way back including Dune 45 (Big Daddy) which is possibly the most photographed individual dune and great for sunset (for viewing the sunset itself rather than the sun setting over the dunes). Another famous dune worth a visit is Dune 5 or Elim Dune.
Sossusvlei forms part of the Namib Naukluft park, but don't get confused, the Namib Naukluft is a very large park and to see the red sand dunes at Sossusvlei or to see Deadvlei you must enter through the park gate at Sesriem. The camp ground known as Namib Naukluft is some 100km away in a different section of the park entirely.

Namibia: DeadVlei, Sossusvlei & Walvis Bay
Get to know Namibia's Desert!
When I started researching about Namibia and realized that this is the country that hosts this stunning place called DeadVlei located in the Sossusvlei region, I got really obsessed about going there.
I had only 4 free days in my Africa’s itinerary which I could fit Namibia’s desert into it, and with the help of Chameleon Safaris I managed to make it happen as they have many tour options including a 3 day express tour to Sossusvlei, which is the one I took and I am telling you all about it in my blog post on
Itinerary:
DAY 1 – From Swakopmund to Sesriem (Desert Camp)
The tour leaves from A La Mer Hotel in Swakopmund, a city with German colonial architecture located on the coast of Namibia. The closest airport is 40 minutes away in Walvis Bay (WVB Airport) and you need to get there on the day before the tour begins.
You will spend pretty much the whole day in the bus, stopping only for a few minutes at some cool places for pictures such as the Tropic of Capricorn Sign, Soltaire (a small desert town with gas station, bakery, shop…) and other places on the way where you can see aloe trees.
DAY 2 – Sossusvlei
Besides DeadVlei, you will also see many great views of the desert dunes, including the famous Dune 45 which you can climb it up or just walk around.
The tour returns to the camp and later you will take a 15 minutes bus ride to visit Sesriem Canyon.
DAY 3 – Windhoek
The bus heads to Soltaire in the morning. From there you will go to the N/a’an ku sê Wildlife Sanctuary to see the rescued cheetahs and then to Windhoek, which is the capital of Namibia and is where the tour ends.

Namibia /Africa
Sossusvlei is a salt and clay pan surrounded by high red dunes, located in the southern part of the Namib Desert, in the Namib-Naukluft National Park of Namibia. The name Sossusvlei is often used in an extended meaning to refer to the surrounding area (including other neighbouring vleis such as Dead Vlei and other high dunes), which is one of the major visitor attractions of Namibia.
The name Sossusvlei is of mixed origin, and roughly means dead end marsh. Vlei is the afrikaans word for marsh, while sossus is nama for no return or dead end. Sossusvlei owes this name to the fact that it is an endorheic drainage basin (i.e., a drainage basin without outflows) for the ephemeral Tsauchab River.
The Sossusvlei area belongs to a wider region of southern Namib with homogeneous features (about 32.000 km²) extending between rivers Koichab and Kuiseb. This area is characterized by high sand dunes of vivid pink-to-orange color, a consequence of a high percentage of iron in the sand and consequent oxidation processes. The oldest dunes are those of a more intense reddish color. These dunes are among the highest in the world; many of them are above 200 metres, the highest being the one nicknamed Big Daddy, about 380 metres high.
Traces in the sand, left by insects and other small animalsThe highest and more stable dunes are partially covered with a relatively rich vegetation, which is mainly watered by a number of underground and ephemeral rivers that seasonally flood the pans, creating marshes that are locally known as vlei; when dry, these pans look almost white in color, due to the high concentration of salt. Another relevant source of water for Sossusvlei is the humidity brought by the daily morning fogs that enter the desert from the Atlantic Ocean.
Fauna in the Sossusvlei area is relatively rich. It mostly comprises small animals that can survive with little water, including a number of arthropods, small reptiles and small mammalians such as rodents or jackals); bigger animals include antelopes (mainly oryxes and springboks) and ostrichs. During the flood season, several migrant bird species appear along the marshes and rivers. Much of the Sossusvlei and Namib fauna is endemic and highly adapted to the specific features of the Namib. Most notably, fog beetles such as the Namib Desert Beetle have developed a technique for collecting water from early morning fogs through the bumps in their back.
Dune 45 is so called because it lies 45 km past Sesriem on the road to Sossusvlei. It is also known as the most photographed dune in the world; because of its unusually simple and fascinating shape, and its proximity to the road, that make it convenient for visitors to stop by and take pictures. It is 80 meters high and it is not very steep, so that it can easily be climbed.
Deadvlei is another clay pan, about 2 km from Sossusvlei. A notable feature of Deadvlei is that it used to be an oasis with several acacia trees; afterwards, the river that watered the oasis changed its course. The pan is thus punctuated by blackened, dead acacia trees, in vivid contrast to the shiny white of the salty floor of the pan and the intense orange of the dunes. This creates a particularly fascinating and surrealistic landscape, that appears in uncountable pictures and that has been used as a setting for films and videos.Wikipedia

Deadvlei Photography Tips | Namibia
Over the last 10 years of landscape photography I have been lucky enough to visit some of the most iconic photography locations in the world. In this new series of short videos I look back at some standout locations and provide my insights, experiences and photos. The first video in this series focuses on Deadvlei in the Namib desert of Namibia which has become one of the most famous landscape photography locations in the world. If you’re planning to visit Deadvlei, I hope these tips are useful, if you’re not visiting, I hope it’s interesting enough to keep you watching :-)
Let me know what you think of the format – does it work? Does the lack of video footage from the location make it less interesting? Interested to hear peoples thoughts.

Namibia - Sossusvlei & Deadvlei
Sossusvlei is a salt and clay pan surrounded by some of the highest sand dunes in the world. Deadvlei was formed when the Tsauchab river flooded, but when the climate changed the river was blocked and the trees died. They do not decompose because it is so dry.

✅ Sicherheit auf Reisen:
* Die Unterkunft in Sesriem:
Unserer Meinung nach sollte hier jeder Namibia-Reisende her kommen!
#LifetogoCommunity
