The Dempster Highway is easily one of the most epic road trips in Canada, if not the entire world. Starting in Dawson, Yukon, the 700-km dirt road takes you all the way up to Tombstone Territorial Park, past the Arctic Circle, and into the Northern community of Inuvik.
During our 150-day road trip across Canada, this was one of our highlights. Driving in the fall, we loved the fall colours, and the incredible mountain scenery, as well as the tundra!
However, driving the Dempster Highway requires some planning, which is why we've created this video with some tips for driving the Dempster Highway!

Road to the Arctic Ocean, Driving the Dempster Highway to Tuktoyaktuk | Go North Ep 12
Road to the Arctic Ocean, Driving the Dempster Highway to Tuktoyaktuk | Go North Ep 12
This episode chronicles our trip up the Dempster Highway and the new Inuvik to Tuktoyaktuk Highway that makes it to the Arctic Ocean in Canada.
Check out the associated blog post on our website here -
Road to the Arctic Ocean - Driving the Dempster Highway to Tuktoyaktuk:
The journey starts out at the beginning of the highway in the Yukon territory just south of Dawson City. From here the highway winds through multiple mountain ranges, along rivers and streams, across tundra and flat plains and the massive Mackenzie River delta.
We made stops at Tombstone Territorial Park, Eagle Plains, Fort McPhearson and Inuviuk before making it to Tuktoyaktuk.
The road was generally in good condition when we drove it, but it's very long, dusty in dry weather or muddy in wet and has very limited services, so good vehicle condition and tires are a must. This road traverses some of the most remote land accessible by vehicles in North America.
The Dempster Highway is a popular run for capable RV's, adventure cycles, and overland vehicles, but most any vehicle can make it. We spent almost 3 weeks camping and exploring this road and loved every minute of it.
This episode we take the truck camper as far north as you can drive in Canada on the dempster highway through Inuvik all the way to the arctic ocean and the town of Tuktoyaktuk.

We are originally from the USA we left home in 2013 after graduating from college. We then returned back to the US a year later to build a normal life. We quickly discovered that it wasn’t for us and left home for good in 2015. We were nomadic for over three years across six continents and 80 countries. It took us 500 blog posts, thousands of nights in different beds, a few horrible meals and a ton of amazing ones until we chose to base ourselves in the Canadian Rockies. Now we travel for half the year and explore the mountains for the other half. We are incredibly grateful for the life we live and hope we can help you meet your travel goals too!

Google street view timelapse. Dempster Highway (Yukon, Canada)
The Dempster Highway, also referred to as Yukon Highway 5 and Northwest Territories Highway 8, is a Canadian highway that connects the Klondike Highway in the Yukon to Inuvik, Northwest Territories on the Mackenzie River delta. During the winter months, the highway extends another 194 km (121 mi) to Tuktoyaktuk, on the northern coast of Canada, using frozen portions of the Mackenzie River delta as an ice road (the Tuktoyaktuk Winter Road). The highway crosses the Peel River and the Mackenzie Rivers using a combination of seasonal ferry service and ice bridges.
The highway begins about 40 km (25 mi) east of Dawson City, Yukon on the Klondike Highway and extends 736 km (457 mi) to Inuvik.

FAMOUS ROADS to the ARCTIC OCEAN | Ep2: DEMPSTER HIGHWAY & Dawson City
Driving the winter road to the Arctic Ocean (B.C.Canada) we go from Dawson City to Dempster Highway. We hit the challenges of driving in winter on infamous roads to the Arctic Ocean. Whitehorse is the capital of the Yukon. We pass Sign Post Forest and then hop on the Klondike Highway to land into the quirky town of Dawson City (Canada). Driving the start of Dempster Highway to Tuktoyaktuk has its challenges. The highway will get us to Inuvik and Tuktoyaktuk.
Thanks to Mazda for sponsoring this trip and the CX Expedition team for making this winter drive to the Arctic Ocean possible and safe! This trip took place in early December.
