Edfu temple - Horus temple - Horus the Sky god
The temple of Edfu is the largest temple dedicated to Horus (the Sky god0 and Hathor of Dendera.
Since Horus was said to be the sky, he was considered to also contain the sun and moon.It became said that the sun was his right eye and the moon his left, and that they traversed the sky when he, a falcon, flew across it. HORUS was most often depicted as a falcon, most likely a lanner falcon or peregrine falcon, or as a man with a falcon headIt. This temple was the center of several festivals sacred to Horus. Each year, Hathor travelled south from her temple at Denderah to visit Horus at Edfu, and this event marking their sacred marriage was the occasion of a great festival and pilgrimage.

Dendera (gr. Tentyra; obie nazwy powstały ze staroegipskiego Enettentore) — miasto w Górnym Egipcie, na prawym brzegu Nilu; w starożytności ośrodek kultu bogini Hathor.
Junet - Dendera, nazwa napisana hieroglifami.
Miasto istniało już w okresie Starego Państwa. W okresie Ptolemejskim zbudowano tu jej świątynię. Król Nektanebo I z XXX dynastii zbudował tu swoje mammisi, jest to najstarszy zabytek tego typu odnaleziony w Egipcie. Podczas panowania rzymskiego powstały tu: świątynia Izydy (z czasów Oktawiana Augusta), mammisi Nerona oraz kaplica Nowego Roku.
Najlepiej zachowanym zabytkiem na terenie Dendery jest świątynia Hathor. Jej budowę rozpoczęto za panowania Ptolemeusza IX a zakończono w czasach Nerona. Świątynia stanęła na miejscu starszej budowli, pochodzącej najprawdopodobniej z czasów Cheopsa. Plan zachowanej do dnia dzisiejszego budowli mocno się różni od klasycznych budowli egipskich. Świątyni nie poprzedzają pylony, nie ma też dziedzińca z portykami. Budowla została zwrócona fasadą w kierunku Nilu. Dziedziniec otoczony murem poprzedza wejście do pronaosu (dużej sali ozdobionej 24 kolumnami). Za nim znajduje się sala hypostylowa, zamknięta po bokach pomieszczeniami magazynowymi, pracownią perfum, skarbcem itp. Za nią umieszczono salę ofiarną i pomieszczenie poprzedzające sanktuarium. Wokół sanktuarium biegnie pasaż z 11 kaplicami, poświęconymi różnym bóstwom i symbolom religijnym. Na dachu, dostępnym schodami znajdującymi się przy murze, pomiędzy salą hypostylową a kaplicami, zbudowano kiosk Nowego Roku. Kolumny sali hypostylowej i pronaosu zdobione są hatoryckimi głowicami. Sufit jednej z kaplic w kiosku pokrywał okrągły fresk z symbolicznym wyobrażeniem nieba: gwiazdozbiorów, planet i gwiazd, tzw. Zodiak z Dendery (oryginał znajduje się obecnie w Luwrze w Paryżu, w świątyni pozostawiono kopię). Podobne przedstawienie, jednak na planie kwadratu, znajduje się w sali hypostylowej.
Świątynia poprzedzona została mammisi Augusta. Pomiędzy nim a murem otaczającym świątynię zachowane są ruiny kościoła koptyjskiego.
Na południe od świątyni znajdują się ruiny niewielkiej świątyni Izydy, na zachód – święte jezioro.
W pobliżu ruin leży miasto Dandara.
