is one of the most impressive of the Device Forts or Henrician Castles built by Henry VIII between 1539 and 1540 as an artillery fortress to counter the threat of invasion, brought about by the alliance between Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor and King Francis I of France in 1538. Deal Castle and its smaller neighbours, Walmer and Sandown, were intended to dominate the Downs, a sheltered area of water in the English Channel protected by the Goodwin Sands, which would have been an ideal rallying point for any invasion fleet. The three forts were initially linked by an two mile long earthen fosse or rampart, strengthened by three small earth bulwarks or forts. These earthworks were sketched by the antiquarian William Stukeley in 1725, but now no trace of them remains.

Our visit to Deal Castle in Kent, England while on holiday in the Dover area of Kent. The castle was built by Henry VIII in 1540 as part of England’s sea defence against invasion from France. Walmer Castle (also open to the public) just over a mile along the coast from Deal castle, was built at the same time, and is identical in design to Deal Castle.

A quick run around our little Tudor castle in Deal to test the Freytech gimbal. Considering it was a bit windy there are a few jitters but overall it coped quite well ! DJI phantom 2 with go pro silver cam.

Royal Marines Beating Retreat at Deal Castle - 25 years on
HM Royal Marines (Collingwood Band) beating a retreat on the promenade at Deal Castle to remember the eleven Royal Marines Band musicians killed in the IRA bomb on the morning of September 22, 1989. 25 years on, the shock wave of that mornings events is still a painful memory for the close-knit community of Deal.
The Royal Marine band return to Deal every July to hold a commemorative concert to remember the eleven bandsmen.
