BC Winegrowers - Nk'Mip Cellars - Osoyoos
Winemakers Randy Picton and Justin Hall along with legendary grape grower Sam Baptiste (Inkameep Vineyards) take you on a tour of Nk’Mip’s two main vineyard sites. We talk about ripening Cabernet Sauvignon and picking fruit at different times to balance flavours and winemaker Randy Picton reminds us of how little winemaking is done at Nk'Mip to respect the true characteristics of the vineyard. As North American’s first Aboriginal owned and operated winery, Nk’Mip wines represent native qualities of strength, pride and the deep historical roots of the Osoyoos Nation.

Webinar 5: NonDestructive Sensing in Vineyards
This webinar will discuss our work on the Efficient Vineyard project toward measuring various viticultural parameters in the field using cameras and artificial intelligence. We will describe the hardware used to collect images in the field, which consists of a high-resolution stereo pair with synchronized high-intensity flash lighting. We will also describe the software pipeline that extracts measurements from the camera images, and combines classical computer vision techniques with more modern deep neural networks. We will describe results of using this approach to measure parameters in the field such as yield, shoot count, and pruning weight. Finally, we will discuss some of the challenges and opportunities we see for this line of work going forward. George Kantor of Carnegie Mellon will be a guest speaker.
Webinar 8 Spatial Data Used in Practical Application
From simple maps generated from one data layer for vineyard scouting to fully-integrated spatial-data-driven variable-rate mechanized applications, the usefulness of spatial information is starting to take hold in our vineyard operations. Terry Bates, Kevin Martin, and Tim Weigle discuss how spatial data are being used for practical vineyard applications. Previous webinars have covered many of the sensor tools and data processing techniques used to collect spatial vineyard data and visualize relationships between data layers. In this webinar, we start talking about how spatial data are used to make vineyard management decisions in our research blocks as well as taking a test drive in some commercial plots.
Over Wintering Strategies: New vineyard management practices
Canadian winters can be tough on wine grape vines. A single extreme cold snap can damage vines and reduce crop yields significantly. Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada researchers in Summerland, British Columbia, are collecting data from multiple sources to determine the best practices for protecting vineyards against extreme cold.
It’s more than cool research. View this video to learn more.

Full Video Transcript:
Narrator: Canadian winters can be tough on wine grape vines. A single extreme cold snap can damage vines and reduce crop yields by 20 to 30%. When temperatures drop below -20 for an extended period, the whole crop is at risk. And it takes two years for a vine to recover, amounting to a significant financial loss for growers and vintners. Carl Bogdanoff and his team at the Pacific Agri-Food Research Centre, in Summerland, British Columbia are working with grape growers to better protect vines against the deep freeze.
Carl Bogdanoff: In the past, say about 30 years ago, the wine industry was fairly small and also was based on winter hardy hybrid varieties which produced fairly medium quality wines. The wine industry here in British Columbia decided to focus primarily on quality and to do that they replanted all their vineyards with premium vitus vinifera varieties such as merlot, cab franc chardonnay. All those wine varieties that we know and love. Vitus vinifera can tolerate some freezing but they are seriously tested when temperatures become record low temperatures. And when we do get these really freezing temperatures, grape buds are killed, vine tissue is damaged, the flowum or zylum or even the roots are damaged, or the vine could be totally killed outright.
Narrator: It is a multi-disciplined initiative that is fully engaged with the industry. The team monitors temperatures and bud hardiness at many locations across the Okanagan and Similkameen valleys. Participating growers receive a bi-weekly, bud hardiness report for major wine grape varieties. They use this information to assess risk of winter injury before and during an arctic event to help them decide when to operate fans that draw warmer air into vineyards. Knowing bud damage levels also helps in deciding how much to prune. Carl Bogdanoff: Last winter, this vine was compromised. It's flowum and zylum cells were damaged. It wasn't completely girdled, so this vine broke bud, sent up some shoots and had some crops but when it got really hot this summer this vine totally collapsed and now is dead.
Narrator: Additionally, the research team collects data in several other current research projects that are looking at the effects on hardiness of rootstocks and varietal selections irrigation practices use of fans to mix air in the vineyards amount of crop on the vines ground cover between vine rows disease leaf removal and cluster positioning and how a plant hormone, one that improves grape colour, is also contributing to bud hardiness.
Mike Watson: Anything we can do to make the vines hardier, even by 2 or 3 degrees, is huge. It's the difference between up to 50% damage and replanting crop loss to having a total successful year in the succeeding year.
Carl Bogdanoff: It is really important that we understand how we can help these vines weather these cold snaps that occur periodically and to develop new vineyard management practices that can improve the cold hardiness of the grape vine.
Narrator: Each summer, the team’s interim results are presented at the BC Wine Grape Council’s For Canadian vintners, smart science ensures you can enjoy Canadian wines room temperature or chilled.
Tax Reform for towns across British Columbia - Ray Zervini
I interviewed Raymond Zervini of Canyon Cable a business owner in Hope, British Columbia, and he has with others created a fervour in the district concerning the continued tax hikes that are higher than some cities in the Fraser Valley that number in the hundreds of thousands as opposed to the District of Hope whose population is less than 10,000. Ray has taken proactive and logical steps to organize a strong movement that has petitioned the community with over 1600 signatures which is approximately 50 percent of the homeowners in the area. This tax revolt has had open events letting the community become aware of the problem, and with the tax freeze proposal he is gaining the support of many voters in the Hope Area. The video interview with Ray spells out a template that encourages other townships in British Columbia to use. Here are some of the main points that are spelled out in the interview.
Joshua JD Lemmens
• Create a grass roots movement
• Organizing with community groups and individuals
• Holding open events to make people aware of the problem
• Create a clear petition with reasonable demands that tax payers understand
• Garner support and interest through organized events
• Taking responsibility in how your town runs
• Educate the public and create awareness
• Exchange of information in a variety of venues
• Involve established community groups like the chamber of commerce, the ratepayers association etc.
• Getting vocal at every opportunity
• Have a plan that is workable
• Input to all levels of local government
• Community involvement to save your town money
• Public forums
• Meet with public officials
• Making elected officials accountable
