»» ABOUT ME ««
My name is Shameer, I am a photographer and I live in London. My mission is to hike, mountain bike or whatever it takes to find the hidden gems of the British Isles so that I can bring you on my journey with the most beautiful photographs.
Why? I want to inspire you and the younger generation to appreciate our natural environment, to protect it and to venture out and live a little. Go explore, make new friends and see new places. Make a difference to your life and wellbeing.
My recent lightbulb moment answered one of the biggest questions of my life, “what could I do to inspire others to protect our natural environment that is so crucial for our mental health and wellbeing?” – It was a simple answer… I would explore the wilderness, story-tell through photographs and video, and tell everyone about it. Especially, to empower the next generation to protect our wilderness by actually visiting these stunning places.

Round The Surrey Hills With Clan Line - 6th March 2010
Once more unto the Surrey hills with Clan Line. This time we start on the footbridge overlooking St Margarets station, which can be a bit of a gamble as the bridge is rather shaky and it only takes one person passing at the critical moment to spoil a video. This time we were lucky.
For the first time ever, as we were joining the M25 from the M3, we saw the train crossing the bridge that spans the motorway and it was amusing to see all the brake lights coming on as drivers slowed for a better look.
With few vantage points between Woking and Guildford to chose from we went to our old favourite, Worplesdon station.
Finally comes the view from Denbies Hillside as the train descends the bank from Gomshall and approaches Dorking.
Wine Tasting in England - TSV 13/19
This week we went wine tasting at Denbies, and then back in to Kew Gardens to see more of the Spring flowers, during the week, I had a play with my gopro, and the Premier League Trophy came for a visit on it's way to Manchester!

Quick camera test, nothing too exciting. Great road...
Car is Qashqai +2 (what an animal), camera is the Lidl £79 Silvercrest HD Video Recorder that I picked up today. Mount is the Hague heavy duty suction mount on the drivers window.
Low light is a bit of a problem but otherwise, pretty good! Will test in the Clio soon.

35028 - The Surrey Hills VSOE 04-04-14
Another opportunity to see 35028 Clan Line on the Surrey Hills VSOE at a location that I visited back in 2010. Denbies' Hillside, near dorking, has one of the best views in the Surrey Hills, and I decided to return to film 35028 as it raced down Gomshall Bank.

35028 Clan Line Battles Damp Devon after Cruising Sunny Surrey.
Belmond British Pullman. 11th August, The Torbay Express. 20th August.
A few days break in and around the Surrey Hills allowed a brief view of 35028 in charge of the Belmond British Pullman circular dining tour. 8 miles from Gatwick take-off, Condor-Thomas Cook, Boeing 757-300 climbs through sun and high cloud heading for even sunnier climes as a stiff breeze rocks the beech trees, already showing signs of the coming Autumn. The peace of the hillside, a haven for as many butterflies as I have ever seen in one day, is briefly broken by 35028 as it rounds the bend at the top of Gomshall Bank, rushes down under Denbies Hillside and heads away towards Dorking. One week later and back in Devon, how the weather has changed as the big Bulleid fights it’s way through the driving rain trying to make up a 30 minute deficit, the result of a medical emergency at Exeter, up the valley to Kingskerswell on the Torbay Branch. The loss of path on the P&DR allowed me to get ahead of the train, but only just! With no time to set up a tripod, a rice bag had to suffice on the bridge parapet at Bascombe Road in order to capture a very impressive climb of Churston Bank, normally a graveyard for Pacifics in wet conditions. The return is captured in swirling misty rain, impossible to keep off the lens, at Greenway and Preston Sands and the impressive performance of 35028, like the rain! continues unabated.

Brown Hairstreak (Bookham Common) July 2014
Female Brown Hairstreak, probably shortly after emergence, very close to the footpath & centimetres from the ground and hadn't moved after numerous photographs. Flew off as soon as I decided to film. Hardly had time to press the start button! Beautiful British species usually seen egg laying on Blackthorn (its larval food plant). Males much harder to see, as they spend most of their time high up in the canopy of Ash, mostly. I found this hours after getting back from France, where I didn't see any.
Tangmere - 01.08.08
Tangmere No.34067 on the Cathedrals Express with a 10 carriage train. Filmed at Denbies Wine Estate, just north of Dorking, Surrey. This scenic location, with vines in the foreground and Ranmore Common as the backdrop, is the largest vineyard in England.
Routing:
Victoria-Leatherhead-Dorking-Chichester and return.
As everyone else charged off to find another photograhic location, I took the opportunity for coffee and cake at the vineyard.

From Butterfly Wings to Metamaterials
John Pendry of Imperial College London explains how the wing structure of the Blue Adonis butterfly inspired and informed his cutting-edge research into 'metamaterials'.
As the saying goes: the caterpillar does all the work but the butterfly gets all the publicity.* In this case, however, the publicity may be well deserved.
Organisms such as the Blue Adonis possess unique microstructures on their wing surface which diffract blue light and lend them their iridescent blue appearance. In a similar way, metamaterials are being built from modified microstructures and components smaller than the wavelength of the light. By bending light around objects they are being used in the development of new materials including the world's first invisibility cloak.
Similar work is being carried out in optical computing by Brigham Young University (BYU) with the natural photonic crystals inside the scales of Brazilian beetles. Our intern Ed also unearthed a great video from the Lawrence Hall of Science (University of California) zooming in the wing of a Blue Morpho butterfly -- from 10 centimeters to 200 nanometers.
