The Iraqi National Library stays open despite bombings in Baghdad
SHOTLIST :
1. Various exteriors of National Library
2. Interiors of library, shelves of books
3. Document waiting for restoration
4. Various set ups of head of library Saad Eskander
5. SOUNDBITE (English) Saad Eskander, Head of Iraqi National Library :
I think hundreds of bombs have exploded just in this area. Even though, we have worked every day except for a few days except, for example, last year we were not able to work only for about twenty days.
6. People working in library office
7. Various of people working in archive
8. SOUNDBITE (English) Saad Eskander, Head of Iraqi National Library :
We needed to adapt to this unusual situation by adopting several measures, for example, I hired a lot of guards to protect my staff, to protect our collections. I tried to purchase the equipment that the guard needed. So, I went to the black markets and purchased guns, ammunitions so that we would be self sufficient in terms of security. Here in Baghdad you cannot rely on the police, you cannot rely on the National Guards to protect you.
9. Zoom in of damage to library
10. SOUNDBITE (English) Saad Eskander, Head of Iraqi National Library :
In many official meetings I rejected any idea to destroy any books of Saddam (Hussein) or the Baath party. They have historical values. But you can remove the extra copies, unnecessary copies. These are important for our scholars, for Western students to study them to understand a long period, a long, black period of our history.
11. Sign reading (in Arabic) Paper (Document) Restoration Hall
12. Various of equipment in Paper (Document) Restoration Hall
13. Exterior of National Library
LEAD IN :
Despite regular bombings, kidnappings and death threats the Iraqi National Library is still open to the people of the capital Baghdad.
And, for the first time since 2003, the library is now fully accessible to the public.
STORYLINE:
The Iraqi National Library was badly damaged in the past four years since the former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein was overthrown by coalition and US forces.
But recently the structure of the three-story building has been restored, new furniture replaced what was looted after the invasion, a new IT department has been set up and some 100 young university graduates have been hired to inject new blood into the organisation.
The library also has a document and book restoration facility.
All this has taken place in the three years since Saad Eskander took over Iraq's National Library.
Since then the British-educated Kurd has had to undo the work of looters and arsonists, play detective, advise his employees on security, fight red tape and talk up his library to potential donors.
Eskander says despite everything the library has stayed open during the months and years of conflict.
The library is located in one of the city's most dangerous spots, caught between three Sunni insurgent strongholds in a part of Baghdad that's notorious for sectarian kidnappings and killings.
Hardly a week goes by without one or more of Eskander's 450-strong staff or members of their immediate families receiving a death threat, being kidnapped, killed or wounded.
Beside the five employees who have so far been killed, workers have lost nearly 70 close relatives, suffered two kidnappings and received 58 death threats. A total of 51 fled their homes as part of the sectarian cleansing taking place in Baghdad.
For the first time since 2003, the library is now fully accessible to the public.
Eskander says because of this he has taken the security of his staff upon himself hiring security guards and accessing guns and ammunition.
The area's tenuous security impacts on the number of readers who use the library. Eskander says a bad day could mean a single reader or none at all.

Creative World of Stories Ivan Goran Kovačić Public Library, Zagreb City Libraries
The video shows an activity called A Creative World of Stories, which takes place every Thursday at the children's department of Ivan Goran Kovačić Library in Zagreb. The programme started in 2017 on the occasion of the library's 60th anniversary, and it is based on reading quality picture books along with various creative activities.
A new generation of librarians wanted to encourage children and their parents by this programme to come to the library, to promote the library as an interesting place for socialising, learning and having fun as well as to encourage reading and to inspire children's creativity and imagination. The specificity of the programme is that there is no age limit for children and parents can also, if they want to, participate in the activity. The programme is remarkably accepted, the reactions of parents and children are very positive and we can say the results of the programme exceeded all our expectations.
Salt Museum Project
Historical Old Salt Museum Website Project stimulate all highly standards techniques in websites building field based on a science of cultural resources management and museums (CRM) with a concerning of the E-Marketing process (Social Media, SEO, SEF) to achieve goals in effective way.
This is the first heritage buildings online database all over the world, It contains all information that you need about any heritage buildings where ever they are. Special Gallery, Google maps, Description and specific detailed constant variables for every building like country, owner, rooms, Types of building, Getting There By and many others constants that can be different from building to building.
When I started this project, I followed many museums websites and I referred to many references to make project go though global standards. Also I do the best with merge the Heritage buildings Database, Here I will stop for a while to help you to imagine what is the purpose of this service. In all museums websites, there is an expectation visitors usually come from persons concerned about exactly this museum, people and students from the same country, and some foreign people. but if we add new service which is not find in other websites even though in UNESCO and all global organizations, then we can double or triple our visitors. Historical Old Salt Museum has a unique value in Jordan, but I think there are many heritage buildings maybe have a global unique value. Here, the special service will make the deference. It will be present our museum as one of the best museums all over the world, but this value dose not come from the heritage building value, NO, it's come from the unique service value. This and more will help As'salt in general to take it's right place between other cities in the world.
Also it allows every one to share their opinion through Museum community and advanced Comments system which integrated with this website in the way to achieve the highest rate in the E-marketing process.
This Project Presented by Ahmad (Basel) Kana'an and was built by depending on my working experiences in the education department in the Children's Museum of Jordan (CMJ). in addition to all principles and methodologies which I learned before in the B.S. degree of cultural resources management and museums in the Hashmite university.

A former national team basketball player, Hayam Essam always found strength and courage on the court. Since returning from the U.S. Department of State and espnW Global Sports Mentoring Program in 2013, she has dedicated her life to using basketball to change the lives of girls in one of Cairo's most underserved communities.
Filmed in Cairo, Egypt
Produced by the Center for Sport, Peace, & Society
Videography by Shana Vassilieva of Happy Shiver Productions
Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State's Sports Diplomacy Division
Official description:
In a heightened effort to capture how exchanges under the Empowering Women and Girls through Sports Initiative have a long-lasting impact, cooperative partners from the University of Tennessee led an on-the-ground monitoring and evaluation program in Egypt and Jordan. During this exchange, alumnae from the U.S. Department of State and espnW Global Sports Mentoring Program—Americans and emerging leaders alike—reunited overseas to gauge the progress of action plans, address challenges, and reconnect on projects initiated during the mentorship. Soccer envoys Mary Harvey and Lori Lindsey joined the activities to head up clinics and lead talks on their careers as professional female athletes. Meredith Walker, executive director of Amy Poehler's Smart Girls, served as an official envoy. In this role, she led sessions on leveraging media platforms, developing social media strategies, impactful blogging, and international journalism through the lens of women’s empowerment and sports. Through this program, the University of Tennessee conducted interviews, prepared surveys on long-term impact, and produced qualitative and quantitative evidence-of-effectiveness products and media. The overseas trip culminated in workshops and sports clinics with several generations of alumnae, connecting Sports Visitors, Sports Envoys, Mentors, & GSMP Emerging Leaders. Further, both U.S. Embassy Cairo and U.S. Embassy Amman hosted the delegations for meetings with the Ambassadors. In Jordan, the delegation worked with refugees using sports as the platform. U.S. Soccer donated a great deal of soccer equipment and balls for the young refugees.

DAR AL SARAYA MUSEUM :
The building of the museum, Dar As-Saraya, was originally a castle built by the Ottomans on the southern side of the hill in the middle of the 19th century. Its plan resembles castles and caravansaries founded by the Ottomans.
An inscription above the southern gateway is dated with the year 1304 H. (1886 AD) implying that the castle became the new Governor's House (Dar As-Saraya) after that date. With time the structure experienced many changes, prior to restoration works initiated by the Department of Antiquities in 1994.

‘A milestone for e-government’: Jordan’s successful, national, tablet-delivered e-census
The Jordanian Department of Statistics has to be the country’s safest, most secure repository of precious national information resources. That means a decision to utilize Windows 10 as the platform for its first ever digital census was only taken after it was convinced its security, stability and scalability was second to none. The decision’s proven the right one, as what was normally a two-year data gathering and analysis program was crunched down to only two months via 24,000 field agents equipped with HP tablets.
Ralph Shug Jordan and World War II presented by Leah Rawls Atkins
Before becoming a legendary football coach at Auburn University, Captain Ralph “Shug” Jordan trained and led men onto the shores of Normandy on D-Day, coming home with a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star. In this presentation, historian Leah Rawls Atkins will share nearly forgotten stories of Jordan’s heroism on the battlefields of World War II, long before he led young men to victory on the gridiron. Dr. Leah Rawls Atkins, a native of Birmingham, taught history at Auburn University, the University of Alabama at
Birmingham, and Samford University, and retired as director of the Auburn University Caroline Marshall Draughon Center for the Arts and Humanities in 1995. Her late husband, George, played football at Auburn for Coach Ralph “Shug” Jordan and was an assistant coach under his leadership for sixteen years. When she was teaching at Samford, Dr. Atkins developed a course on World War II, where she used interviews with Jordan on his experiences during the war. Atkins is co-author of Alabama: The History of a Deep South State with Wayne Flynt, William W. Rogers, and David Ward. Food for Thought 2017 is made possible by the Friends of the Alabama Archives and a grant from the Alabama
Humanities Foundation, a state program of the National Endowment for the Humanities. The public is invited to bring a
brown bag lunch. Complimentary beverages are provided. Admission to Food for Thought is always FREE. The Alabama Department of Archives and History is the state’s government records repository, special collections library and research facility, and is home to the Museum of Alabama, the state history museum. It is located in downtown Montgomery, directly across the street from the State Capitol. The Archives and Museum are open Monday through Saturday, 8:30 to 4:30. The Neighborhood’S Cemetery: Reclaiming Cemeteries Inside The City (Amman) by Tala Khaled Shelbayh
Amman’s cemeteries are suffering from being neglected, unplanned and misused. These cemeteries are facing a big problem, it become a protected area for Unethical behaviors, nonetheless, placing loads of burden on the city. Cemeteries are an essential land-use typology in every city; however, in many planning processes, they have not been carefully worked upon and been largely ignored.
International Award for Sustainable Architecture Awards 2018
First Award | Category: Landscape Planning Cemetery
Architects: Tala Shelbayh
University: Graduation Project Thesis German Jordanian University
Supervisor: Arch. Tha’er Qub’a
Country: Jordan
While city plans seek to develop an organized expansion, that serves its population, cemeteries have been left out of the growth plans. Moreover, the Government’s only solution (in Amman) was to locate cemeteries outside the city. A total of 133 small cemeteries are within the Municipality boundaries now, many of which are located within highly populated residential neighborhoods, (these old Cemeteries were at the edge of the city, but due to the population and the city’s growth, these cemeteries became a part of the city).
Nowadays in Amman, the municipality has created two huge central cemeteries ‘’Sahab and Shafa Badran‘’ , outside the City, which will eventually one day take place inside the city (as the other 133 cemetery) but with a massive problem.
The criteria that was used for selection of cemeteries are not compatible to the existing situation, and according to demand, cemeteries are scattered, unplanned, zoned and are not well designed. And are located far away from services or facilities. Landscape within the cemeteries are also neglected and not designed.
The Urban Level
Central cemeteries aren’t the solution! Cemeteries must be integrated within neighborhoods and must act as positive spaces by adding new functions that serves the living and create sense of social solidarity.
Cemetery’s added functions:
التكية01 Al-Tikyeh
* Is one of the important Traditional communal buildings that dates back to the Ottoman era. In
modern times the hospice (meaning shelter) is a place where the poor reside or travelers. It is also known as a place that people give away things for poor people and others. Most of the Takaya (plural of Tikyeh) consists of the following sections: Worship place, library, Community kitchen, Public room for public reception, and other communal spaces.
The 21st Century Tikyeh Contains the following:
Library (dead people’s books, writings, archive).
Storage (for the given things).
Community Kitchen
Multipurpose hall (for funerals and other neighborhood events).
02 The Park
Open public space for the Neighborhood.
03 Funeral House
Mosque
Space for laying out
Space for Ritual Washing
The Site: Location: Chechens cemetery, Sweileh, Amman, Jordan.
The criteria was to select an existing old cemetery inside a dense residential neighborhood, as an example for the project. The site was treated from scratch.
SONY DSC
The Architectural Level:
To design a module as burial units which will be moved under ground level while using the roof of it as public spaces that service the living needs in the neighborhood.
Another great opportunity. APR’s next award Urban Design & Architecture Design Awards 2018 is open for Registration.
