A day trip to the wonderful Delamont Country Park!
DELAMONT MILLENIUM MEGALITH STONE, TALLEST in UK
The massive pinnacle of Delamont Megalith stone stands overlooking the scenic Strangford Lough in south Down near Downpatrick. It is the tallest modern Megalith in the British Isles! It is approximately 12 metres in height. 10 metres above ground.
It is 47 ton in weight. A single granite slab cut from a local quarry in the Mournes.
It stands in 3 metres deep concrete foundations.
After several years planning and preparation on the 26th June 1999 the stone was finally raised up into position by 1000 school teens from across the religious divide and from across the province. It took the various teams well over 2 hours to pull the stone into position.
The project was funded by a £250,000 lottery grant. The other half of the money was raised locally.
Information boards nearby provide an excellent account of thow this all was done.
'Alan in Belfast''s' blog is worth visiting in this respect.

The Strangford Stone, Delamont
The Strangford Stone is the tallest modern megalith in the British Isles, standing at over 10 metres tall.
On 26th June, 1999, over 1000 young people came together to pull this stone into its current attitude.
The 47 ton stone was manually hewn from the Mourne Mountains, using the traditional method of plugs and feathers, from a rock over 200 tonnes in weight.
Carved into the stone are the precise positions of the 4 inner planets of the solar system on 26th June, 1999.
The stone brought together young people from all walks of life, and was seen as a monument to a future of peace in Northern Ireland.
Situated on the shores of Strangford Lough, the stone faces south to the mountain of Slieve Donard, its birthplace.
Flight details: it was a most miserable day with the threat of rain, poor visibility and very cold. Unfortunately, I was not able to see the Mourne Mountains due to the weather, maybe next time.

For Sale - Castle Island, Castle Island Road, Downpatrick, Co Down, BT30 7LD
Spectacular residential and agricultural island
Excellent views and amenity
116 acres in total (47 hectares)
4-bedroom modern house
Castle Island is set at the mouth of the Quoile River to the south of Strangford Lough. The island enjoys a spectacular setting with southerly views over the Quoile River and beyond to the Mourne mountains, and an excellent outlook over Strangford Lough to the north. The island is home to Quoile Yacht Club, which offers some of the finest facilities in Strangford Lough, and is bound by the Quoile Pondage Nature Reserve and Bird Hide.
Though nestled in private surroundings, the island conveniently lies a short distance from several towns including Downpatrick (4 miles) and Strangford (6 miles). There is a regular car/passenger ferry crossing from Strangford Lough to Portaferry, connecting to the Ards Peninsula. There are plenty of local interest points nearby, including Castle Ward Forest Park (5.5 miles) and Delamont Country Park (6.5 miles).
Castle Island is a private residential island extending to about 116 acres with about 1.8 miles of coastline. The house on Castle Island is a modern, detached property with a fine situation which is strategically positioned to take full advantage of the stunning views across the Quoile River and Mourne Mountains beyond. A key feature of the island is the direct road access to the mainland via Castle Island Road and onto Strangford Road which connects Strangford with Downpatrick.
The extensive block of farmland lies within a perimeter fence and is well-suited for the grazing of livestock and production of silage/hay. There is an abundance of amenity on the island including wildlife, and sporting opportunities.

Killyleagh - The Hans Sloane Trail
Killyleagh's noted physician, scientist and collector, botanist and chocolatier!
Hans Sloane was born in Killyleagh in 1660, was the youngest of seven sons born to Sarah Hickes and Alexander Sloan.
Only three sons reached adulthood and all three were to leave Killyleagh to pursue their careers; James in Parliament, William in commerce and Hans in medicine.
In 1687, Doctor Hans Sloane was given an opportunity that was to change his life forever. He was invited to accompany the new Governor of Jamaica, Christopher Monck, 2nd Duke of Albemarle, as his personal physician. By this stage in his career he was a skilled naturalist, so Sloane recorded everything he saw and, in particular, collected plants and animals, shells and rocks. His plant collection alone amounted to more than 800 specimens, and together with his animal specimens were to be the foundation of his great collections.
Local Historian, Deirdre Armstrong, takes us on a tour of Killyleagh and explores the life of this remarkable man, who during his varied carrier, also became the developer of drinking chocolate for medicinal purposes.

Killyleagh...where legends are born
There are few towns in Ireland with a history as rich as Killyleagh.
Situated on the shores of Strangford Lough, it is dominated by its picture postcard Castle that has been occupied by the Hamilton family for more than 400 years.
This broadcast quality DVD, narrated by UTV's Paul Clark, tells the remarkable story of a remarkable town.
Norman conquests, Scottish settlers, the Famine, Lobster fishing on Strangford Lough...it's all here as we recall the heroes from the past including Sir Hans Sloane (founder of the British Museum and inventor of milk chocolate), Rev Edward Hincks (decipherer of the ancient lanquages of the East), and Sir Henry Blackwood (a witness to Nelson's will at Trafalgar).
You will hear from Lt Col Denys Rowan-Hamilton on the Hamilton's and life in a castle, and see rare archive footage of the tanning process at Shrigley and the flax spinning that once made Killyleagh famous as a linen town.
And David Healy recalls his childhood days growing up in Killyleagh in an exclusive interview for this DVD.
