The Island of Doctor Moron Vox Pops Dendy Launch PWS
Wednesday, 23rd March, 2016 saw the launch of a unique, fiercely independent Australian film.
The Island of Doctor Moron® is a film of the live production of this high-energy rock musical. The film, which screened at The Dendy Opera Quays, was sold-out 2 weeks in advance and received a rapturous standing ovation at its conclusion. The film is set to tour Australia, the USA, Europe and the UK this year.
The film is what creator/producer, Chris Dockrill, calls a “hybrid” film of a live show. “We used 14 cameras per show and developed a perfect 5.1 sound track directly off the 48-channel desk. The result is a film that gives the viewers an intimacy with the rock musical that is much closer, more immediate and more powerful than the live show which in itself was over-powering.”
The common comment from many audience members was they “loved the live show but this film is even better”.
There has never before been a cinematic film of a live, completely original, Australian rock musical. In this, we have made history.

Blessed (2009) – Trailer – SFF 19
The 66th Sydney Film Festival – 5-16 June 2019
This achingly moving, harshly powerful film takes us into the world of four mothers whose children are in serious trouble. Frances O’Connor leads a fine cast.
Based on the play Who’s Afraid of the Working Class by Andrew Bovell, Melissa Reeves, Patricia Cornelius and Christos Tsiolkas, Ana Kokkinos’ powerful film is divided into two parts. In the first, The Children, we follow a group of kids who get into trouble in various different ways. In the second, The Mothers, we cover the same time frame but from the perspective of the mothers. The latter are superbly portrayed by Miranda Otto, Deborra-Lee Furness, Frances O’Connor and Victoria Haralabidou, while the cast also includes Wayne Blair, Monica Maughan and William McInnes. There’s not a hint of the story’s theatrical origins in the immensely accomplished direction. Kokkinos sometimes depicts the same incident as seen from two different perspectives, and her sympathy for all of these characters, flawed as some of them are, is palpable, but at the same time the film is a scream of anger directed against parents who neglect their children. The scene in which one of the mothers, Rhonda (O’Connor), discovers what has happened to her children is quite unforgettable. Confronting at times, but honest and powerful, this is surely one of the greatest Australian films of recent years.

Prison was tough enough for outlaw bikie Knuck – but that’s nothing compared to what’s waiting outside. A high-octane Aussie thriller starring Matt Nable, Ryan Corr and Abbey Lee.
You can just about smell the grease and fumes in Stephen McCallum’s punchy debut feature. Welcome to the clubhouse of outlaw bikie gang Copperheads M.C. Its hard-as-nails president, Knuck (Nable), is about to finish a three-year stretch in the slammer. In Knuck’s absence, gang member Paddo (Corr), a smart guy with a vision for the future, has been holding the reins – and making unauthorised deals. With stolen narcotics and Paddo’s ambitious girlfriend, Katrina (Lee), added in to the mix this is not going to be a peaceful return to Knuck’s old-school rule. Briskly paced, vividly photographed and very well performed, 1% feels authentic at every turn. It paints an exciting and compelling picture of those who stand apart from the other 99%.
A lean, mean, well-oiled genre machine, continuing the Australian cinematic tradition of grim, violent portrayals of toxic masculinity. – Liam Dunn, Filmink

Mistaken For Strangers (2013) - Official Trailer
Book your tickets now to a special Q&A screening of MISTAKEN FOR STRANGERS featuring a Q&A with front man Matt Berninger
(Aus & NZ)
In 2010, the rock band The National released their fifth album, High Violet. After ten years as critical darlings, the band was finally enjoying wider recognition. As they were about to embark on the biggest tour of their career, lead singer Matt Berninger invited his younger brother, Tom, to be a part of their tour crew. A budding filmmaker and horror movie enthusiast, Tom brought along his camera to film the experience.
MISTAKEN FOR STRANGERS follows the story of two brothers at very different moments in their lives. Approaching forty, Matt is just now beginning to experience life as a rock star. Before he is invited on tour, Tom, age 30, is still living at home in Cincinnati.
On tour, Tom struggles to keep up with his crew duties. He watches his older brother perform sold-out shows for screaming fans, and feels increasingly cut off from him. He doesn't always understand the band's success (he prefers heavy metal). He falls into bad habits, loses track of the film he is trying to make, and Matt starts to come down on him. Eventually, Tom gets fired.
After tour, Tom moves in with Matt and his wife, Carin, who put him up until he finishes the film. This proves difficult; Tom shot over 200 hours of footage. He's scattered, overwhelmed and feeling lost. The film Tom finally produces is a hilarious and touching look at two very different brothers, and an odd but strangely moving portrait of a popular, nuanced band.

The Go-Betweens: Right Here – Trailer – SFF 17
The 64th Sydney Film Festival – 7-18 June 2017
The intensely passionate, creative and fraught set of relationships that formed one of the most loved bands in Australian rock history is explored in this classy documentary.
Director Kriv Stenders (Red Dog, Australia Day, also screening at this year's festival) uncovers the people who made The Go-Betweens. Conceived in Brisbane in the late 1970s, and fronted by singer-songwriters and guitarists Robert Forster and Grant McLennan, the band recorded such resonant Australian classics as 'Streets of Your Town' and 'Cattle and Cane'. They were later joined by Lindy Morrison on drums, and Amanda Brown on violin and oboe, among others, before disbanding in 1989 and reforming in 2000. With extraordinary access, music clips, and a distinctively Queensland style, Stenders follows the band's three decades, through countless successes, failures, romances, break-ups, betrayals, triumphs and tragedies.
Festival guest: Kriv Stenders and Robert Forster
Party: After the Thursday 15 June screening is The Go-Betweens Party at The Hub, starting at 9.00 pm

POMPEII Australian Premiere: Kit Harington Interview
On Thursday (March 6) 2014, 'Game of Thrones' star Kit Harington attended the Australian Premiere for his latest film POMPEII - which was held on the edge of iconic Sydney Harbour at the Dendy Opera Quays cinema.

POMPEII is set in the days leading up to the famous eruption of Mt Vesuvius, which destroyed the ancient city of that name. When Cassia (Emily Browning) enters his world and his heart, he must also fight his feelings for her -- a noblewoman who can never be his. That is until all the world is changed by a storm of ash and lava that will seal the city like a tomb. Now they must all fight to survive.
