Chai Lai Orchid Fundraises to Save DeeDee the Elephant
Across the river from The Chai Lai Orchid (chailaiorchid.com), 11 elephants live and work. Four of those elephants, including DeeDee, are babies. While they are too small for chair rides now, they will soon grow up and join their friends in their backbreaking toil. It doesn’t have to be this way though. With your help, we can change the tide of tourism in Thailand.
Lao Tzu says, “The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.”
It has always been our dream to rescue DeeDee and her friends. While we have struggled to watch the elephants we love be overworked and paraded around wearing chairs , we knew that by continuing to bathe them, love them and buy them time off, we could set an example of humane treatment for elephants.
With your help, we have the opportunity to changes the lives of these elephants forever. Get involved at chailaiorchid.com/
BEST ELEPHANT SANCTUARY IN CHIANG MAI | Thailand Travel Vlog | Travel & Give Back
The more I travel, the more apparent it has become that the lives and welfare of animals are often overlooked for the sake of tourism. I'm definitely not exempt from the lack of attention and urgency to this important issue. However, more so, I truly believe that we have an ethical and moral obligation to protect the animals of this big, beautiful, blue planet.
This first episode of my Thailand series is about a very special elephant sanctuary in Chiang Mai called Chai Lai Orchid. A dozen elephants live side-by-side with guests on Chai Lai property, while promoting humane tourism and conscientious interactions with these majestic creatures. Chai Lai also partners with the non-profit, Daughter's Rising, which helps victims of human and sex trafficking to take back the power lost by providing them a refuge, safety and job training. These topics are never easy to discuss, especially when you just want to relax and be stress-free while on vacation. However, I'm a firm believer that anytime I visit another country, it is an opportunity to learn, to be humbled and to grow. Although, we may look different and speak different languages, it is that sense of compassion and empathy for others and all things that connects us after all.

Ethical Elephant Tourism - Chai Lai Orchid
Is elephant tourism ethical? Well in my opinion it really depends on how they treat the elephants. Are there saddles? Hooks? Chains? If so then I'd take a pass on supporting it. Visiting an elephant camp / sanctuary in Chang Mai is definitely a must.
Chai Lai Orchid is an excellent and trustworthy organization, that treats these magical creatures with respect and love. There is a ton of work that goes into this organization and they deserve the shout out.

Elephant jungle sanctuary - part II, Elephant bath in chiang mai | Thailand |
Playing, feeding, bathing, and interacting with rescued elephants was by far one of our favorite things to do in Thailand. To help with the elephant’s digestion, the sanctuary give the elephants a medicine/vitamin ball every day – we made these! These balls contain tamarind, but as elephants have a HUGE sweet tooth, they mix it together with bananas. Fun fact, did you know that elephants eat about 150+kg of food per day?? The whole time we were with the elephants they were munching away on something haha!It was much more fun playing in the water with baby elephant than watching on the sidelines. don’t forget to give them some love and say “DeeDee”.
The elephants are MASSIVE in real life, something the camera cannot even capture! It was a humbling experience to be with these beautiful, intelligent, and happy elephants. I encourage you to try it out at least once in your life! :) better alternative to riding elephants in Thailand.
Thumbs up this video for the smiley elephants!

Day Trip to Chai Lai Orchid/ Phutawan Elephant Camp
Went up to an elephant camp shared with a place known as The Chai Lai Orchid. We learned a lot about the elephants of Thailand, and the desperate push to minimize the effects of tourism on these beautiful creatures. A trip down the river on a bamboo raft was also a fun treat. Enjoy!

Visiting The Chai Lai Orchid, March 2014
Loved my stay at the Chai Lai Orchid. I stayed there for four days, but I feel in love in the first four seconds. The eco travel resort is not only full of elephant rides, baths and care, but they help support with at-risk women and local tribes - including teaching English to the local Kaya children.
