A Visit to see the Knife Angel at Derby Cathedral, Derbyshire
Artist Alfie Bradley, designed the Knife Angel made out of 100,000 knives, to raise awareness on knife crime. Knives were collected from police forces around the UK after a knife amnesty.
At 27 ft high, the British Ironworks Centre put it all together. We went to see it outside Derby Cathedral but the sculpture is travelling around the UK. A very poignant piece of art work and a must see.

Derby Cathedral.
Aerial look at Derby Cathedral
Derby from the top of the Cathedral in 1994, take a Nostalgic look at Derby 17 years ago
This is some video footage I took way back around 1994 from the top of Derby Cathedral.
Derby Cathedral is located in the City of Derby, Derbyshire, United Kingdom.
Best watched in 480p mode.
Until recently I had forgotten that I had taken this, it was on an old Hi8 analogue video tape,
The camcorder I had shot it with had gone faulty many years ago but thankfully eBay came to the rescue where I was able to buy a cheap second hand camcorder that supported playback of analogue Hi8 recordings.
Information about the old footage:
Watching this footage you forget just how much the City has changed in the last 15 years.
This was a time before The Westfield, The Quad, The Cathedral Swing Bridge, Pride Park, Cockpit island car park etc.
Do you remember The hole as it was known opposite the Council House?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Some points of interest (with time code):
0:10 The view we see here is looking towards where Joseph Right college is located today. As you can see back then it was just a triangle
of land with trees on it. Also in this view you can see Brookbridge apartments on Brook Street (then it was Rykneld Tean Mill).
Chapel Street car park with BBC radio Derby (yellow building) behind it.
0:21 At the top of the hill you can see Mackworth Water Tower.
0:27 The white building centre of screen was the Greyhound Stadium, today this facade is the entrance to Vernon Gate.
0:34 This is looking down onto Iron Gate following it down to the Corn Market.
0:55 The Corn Market
0:57 Gates at the end of the Corn Market, they took these down a few years ago.
1:00 The bottom of Babington Lane (Waterstones building)
1:03 Notice that there is no Westfield, instead its C&A.
1:05 At the end of Leopold Street ,there was an Indian Restaurant shabuj bagan that was demolished a few years ago when the Westfield was being built.
1:10 Looking down on Iron Gate
1:19 Looking towards the Assembly Rooms.
1:32 The Hole as it became known, This large area of land opposite the Council house was boarded up for many years, Today this is the site of The Quad and the memorial gardens.
1:55 On the left you can see parts of the old Bus Station.
At the top of the view you can see the glass footbridge that used to connect the Eagle Centre Market
to the bus station. You could either goto the top floor of the bus station or walk down the two ramps down to the Morledge.
1:50 As you can see there was no cockpit island car park back then, it was still cockpitt Hill car park.
2:07 Looking down on the Electricity substation next to the Industrial Museum.
2:15 Here you can seethe old St Marys Goods yard on Mansfield Road. Landau Forte College is on the right of the view.
2:26 View looking down on the junction of Queen Street, it would appear that everyone used to drive RED cars!
2:37 The old Cathedral Green before the 2008/2009 makeover.
2:58 Derby Evening Telegraph offices on Meadow Lane
3:21 The famous Derby in Bloom flower bed on Full Street.
4:40 On the left is St Peters House on Gower Street on the right is the Hippodrome Theatre, little did it know its fate in 2008!
4:46 That church on Normanton Road/Burton Road corner.

If you spot a building thats changed in my footage then please comment on it with a timecode.
Hope you enjoy this unique vision into the past of Derby.

Knife Angel. Derby Cathedral. Oct 2019
Save a Life, Surrender your Knife.
Increase The Peace, Keep Knives Off The Street.
Cowards Carry Knives.
Project Zao
---
It truly is a magnificent sculpture which, if you get the chance, to see it for yourself. The vision and workmanship is outstanding. It's incredible from any angle. The up-lighting is delightful, although I only managed to see this effect for a few moments.
---
Rachel Webb, whose son Tom was 22 years old when he was stabbed and killed in St Peter's Street, Derby, by a 16 year old boy in January 2016, has been instrumental in bringing the Angel to Derby. She supported a knife surrender held across Derbyshire and knives from this were donated towards the creation of this sculpture.
The knife Angel has been created as a National monument against violence and aggression at the British Ironworks Centre in Oswestry and is a memorial to those whose lives have been affected by knife crime. It is a 27ft high sculpture, which Alfie Bradley has designed and created single-handedly using over 100,000 knives surrendered and collected in nationwide amnesties in 2015/2016. The angel began it's tour around the UK in 2018 when it was housed outside of Liverpool Cathedral for December and January in order to raise awareness of the impact of knife crime on society, the victims and their families and friends.
It is currently on a city tour of the UK.
Knife crime is rising across the country. The Knife Angel's presence in derby is very much a symbol of the hard work of partners and communities across Derbyshire to halt this rise.
Derbyshire Police are spearheading a multi agency campaign called Project Zao, which aims to prevent causalities and stop venerable youngsters from seeing violence as the answer. It targets those who carry knives and delivers a hard hitting educational package to thousands of young people across the county.
All 43 national police forces, the Home Office, anti-violence groups across the UK and hundreds of families who have been affected by knife crime are all strongly supporting the Knife Angel. Relatives of those killed by knife crime were invited to engrave the blades with names and messages for their loved ones as part of the sculpture.
The Knife Angel is a symbol of defiance and change, shining a spotlight on Britain's knife crime problem and its impact on communities, families and individuals.
The Angel; is helping to raise awareness of violent crime and helping young people understand the reasons not to carry knives.
Please show your support and join us in standing up to knife crime!

Cathedral Quarter Hotel - Derby, United Kingdom - Video Review
Cathedral Quarter Hotel - Book it now! -
The first designer boutique hotel in the area, the hotel is a tasteful conversion of the old police station, which is supremely comfortable and elegantly sculpted into a bold, contemporary design.
Set in the center of Derby, Cathedral Quarter is positioned just off highway A52, with access to highway M1. Derby shares the best of both worlds; a vibrant, contemporary yet traditional city scene, complimented by the glorious surrounding countryside of Derbyshire and the Peak District.
It boasts 38 bedrooms, a mini spa, conference rooms, a fine dining brassiere and many other high-class features. The hotel’s outstanding location, exemplary service and sophistication perfectly compliment this stunning hotel that radiates vitality throughout the year.

It was extreamly windy on the day I filmed this so it was hard to keep the shots steady.
Because the Falcons nest on the river side of the cathedral I was not able to video from that side so was not able to show the new swing bridge and Cathedral Green.
This is some video footage I took in May 2009 from the top of Derby Cathedral.

Ella Looking At The Moon @ Derby Cathedral until 6th October 2019
THE MUSEUM OF THE MOON
From the beginning of time, the moon has acted as a cultral mirror to our beliefs, understanding and ways of seeing. It had been Interpreted over the centuries as a planet, a God and a timekeeper and calendar. Different cultures have thier own historical, social, scientific and religious relationships with the Moon and this Installation allows us to observe and contemplate these cultral similarities and differences around the world.
• Measuring 7 metres In diameter, the moon features detailed NASA imagery of the lunar surface. At an approximate scale of 1:500,000, each centimetre of the Internally lit, spherical sculpture represents 5km of the Moons surface.
• It is made from a fire-resistant, white fabric with the imagery printed onto its surface.
• To keep the moon inflated, it has a small fan embedded into its north pole which continually pumps air inside.
• Once inflated, it weighs 40kg.
• The moon has already been in the USA, China, Korea, Italy - and now in Derby until October 6th 2019. In fact, the Installations have been in more than 30 countries worldwide.
LUKE JERRAM, THE ARTIST.
• In 2006, Luke Jerram made a talking engagement ring for his girlfriend. The ring has the proposal etched on the outside which can be played back using a mini record player.
• Luke Jerram was born in 1974 and has dedicated the past 21 years as an artist, creating unique and memorable experiences. He has artworks in permanent collections in New York and London and tours worldwide.

Hey everyone! I am sorry it's taken so long for an update. Miss you all.
Cities Of Britain - Derby No. 4 (1931)
Full titles read: Cities of Britain (No. 4) - Derby. Described by His Worship the Mayor, Councillor Wm. Harold --- . (timecode obscures title.)
Derby, Derbyshire.
Various shots of the busy streets of Derby. Several shots of Derby Cathedral, the sixteenth century tower and the view from it. We also see the ancient market and the old Mayor's Parlour with timbered front. Crowds of people listen to a band playing in a park (The Arboretum ?) and watch others go boating on an artificial lake. Children fish and paddle in smaller lakes. More people wander along the banks of the River Trent.
Several shots show the railway works where steam engines are being built. More men are at work in the largest malleable casting foundry in the world. Motor cars and aeroplane parts are made in other factories - good factory shots.
