Derawar Fort is located in Cholistan Desert Near Dera Nawab, in South Punjab, it is the principal tourist attraction in the Cholistan Desert. Derawar Fort is a large square fortress in Pakistan near Bahawalpur. The forty bastions of Derawar are visible for many miles in Cholistan Desert. The walls have a circumference of 1500 meters and stand up to thirty meters high.
The first fort on the site was built by Hindu Rajput, Rai Jajja Bhati of Jaisalmer. It remained in the hands of the royal family of Jaisalmer until captured and completely rebuilt by the nawabs of Bahawalpur in 1726 to 33. In 1747, the fort slipped from the hands of the Abbasis owing to Bahawal Khan's preoccupations at Shikarpur. Nawab Mubarak Khan took the stronghold back in 1804.
The nearby marblemadelaine mosque was modeled after that in the Red Fort of Delhi. There is also a royal necropolis of the Abbasi family, which still owns the stronghold. The area is rich in archaeological artifacts associated with Ganweriwala, a vast but as-yet-unexcavated city of the Indus Valley Civilization.

#Derawar_fort is a marvel of 9th century located in #Cholistan desert of Pakistan near Ahmad Pur Sharkia in Yazman Tehsil of Bahawalpur. The fort was built by a Hindu ruler of the state of #Rajhistan during 9th century, Later it was conquered by Nawab of Bahawalpur state, Sir Sadiq Muhammad Khan during 17th century and was re-built with baked bricks. It has remained under the ownership of Nawab family for the last more than 200 years. At 40 km distance from Dera Nawab, Ahmad Pur Sharkia, this fort is still in its original shape after 13 centuries.
This fort is a cultural and national heritage of Indo-Pak region but unfortunately its condition is now worse and at the verge of collapse. Although repair work at different points inside and out is in progress under supervision and management of archaeology department however pace is too slow. A huge infrastructure inside the fort is near to collapse.
Tourists visit this fort in a large count but there is nothing in place to help generate revenue from tourists, no entry tickets etc. If redeveloped and maintained, the fort can be a good source of revenue generation and this revenue can be spent on the local population of Cholistan. Even tourists can be facilitated with a night stay if accommodation rooms in Shahi Mahallaat are repaired and maintained. Your views/comments needed below for this appeal to get heard.
Events can be arranged to create attraction like one event i know is the Cholistan jeep rally that is held every year and rally participants stay inside the fort. I don't know if they do camping or what because fort structure is not worth staying.
This Feb, I will visit during jeep rally event.
Best months to visit are from November to March to avoid scorching heat of Cholistan during summer.

Derawar Fort also called Qila Derawar is a beautiful and historical fort located 100 KM from Bahawalpur.
Derawar Fort (Urdu: قلعہ دراوڑ)is a large square fortress in Bahawalpur, Punjab, Pakistan. The forty bastions of Derawar are visible for many miles in the Cholistan Desert. The walls have a perimeter of 1500 metres and stand up to thirty metres high.
Derawar fort was built by Rai Jajja Bhatti, a Rajput ruler of the Bhatti clan. The fort was built in the 9th century AD as a tribute to Rawal Deoraj Bhatti, a Rajput sovereign king of the Jaisalmer and Bahawalpur areas who had his capital at Lodhruva. The fort was initially known as Dera Rawal, and later referred to as Dera Rawar, which with the passage of time came to be pronounced Derawar, its present name.
In the 18th century, the fort was taken over by Muslim Nawabs of Bahawalpur from the Shahotra tribe. It was later renovated by Abbasi rulers, but in 1747 the fort slipped from their hands owing to Bahawal Khan's preoccupations at Shikarpur. Nawab Mubarak Khan took the stronghold back in 1804.
This historically-significant fort presents an enormous and impressive structure in the heart of the Cholistan desert, but it is rapidly deteriorating and in need of immediate preventative measures for preservation.

ہزاروں سال کی تاریخ اپنے اندر سموئے چولستان میں موجود قلعہ دراوڑ ہمارا اہم ثقافتی ورثہ ہے. لیکن حکومت کی عدم توجہی کی بدولت یہ اہم اور قیمتی اثاثہ اپنی زبوں حالی کا منہ بولتا ثبوت ہے. صدیوں پہلے بہاولپور کے چولستان کا یہ علاقہ سر سبز و شاداب وادی پر مشتمل تھا ، اس سر سبز و شاداب وادی کو دریائے ہاکڑا سیراب کرتا تھا اسی نسبت سے اس وادی کو وادئ ہاکڑا بھی کہا جاتا تھا. لیکن آہستہ آہستہ یہ وادی صحرا میں تبدیل ہوتی چلی گئی اور دریائے ہاکڑا ریت کے نیچے معدوم ہو گیا. آبی وسائل ، چراگاہیں جگہ جگہ پھیلی آبادیاں مٹتی چلی گئیں اور انکی جگہ ریت اور ریگستان نے اپنے ڈیرے ڈال لیئے. آج اس صحرا میں ماضی کی کئی شکستہ یادیں جو اس علاقے کی یادگار ہیں ان میں تاریخی قلعہ دراوڑ شان و شوکت کے لحظ سے لازوال حیثیت کا حامل ہے. یہ قلعہ ماضی کے دریائے ہاکڑا اور وادئ ہاکڑا کی کئی لازوال داستانیں لیئے مہر بہ لب ہے. اسکی بلند و بالا فصیلوں نے وقت کے کئی نشیب و فراز ریکھے ہیں .... جنگ و جلال کے کئی منظر اور فتح و شکست کے کئی واقعات اس کے سینے میں دفن ہیں ! آج یہ عظیم قلعہ قصئہ پارینہ بن چکا ہے. اس تاریخی اور شان وشوکت سے بھر پور قلعے کو دیکھ کر ایک بھولا بھٹکا شعر یاد آگیا :
مٹی کی محبت میں ہم آشفتہ سروں نے
وہ قرض اتارے ہیں جو واجب بھی نہ تھے

Interesting History Of Fort Abbas In Bahawalpur | Why Was Pholra Fort Renamed As Fort Abbas?
Fort Abbas is a famous tehsil of Bahawalpur in South Punjab. It has great historical and strategic value since Nawab of Bahawalnagar's rule. It was initially known as Pholra but was renamed as Abbas for in 1927 by Nawab Sadiq. Muhammad Abbas was Nawab's eldest son. Fort Abbas is famous for its desert Cholistan which is surrounded by forests, deserts and agricultural areas. This is a highly fertile land but is been wasted because of a severe shortage of water. It has cultivated the land for major crops including wheat, sugarcane, and cotton cultivation. Urdu, Punjabi, Siraiki, and English are the common languages in Bahawalnagar.
