Hiking in the Kadisha Valley - Lebanon
Hiking in the Kadisha Valley - Lebanon. I left Bcharre by car and parked at the bottom of the valley. From there I hiked to the Qannoubin Monastery and back.
The whole trip took me less than 5 hours but I didn’t do any side trips to the hermitage or cave churches. I only visited Deir Mar Elisha, Deir Qannoubin and the St. Marina Chapel on the route. For me, the hiking was more than enough. I hope you enjoy my video of the Qadisha Valley. Would you go hiking solo?

Reaching the monastery of Hamatoura is quite an adventure,
It is a pleasure to arrive at the monastery above the cliff facing Kousba. Below, runs the water of Kadisha river which on reaching Tripoli changes its name and becomes the river Abu Ali.

Hadath El Jebbeh, Lebanon - We drove from Beirut to Hadath El Jebbeh, a small village on the edge of Kadisha Valley in Lebanon. In the village, we met up with Ward from Ward Cafe Trottoir who runs a cosy mountain restaurant serving traditional Lebanese food and local mountain dishes.
Here are a few of the delicious ingredients and Lebanese foods I learned about:
Husrum - Sour, young grape vinegar
Labneh - Creamy cheese made from yoghurt, essential in Lebanese cuisine
Shanklish - Aged and dried Levantine cheese
Awarma eggs - Eggs with salted lamb fat
Macaroon Toum - Lebanese garlic pasta
Kishk - Dried yoghurt with bulgur wheat, made into porridge
Kadisha Valley - After an amazing meal with Ward, we continued our journey into the beautiful Kadisha Valley and visited the spectacular Deir Mar Elisha monastery.
Cedars of God - The symbol of Lebanon, as has been for thousands of years is the Cedar of Lebanon, also known as the Cedars of God. They were spectacular to see in person, they are truly majestic trees.
Ehden, Lebanon - Finally, we ended this day in Lebanon in the town of Ehden for some sahlab - milk pudding.

Hike with EDDY - QANNOUBINE - Kadisha Valley
Ouadi Qadisha is one of the most important settlement sites of the first Christian monasteries in the world, and its monasteries, many of which of great age, are set in an extraordinarily rugged landscape. Nearby are the vestiges of the great cedar forest of Lebanon, highly prized in ancient times for the construction of great religious buildings.
The rocky cliffs of the Qadisha Valley have served over centuries as a place for meditation and refuge. The Valley comprises the largest number of monasteries and hermitages dating back to the very first spread of Christianism. The main monasteries are those of St Anthony of Quzhayya, Our Lady of Hauqqa, Qannubin and Mar Lichaa. This Valley bears unique witness to the very centre of Maronite eremitism. Its natural caves, carved into the hillsides - almost inaccessible - and decorated with frescoes testifying to an architecture specifically conceived for the spiritual and vital needs of an austere life. There exist numerous terraces for growing grain by the monks, hermits and peasants who lived in the region; several of these terraces are still under cultivation today.
Since the beginnings of Christianity, the Qadisha Valley has given shelter to monastic communities. The trees of the cedar forest are the survivors of a sacred forest and one of the most prized building materials in ancient times.
The monasteries of the Qadisha Valley are among the most significant surviving examples of the strength of the Christian faith.
