Rainy day on a cemetery in Tallinn and a controversial bronze figure
The Defence Forces Cemetery of Tallinn, sometimes called the Tallinn Military Cemetery, is one of the three cemeteries of the Tallinn City Centre Cemetery. It is situated about 3 kilometers outside the center of Tallinn
The Bronze Soldier is the informal name of a controversial Soviet World War II war memorial in Tallinn, Estonia, built at the site of several war graves, which were relocated to the nearby Tallinn Military Cemetery in 2007

Estonia on Tuesday reburied the remains of eight Soviet soldiers which had been exhumed from a war grave in a move that sparked riots and infuriated neighbouring Russia.
The eight white caskets were lowered into the ground at the Defence Forces cemetery in a ceremony attended by Defence Minister Jaak Aaviksoo, foreign diplomats and World War II veterans.
Russian Ambassador to Estonia, Nikolai Uspensky declined an invitation to take part in the ceremony.
The Russian Embassy said he would attend a separate ceremony at the cemetery later on Tuesday along with Russian war veterans.
Already tense relations between Russia and Estonia plummeted to a new low after the Estonian government removed the war grave and an adjacent Soviet monument from downtown Tallinn in April.
Moscow condemned the move, and members of the Baltic country's Russian-speaking minority staged protests that degenerated into street riots that left one dead and over a hundred injured.
For Russians, the so-called Bronze Soldier monument and the war grave signified the enormous human sacrifice the Soviet Union made in defeating Nazi Germany.
Ethnic Estonians, however, regard the monument as a symbol of five decades of Soviet occupation and totalitarian rule that ended with Estonian independence in 1991.
The Russian side has made statements on the highest level about the unacceptable dismantling of the monument, conducting excavations and attempts to rewrite history for the sake of domestic political gains, a Russian Embassy statement said.
The remains of 12 Red Army soldiers were exhumed from the war grave after authorities removed the statue.
The statue was then re-erected at the Defence Forces cemetery, about three kilometres (two miles) from the previous location.
The remains of four soldiers were handed over upon request to relatives in Russia and Ukraine, Estonia's Defence Ministry said.
The remaining eight were buried near the Bronze Soldier in Tuesday's ceremony.

STORYLINE
New American troops pouring into southern Afghanistan will allow NATO-led forces to drive deeper into the heart of the Taliban insurgency, the Dutch general commanding allied forces in the region said on Wednesday.
US President Barack Obama has ordered 21-thousand troops to Afghanistan and some 10-thousand already have been deployed.
They aim to pacify the vast region and train local forces so the Afghan government can take control and eventually allow foreign soldiers to return home.
In an upbeat assessment of the coalition campaign, Major General Mart de Kruif said the extra troops would strengthen efforts to disrupt the insurgents and combat improvised roadside bombs that are their chief weapon.
The allied forces have been fighting the Taliban for eight years with limited success, and the extra troops are intended to reverse an upswing in insurgency violence.
The NATO-led force in southern Afghanistan is expected to number some 45-thousand troops by the time elections in Afghanistan take place on August 20, De Kruif said.
The Dutch general briefed reporters before a meeting of defence ministers from the eight nations with forces in southern Afghanistan, the United States, Britain, Canada, Australia, the Netherlands, Denmark, Romania and Estonia.
De Kruif commands the sprawling southern Afghanistan region made up of six provinces, four of them bordering Pakistan, which is a Taliban stronghold and major poppy-growing area.
He was to give a similar overview of coalition efforts to the defence ministers at their meeting on Wednesday evening at a castle in the hills of the southern Dutch province of Limburg.
US Defence Secretary Robert Gates flew to the Netherlands early on Wednesday and visited a nearby American war cemetery before attending the meeting.
Speaking ahead of Wednesday's meeting, Gates said he would be emphasising the continuing high importance of keeping this truly an international coalition battling the Taliban in Afghanistan.
The Netherlands American Cemetery and Memorial is home to thousands of graves of unidentified soldiers who died in the Second World War.

STORYLINE:
Estonian government ministers laid flowers at a disputed Soviet statue on Tuesday, the first time the Baltic state has paid tribute to the Red Army while commemorating the Allied victory in World War II.
The government was hoping the gesture would begin a process of reconciliation between ethnic Estonians and Russian-speakers, after Estonian authorities removed a monument to Soviet soldiers from a central square in Tallinn - a move that prompted riots by members of the Russian-speaking minority .
Different nations have different traditions and it is according to Russian tradition to celebrate, to commemorate, the victims of the last war (WWII) on the ninth of May and we are respecting their traditions, Estonian Prime Minister Andrus Ansip told reporters after the ceremony.
Defence Minister Jaak Aaviksoo also participated in the ceremony at Maarjamae memorial ground, which was observed by members of the media and a small group of onlookers.
Aaviksoo said he felt the Estonian government had done its part in the reconciliation effort.
But Russian Ambassador to Estonia, Nikolai Uspensky, refused to take part in the ceremony.
Russia was furious at Estonia's decision to move the statue and a nearby war grave from downtown Tallinn to a site on the outskirts of the city.
On Monday Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, lashed out at the European Union and NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) for doing nothing to stop the monument's relocation.
Russians regard the monument as a tribute to the millions of Soviet soldiers who died fighting the Nazis and liberating nations such as Estonia, while many Estonians regard it as a symbol of Soviet repression and a half-century of occupation.
He solemnly adjusted a ribbon on the wreath as it was placed by the honour guard at the monument.

Urban exploration: Abandoned Soviet military base in Estonia
UPDATE (29.7.2019): The base has been completely leveled. Some local business decided to destroy this historically valuable place. Only a huge pile of bricks remain. This video might be the only recorded footage of that place!
Video footage of abandoned Soviet military base in Saaremaa, Estonia. The base once operated as training center for 11th border detachment of KGB Kingisepp (military unit 2133). When Soviet troops withdrawed from Estonia during the early 1990's base was abandoned and left to decay. Nearly 25 years later its remains still exists. Recorded with shaky hands and old camera. I tried to document as much as possible in short period of time.

Prince Harry pays tribute to Estonian troops
Prince Harry thanked Estonia for fighting alongside British troops in Afghanistan as he visited the Baltic country.
Harry began his visit in the capital Tallinn, laying a wreath at a monument honouring those killed during Estonia's 1918 - 1920 War of Independence.
Hundreds of people lined the streets of Tallinn, waving Union Jack flags as 29-year-old Harry, in military regalia, marched to the capital's central Freedom Square accompanied by soldiers of the Duke of Lancaster's Regiment.

Estonian veterans of the 20th Waffen Grenadier Division of the Nazi SS gathered in the Estonian village of Sinimae on Saturday to commemorate their loses in the battle of Tannenberg on Saturday. The annual gathering was dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Tannenberg Line, where Nazi and Red Army troops fought between July and August 1944.
Hundreds of veterans, their families, and nationalist activists commemorated the anniversary. Attendees performed the Estonian national anthem and laid wreaths at a memorial dedicated to soldiers who died in the battle fighting against the Soviet Union on the side of German troops.
Estonian authorities at Tallinn airport reportedly denied a film crew from Zvezda, on their way to cover the gathering in Sinimae, from entering the country on Friday. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has condemned the commemoration, calling it an attempt to honour former members of the SS.

2. THE PEOPLE WILL NOT FORGET
The War of Independence (1918–1920) is the most significant war in Estonia’s recent history. The erection of monuments began already during the war. This was not an official campaign, but a grassroots initiative. Each parish commemorated its fallen. Therefore, these monuments were especially dear to people.
Right after Estonia's annexation, the communist regime began to destroy the monuments of the War of Independence – the memory of an independent Estonian state had to be erased. But the people did not give up their history. At the risk of being deported to Siberia, many of the monuments commemorating the War of Independence were hidden, but in 1988, during the Singing Revolution, they were restored. This was like waking from a spell. In a few years, this restoration of the monuments was joined by the restoration of the Republic of Estonia.
CHERISHED AND PROTECTED. Ten steps for safe and strong Estonia. #cherishedandprotected
Ten short documentaries about how Estonians who lost their freedom during the Second World War persistently maintained their will for freedom and, step by step, rebuilt their defence capability, together with the state. Today, Estonia is a full member of the major Western organizations, and the country's defensive capability and will to protect are significant. Estonia is better protected than ever before.

Eesti Lipu Päev - Estonian Flag Day, Tallinn 2019

Flag raising ceremony to mark Estonian tricolor 135th anniversary
Tuesday is Flag Day in Estonia, the 135th anniversary of the consecration of the original blue, black and white flag that was later adopted as Estonia's national flag.
The event is to be marked by the traditional raising of the national flag at 7 a.m., in the Governor's Garden at Toompea and in the shadow of Pikk Hermann Tower.
The ceremony is free to the public, with Pikk Hermann also open, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. (tickets are to be allocated specific times), according to a Riigikogu press release.
The flag raising will be carried out by representatives of the Estonian Song and Dance Celebration Foundation, the Institute of the Estonian Language, and Gustav Adolf Grammar School.
President of the Riigikogu Henn Põlluaas (EKRE), and Chairman of the Estonian Flag Association Jüri Trei, are to speak at the ceremony. Head of the Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church (EELK) Archbishop Urmas Viilma will say the words of blessing.
The anniversary coincides with the 800th anniversary of the national flag of Denmark. According to legend, that country's flag, the Dannebrog fell from the sky after the Battle of Lyndanisse. The battle was fought on June 15, 1219, near Tallinn, during the Livonian Crusade, between the Kingdom of Denmark and its German allies, and local Estonian tribes.
Postimees introduces new slogan to newspaper nameplate
Head of the Danish Flag Society Erik Fage-Pedersen is also partaking in the ceremony.
Honor guards from the volunteer Defence League (Kaitseliit) and its affiliated bodies, the Women's Home Defence (Naiskodukaitse ), the Young Eagles (Noored Kotkad) and the Home Daughters (Kodutütred) are also attending, together with representatives from the Scouts, Guides, and various academic organizations, societies and schools.
The Estonian Defence Forces (EDF) orchestra is performing, together with choirs from the Estonian Female Song Society and various Tallinn schools.
The choirs are to sing Hoia, Jumal, Eestit (God Save Estonia - music by Juhan Aavik, words by Aleksander Leopold Raudkepp) and Eesti lipp (Flag of Estonia - music by Enn Võrk, words by Martin Lipp).
The Estonian flag was first made in spring 1884 by the Estonian Students' Society (EÜS), and was blessed and consecrated in Otepää on June 4.
