Business Spotlight - Sugar Loaf Orchards
This episode of the Alexander County Business Spotlight features Sugarloaf Orchards, located at 7415 NC Hwy. 16 North, near the Alexander/Wilkes county line.
The business owners are brothers Bobby and Bryant Lowe, who continued the family business following their parents and grandparents who began operations in the early 1900s.
Sugar Loaf Orchards consists of approximately 50 acres on which the family grows a wide variety of apples including Pink Lady, Golden Delicious, Red Delicious, Stayman Winesap, Ginger Gold, Gala, Limbertwig, and more.
The apple house has a country store where customers can purchase apples (of course), peaches, tomatoes, onions, squash, and other fruits and vegetables on a seasonal basis. The store also offers old-timey candy, jams and jellies, flavorings, country ham, Linney's Mill Corn Meal, and much more.
Sugar Loaf Orchards also sells its produce at the North Carolina State Farmers Market in Raleigh throughout the growing season.
The local business primarily employs family members; however, additional staff is hired for peak picking time. Lowe said running the orchard is a year-round process, with spraying, mowing, picking, pruning, and fertilizing to be done.
Sugar Loaf Orchards is open seven days a week from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. For more information, call (828) 635-7477.

Business Spotlight - Brushy Mountain Golf Club
This episode of the “Alexander County Business Spotlight” features Brushy Mountain Golf Club and its new restaurant, McLindon’s. The course, which opened in 1964, is owned by Baxter Hayes. He purchased the popular golf course in October 2013, and recently finished a new clubhouse and restaurant, as well as upgrades to the course itself. Construction of a 10-room lodge is currently under way. The clubhouse is approximately 12,000 square feet, including a 2,160 square foot deck and 3,300 square foot event/dining area, with a bar area complete with big-screen TVs. Hayes said the new facilities are keeping locals here, and attracting visitors as well. “We’re just going to try to do some stuff for Alexander County that we’ve always had to go across the river or county line to do,” Hayes stated. If you take your money to another county, it stays there. Not only are the social activities attracting people, but the course membership has also increased from 244 members to 420 members in just a year. Brushy Mountain Golf Club and McLindon's are open to the general public. Members enjoy a 10 percent discount on food and merchandise. If you're not a golfer, social memberships are available for those who frequent the club. For more information, visit BrushyMountainGolf.com or call (828) 632-4804.
