A video showing my recent visit to the Dean Forest Railway, featuring Hunslet Austerity no. 3880/WD152 'Rennes' plus a DMU.
A very charming railway set in the Forest of Dean. Starting at Lydney Junction where there is a connection to the national rail network, the line runs through the town of Lydney and the forest alongside the River Lyd. On route the line passes Lydney Town, Norchard (The DFR's headquarters), Whitecroft and currently terminates at Parkend.
The line is heavily used by walker heading to and from the forest, avoiding the need to take the car into the forest.
Ran by friendly staff who are easy to talk to, I can fully recommend a visit to the line.

Dean Forest Railway:
The Dean Forest Railway meanders for nearly 5 miles from Lydney Junction Station (adjacent to Lydney Station of Network Rail, UK) Northwards through the town of Lydney (with stations at St Mary's Halt, Lydney Town) then onwards to the Steam Centre at Norchard, just North of Lydney beside the B4234 road. Here the railway enters the Forest Of Dean and goes onward to the present terminus at Parkend. Hopefully, more track may be re-laid to take it further Northwards into some of the best parts of the forest.

UK: On board a freight train hauled by a Class 31 loco at the Dean Forest Railway
UK: A journey on board the 0945 Lydney Junction to Parkend freight train hauled by a Class 31 loco (number 31466) at the Dean Forest Railway, Gloucestershire.
As part of the 2017 Diesel Gala at the Dean Forest Railway (15th, 16th & 17th September 2017) a number of 'rideable' freight trains were operated in addition to the usual trains formed of normal passenger coaches. Passengers were able to ride in the Guard's van for the payment of an additional £3 supplement. Recorded 17th September 2017.

The Dean Forest Railway is a 4 1⁄4-mile (6.8 km) long heritage railway that runs between Lydney and Parkend in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire.
The route was part of the former Severn and Wye Railway which ran from Lydney to Cinderford. The society that operates the line started steam locomotive operations in 1971, and bought the trackbed and line from British Rail in 1986. Reaching Both Lydney Junction and Parkend railway stations by 1995 and 2005 respectively. Trains are operated by both steam and heritage diesel locomotives, and heritage diesel multiple units.
The Dean Forest Railway has been given the former GWR signal box that stood slightly to the east of Codsall station in Staffordshire. Its removal was completed in July 2007, and was placed at the newly restored Whitecroft railway station.
The Dean Forest Railway has also been given the former Griffithstown Station building. Its removal was completed in June 2016, and is expected to be placed at the new upcoming Speech House Road.
CrossCountry are now providing a combined fare for travel to Lydney mainline station (on CrossCountry services only) and then onto the Dean Forest Railway.
The Dean Forest Railway plans to extend its heritage services a further 2 1⁄2 miles (4.0 km) through/into the middle of the Royal Forest at Speech House Road (close to the nearby Beechenhurst Visitor Attraction), bringing the line to a total of about 6 3⁄4 miles (10.9 km) in length.[4] In 2016, DFR’s director of civil engineering and director of development Jason Shirley announced plans to expand the railway to Cinderford. The project's status as a strategic regional development means that a large proportion of the estimated £8million cost could be met by Government funding.

Lydney is a small town and civil parish in the English county of Gloucestershire. It is on the west bank of the River Severn, close to the Forest of Dean. The town lies on the A48, next to the Lydney Park gardens with its Roman temple in honour of Nodens. A bypass has recently been completed for through traffic. The population was about 8,960 in the 2001 census, reducing to 8,766 at the 2011 census.

Brake van and guard's van are terms used mainly in the UK, Australia and India for a railway vehicle equipped with a hand brake which can be applied by the guard. The equivalent North American term is caboose, but a British brake van and a caboose are very different in appearance, because the former usually has only four wheels, while the latter usually has bogies.
Many British freight trains formerly had no continuous brake so the only available brakes were those on the locomotive and the brake van. Because of this shortage of brake power, the speed was restricted to 25 mph (40 km/h). The brake van was marshalled at the rear of the train so both portions of the train could be brought to a stand in the event of a coupling breaking.
When freight trains were fitted with continuous braking, brake vans lost their importance, and were discontinued by many railways. However, they still continue on some important railways, such as the Indian Railways, besides the heritage railways.

Dean Forest Railway 1989
A visit to the Norchard base of the Dean Forest Railway during Easter Week 1989 saw GWR 0-6-0PT 9681 in service with Hunslet 0-6-0ST 'Wilbert' in light steam in the yard. A trip was taken to the then limit of the line short of Lydney LC.

The Dean Forest Railway on Sunday 17th May 2009
This is a new Railway for me and what a nice little Railway it is, it makes a change from the Great Central!
This is the 12.50 departure from Parkend hauled by the resident ex.GWR Pannier Tank No.9681. The day we went it was the Royal Forester First Class Dining Train so it was fairly busy. I have tried to capture some on the train shots as well as some lineside shots at the two terminals of the line. Unfortunately, it poured it down with rain virtually all the time we were there (although the return journey wasn't so bad as the rain was coming behind me out of the window) so alot of the film was wasted.
All in all a great trip and I enjoyed it thoroughly. I would like to go for one of their Galas but a bit far away for me!
Dean Forest Railway - 02/03/14 - 2014 Season First Day
On Sunday, 2nd March the Dean Forest Railway ran it's first service of the 2014 season. To mark the day two trains were in action; 108 DMU & newly re-operational 3806 'Wilbert'. It was also free entry with people paying what they thought the day was worth by donations. It was a great day, even with typically British weather.
I would like to thank all of the volunteers for being friendly and helpful at all times as they always are at the DFR!

Dean Forest Railway - A Diesel Day
A round trip on the Dean Forest Railway behind diesel locos D9555 and D9521. These were the last standard gauge locomotives to be built at Swindon works. They also worked the Dean Forest branch lines back in the 60s.

'Run round at Lydney' - GWR No. 5541 on the Dean Forest Railway
This summer the Dean Forest Railway has been dependent on the services of its GWR Small Prairie no 5541 which is resplendent in fully lined out BR Brunswick Green livery as was applied to as many locomotives as possible after 1956 by BR Western Region. Here it's seen at Lydney Junction running round its train on a beautifully sunny but very windy day typical of summer 2017. It's livery is seen to perfection as it runs over the road crossing at the west end of the station.

Dean Forest Railway - Great Western Gala Weekend - 01/07/12
A visit to the Dean Forest Railway for their Great Western Gala Weekend held on Saturday 30th June and Sunday 1st July. The event would feature three locomotives in steam, all of Great Western origin, operating passenger services, goods trains, auto-trains and double heading.
Locomotives running during the event:
- GWR 4575 Class 2-6-2T no.5521
- GWR 8750 Class 0-6-0PT no.9681
- GWR 1400 Class 0-4-2T no.1450 (Repainted in BR Unlined Black and running as 1401 of Titfield Thunderbold fame)
Shots include:
- 1450 departs Lyndey Jcn with the 11:20 auto train for Norchard Low Level.
- 9681 passes through Lydney Town with the 11:25 goods for Lydney West Loop.
- 1450 returns passing through Lydney Town Station with the 11:55 auto train for Lydney Jnc.
- 1450 charges out of Norchard High Level with the 12:20 auto train for Parkend.
- 5521 & 9681 storm out of Norchard High Level with the 12:38 for Parkend.
- 1450 sweeps through returning with the 13:10 auto train for Norchard Low Level.
- 9681 & 5521 return with the 13:25 for Lydney Jnc.
- 1450 rests at Norchard Low Level then departs with the 13:57 auto train for Lydney Jcn.
- 5521 arrives at Norchard High Level then storms out with the 14:10 for Parkend.
- 9681 passes through Norchard High Level with the 14:22 goods for Parkend.
- 5521 arrives at and departs from the recently restored Whitecroft Station on the 14:52 for Lydney Jcn.
- 1450 departs Whitecroft on the 15:24 auto train for Parkend.
- 5521 speeds by running into Parkend with the 15:40 from Lydney Jnc (At this point all engines and their trains were at Parkend).
- 1450 seen just outside Parkend with the 16:11 auto train for Lydney Jnc.
- 9681 departs Parkend with the 16:26 goods for Norchard Low Level.
- 5521 departs Parkend with the last service of the day, the 16:41 for Norchard High Level.

Dean Forest Railway
A nice preserved standard gauge railway running through the forest of Dean in Gloucestershire near the Welsh border. Uses both steam and Diesel and has a very friendly and helpful set of volunteers.
British Railways Prairie Tank 5541 - Dean Forest Railway
After a hard working day at the Dean Forest Railway's Easter Event, the Prairie Tank 5541 moves out of Norchard station to be shunted away for the day.

The 4 1/2 mile line was part of the Severn and Wye Valley Railway, originally in 1813 a track-way to Lydney Harbour with its huge lock gates as the Severn has a tidal range of 48 ft. It was for the transport from the forest of coal, stone, iron ore and, most importantly, timber for the Navy. When converted to a broad gauge line in 1868 it also connected to the GWR main line to Cardiff at Lydney Junction, now the Southern end of the line. The Northern end is at Parkend, with plans to extend a further 2 1/2 miles.
As it was the original point of the line, I open with a shot of Lydney Harbour (the last coal was shipped in 1960), before going to Norchard, the base for the line, first to head North to Parkend, and then back through Norchard to Lydney Junction.
At Whitecroft, the intermediate station, is the GWR signal box from Codsall in Staffordshire, yet to be restored.
Many of the curves are very tight and you will hear the wheels whining a protest.
Our loco 5541 spent her working life at Swindon, Bristol, Machynlleth and Laira, covering almost 1,000,000 miles, a good distance for a small Prairie tank.
If necessary, adjust to 1080HD.

It may be wet, but it’s perfect for a visit to a steam railway. Continuing our holiday, sees us heading towards Wales and so, on the way is the DFR. First class all the way today in the saloon. Great views all round despite the rain
