Batik ART | Fabric Painting |Indonasia |malayalam/Silver Museum Bali
Batik is a very special art, which requires a lot of patience and skill. It is a traditional fabric printing. The word Batik means drawing with wax. The technique must be thousands of years old. It is proved that this art already appeared in the first centuries in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia.
One suspects that it originated in India. Batik is quite different from the batik in Malaysia or the batik from Thailand. It is different in design, motif and the way in which one produces batik.
In this technique, paraffin wax is used to cover components of the substance before this substance is dipped in a dye bath. So keep the part was covered with is the original color.
Batik making is a process with wax (candle wax), then dyeing, drying, and then cooking the material substances. Everything is done by hand.
It requires a skill and over again reviewing what you've created. Therefore no work resembles the other!
Who's going home without a Batik shirt?
There are two main types of batik in Indonesia today; hand-painted and block printed. These types differ in production techniques, motif and aesthetic expression, and are often classified according to the tool that has been used. The painter uses the canting, a small copper container with one or more differently sized pipes.
The container is attached to a handle made of wood or bamboo. The canting is filled with molten wax and used to trace the outlines of the pattern on the fabric.
The wax is usually composed of bee's wax, paraffin wax, resin, fat and a synthetic wax mixed together in varying proportions. The mixing builds on individual experience and skill. Each component has special qualities that affect the appearance of the finished textile. Bee's wax melts at a low temperature, is flexible, attaches easily to the textile surface, and is easily removed.
Only the parts with wax remain unpainted of course.
This process can be repeated with different colors.
Silver is the basic material for traditional silver jewelry making. Initially the silver sheet is cut with the help of metal sheet cutter according to the required size and design. Then the silver sheet is slightly heated to make it soft using hand gas burner and marked with the metal compass. The silver wire is cut and bent to a round shape. Then the shaped silver wire is placed on the silver sheet by dipping the wire in solution (water-soluble flux paste and water) and heated so that the wire fused smartly with the sheet. Artisan checks whether there is an air gap or not. If there is any gap, the small silver pieces, which are dipped in flux solution, are placed in-between to fill the gap. Then small round shaped thin metal wires are arranged by following the actual design and again soldered.
The thin silver wire is cut in to small pieces and dipped in solution made of water and water-soluble flux paste. Then the small pieces are arranged in a row and fired with the hand gas burner so that the small silver sticks are converted into tiny silver balls. These tiny silver balls are immersed in solution and then arranged carefully in a circular form by glancing the real design. Then the article is again fired and cooled by sinking in normal water. The negative area around the design is removed cautiously with the help of metal sheet cutter. After removing the unwanted metal, the sharp edges are smoothened by using filer. The designed article is embossed by hammering the customized impression tool on the article. Once finished with the embossing, flat round shaped silver wire is added at the center and fused with the article.
Artisan works with the detailing part and the clasp for the traditional silver pendant is attached by soldering. Where as in the other hand small bells are made manually by heating the tiny silver pieces, which turns in to sphere shape and the hook, is attached to get a bell form and soldered to the silver pendant. Then the article is polished and washed with the tamarind water. Enameling is done neatly to give an ethnic look.
