RUSSIA: MOSCOW: DOLPHIN CENTRE MAY HAVE TO BE CLOSED
Russian/Nat
The Moscow dolphinarium is having a hard time staying afloat.
The dolphin centre can't afford to feed its finned performers or pay the energy bills and is on the verge of closing.
One of its dolphins has already been moved to the Black Sea, and more will leave Moscow if the dolphin centre doesn't get the money it needs to keep going.
It's one of Moscow's star attractions.
The Moscow dolphinarium plays to a packed house on weekends as hundreds of children drag their parents to see the dolphin show.
The three dollar ticket price -- kept low to remain affordable -- makes it one of the cheapest forms of entertainment available in Moscow.
The show proudly presents its stars of the water as dolphin lovers of all ages watch them fly through the air.
For some of these families the show is a weekly staple.
But the dolphins' stay in Moscow could soon come to an end.
The dolphinarium is facing a financial crisis and will soon have to close its doors forever.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
Of course we all regret it. The government can't support the dolphins. We can't let them live in bad conditions the way people in Russia do. People can survive in bad conditions, but not dolphins.
SUPER CAPTION: Alexandra Kiroktova, dolphin fan
The centre can't keep up with the growing inflation.
Although there is a demand for the shows, ticket sales don't generate enough money to pay for all the expenses.
But the dolphinarium doesn't want to raise its ticket prices and risk losing a huge part of its audience.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
The cost of utilities, rent, and fish keeps growing and growing. We don't have the money for it anymore, these costs have gotten higher than our profits. But we can't raise ticket prices because then tickets will cost too much for the kids.
SUPER CAPTION: Lev Muhamedov, director of Moscow Dolphinarium
The dolphinarium had to get rid of one of its dolphins just a few days ago.
This eight-year-old Beluga dolphin named 'Baton' was moved out of its Moscow swimming pool because the dolphinarium couldn't afford to feed it anymore.
'Baton' will be transported to the Black Sea in the south of Russia where it will continue training.
The centre has two more Belugas and four bottle-nosed dolphins left.
Together the dolphins eat about 120 kilograms (55 pounds) of fish each day.
But unlike Moscow's circuses, where the state pays to feed the animals, the dolphinarium has to pay for the 15-thousand dollar monthly menu.
But it's not only the food that takes up the money.
The dolphinarium doesn't have its own building so it has to pay 50-thousand dollars a month to rent this swimming centre.
And the trainers don't receive any subsidies or tax breaks from the state.
The director of the dolphinarium says he has one month left to find a sponsor who will help keep the dolphins in the capital.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
We've been working for 13 years and have never received any sponsorships or state subsidies. If we get a sponsor then we'll be able to stay in Moscow. It's the only way.
SUPER CAPTION: Lev Muhamedov, director of Moscow Dolphinarium
Although the dolphinarium gets constant invitations to go abroad, the trainers want the dolphins to stay in Moscow to perform for their home crowd.
But Moscow has had to say goodbye to one of its brightest stars.
Baton is getting ready for his 35-hour journey to the Black Sea on this truck.
He may end up performing in a dolphinarium in Greece or Egypt.
The rest of Moscow's dolphins may soon follow.

The legacy of the estimated US$50 billion spent on those Sochi Games is a variety of tourist options.
Fans can relax in the beach bars of Adler, a town near the stadium, or hike in the mountains above the city.
Ahead of the World Cup, the Sochi Dolphinarium prepared a football show in which the dolphins play football with a sea lion.
The sea lion acts as a goal keeper and kicks away the ball which the dolphins throw at it.
Sometimes it seems that they play better than some of the human football players, says dolphin trainer Svyatoslav Gundarenko.
The Sochi dolphinarium, situated in downtown Sochi, is the biggest in Eastern Europe.
It opened in 2012 in one of the Sochi's oldest amusement parks Rivyera.
There are 7 bottlenose dolphins, native to the Black Sea, two white whales and sea lions. According to Gundarenko, the dolphins here were born in captivity as Russia banned the dolphin hunt in 2003.
With its sub-tropical climate, Sochi has hot humid summers and mild often snowless winters and is widely known as a beach destination.
Numerous cafes and restaurants line the beach promenades. Royal Fish is an Italian and Mediterranean cuisine restaurant where chef Davido Corso uses fresh local products to create high quality dishes.
The restaurant has a terrace overlooking the sea.
Local tourist firms offer Sochi visitors guided tours to the Olympic village, ski-resort Rosa Khutor as well as hikes to Sochi's picturesque mountains, caves and waterfalls.
Sochi is also home to UNESCO heritage colchic forests that survived the ice age.
In 2016-2017, 6.5 million people visited Sochi making it the top tourist destination in Russia, ahead of traditional leader St. Petersburg.
On average, Sochi accommodates four to five million people a year.
Rosa Khutor, Sochi's Olympic heritage ski-resort, is one of the most popular destinations. Imitating European ski-resorts, it has numerous restaurants and cantinas.
Che Kharcho is a restaurant serving local Caucasian cuisine which is well known and very popular all around Russia. It includes traditional dishes from neighboring Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan and Russia's North Caucasus republics and is heavily based on Middle Eastern cuisine.
Che Kharcho is a home food restaurant, we offer to our guests home food, we cook food the way it's cooked at home, so we based our menu on the most simple products, says restaurant chef, Yevgeny Kochetkov.
With 600,000 people, Sochi is a vibrant city with charged nightlife. Cocos' bar tender Anton Belash says his venue was the first cocktail bar in the city.
They take traditional recipes and rethink them with local spirits such as Georgian vodka and local fruits and herbs such as feijoa and tarragon.
GQ Russia included Cocos in its top 10 bars in Russia list in 2017.
The 2018 FIFA World Cup runs until 15 July.

Russia: Activists, authorities concerned over ‘whale prison’ in Far East
COURTESY FROM 50S ONWARDS: CENTRE FOR ADAPTATION OF MARINE MAMMALS IN NAKHODKA
Subscribe to our channel! rupt.ly/subscribe
Drone footage filmed on Tuesday, January 22 reveals how 87 beluga whales and 11 killer whales are apparently being held in small temporary enclosures in the Nakhodka Bay in Primorski Krai. Archive footage from November shows some of the whales in captivity.
Local activists believe that the animals are being kept to be sold to Asian aquariums, although the whales can only be caught for scientific and educational purposes.
They are being held in small enclosures belonging to the Centre for the Adaptation of Marine Mammals, which rents them to four fishing companies, 'Afalina', 'Sochi delphinarium', 'The White Whale' and 'The Far East Aquarium.'
According to the Amur Basin Environmental Prosecutor's Office, the Federal Fishery Agency's (FFA) decision to allocate the fishing quotas to the four companies is illegal.
The Federal Fishery Agency, for its part, stated that the volumes of aquatic biological resources provided in 2018 for fisheries, educational and cultural-educational purposes correspond to the total admissible catch and FFA's authority does not apply to the control of the further movement of aquatic biological resources to the places of cultural and educational activities, including abroad.
Between January 18-19 the Primorski Department of the Border Guard Service of the Russian Federal Security Service conducted audit in the Centre for Adaptation.
RUPTLY talked to one of the ecologists, Dmitry Lisitsyn, who emphasised that the mammals' condition gives cause for concern. At least six of the eleven killer whales are suffering from epidermal abrasion which was most likely caused by frostbite and being confined in a small space.
According to the Director of Afalina Aleksey Reshetov, beluga whales and killer whales were caught legally under a permit issued by the FFA. He said the total amount of mammals being kept in the Adaptation Centre is lower than the number of animals allowed to be caught.
All biological resources are the property of Russia, but after the catch they become the property of those who fished them. All the mammals [in the Adaptation Centre] are being monitored by qualified professionals, fed well, nothing threatens their life and health. But they suffer stress because of multiple inspections, Reshetov said.
The Investigation Department for the Primorski Territory stated on January 28 that a criminal case was initiated by the Investigative Department into the illegal extraction of aquatic biological resources.
Primorye's animal activists have also appealed to the Yuzhno-Sakhalin city court demanding the release of the killer and beluga whales from the so-called 'whale prison.' The court ordered the respondents and interested parties to submit their objections to the statement of claim before March 7.

Russia is the realm of tigers, bears and volcanoes.
Russia is the largest country in the world. In many of its parts it remains an unexplored world full of miracles. May this world be preserved for the generations that will come after us.
With these words begins the documentary Russia: In the Kingdom of Tigers, Bears and Volcanoes about the wild nature of the country. The film this week goes to the German film distribution. Russian viewers could see shots from it on the screens of their TVs: a 90-minute film is based on a six-part television program The Wild Nature of Russia. The television film was shot in cooperation with the British National Geographic TV channel, German TV companies NDR and WDR, the Russian First Channel and several other sponsors. A group of German filmmakers was led by Jörn Röver, a biologist by training, a journalist, director and producer specializing in popular science films on flora and fauna. The project's main operator is also a well-known German documentalist, a veterinarian in his first profession, Henry M. Mix. The documentary film Russia: In the Realm of Tigers, Bears and Volcanoes shows, as is already clear from the title, exclusively natural landscapes and animals. People in the frame do not, as there is no mention of things not related to flora and fauna.

Jailed Pussy Riot member starts hunger strike against Russia prison 'slave labour'
Jailed member of Russia's Pussy Riot punk band Nadezhda Tolokonnikova has started a hunger strike...

Euronews is available in 13 other languages:
Jailed member of Russia's Pussy Riot punk band Nadezhda Tolokonnikova has started a hunger strike in protest at what she described as 'slave labour' in her prison.
In a letter to her husband she said inmates at the penal colony were forced to work up to 17 hours a day sewing police uniforms.
She also accused a senior prison official of sending her a death threat.
Husband Peter Verzilov published the letter on the internet.
Before this situation unfolded in the last several weeks, Nadia tried to change the situation internally, from inside the prison. But obviously she understood that this was impossible and at the end of her efforts, they just led to a murder threat from the prison administration, Verzilov told journalists.
Tolokonnikova was sentenced to two years in jail in August 2012 after performing what the band called a 'punk prayer' in a Moscow cathedral in protest against the rule of President Vladimir Putin.
