Garba bring Derby Feste alive in UK
Derby is a large city in central England, about 120 miles north of London. It is quite close to Nottingham, Leicester and Birmingham, and is home to numerous Indian families, especially from Gujarat, having settled there to work in the many industries that are situated here. On every last Saturday in the month of September, DEDA (Derby Dance) organises Derby Feste, a celebratory event, free for the public, held at numerous outdoor and indoor venues where dancers, performers, circus artistes are invited to perform and entertain. It is part of the larger DEDA objective to interest more and more young persons in dance and performance arts.
In 2015, the DEDA team visited Vadodara to experience the city’s Navaratri and the Ravana-dahan performances and to evaluate whether they can work around these to be included in the Derby Feste. They visited all the local garbas – United Way, Fine Arts, Society garbas, sheri garbas and so on and then worked with the local Derby-based Artcore Charity (which has roots in Vadodara) to plan for a large garba for Derby Feste 2017.
Fortunately, the last Saturday of September 2017 also happens to be Dussehra, so Derby Feste with the large public garba, for children between 7 and 8 pm and for adults from 8.30 pm onwards, will take place at the Market Place in Derby onSeptember 30. To prepare for this event Artcore and DEDA worked with Dr. Parul Shah, former Head of Department of Dance, M S University.
She visited Derby in July 2017 and worked for three days with DEDA dancers, teaching them all the basic garba steps. These dancers then went out in the Derby community (Schools, Colleges, associations of people from West Indies, Middle East, South-east Asians and so on) and held dance practice sessions for interested persons. The local Gujarati Samaj and Hindu Temple members have also enthusiastically joined in.
The five DEDA dancers (Isobel Davis, Rosie Pillsworth, Danni Chell, Neema Gautama-Johal, Megan Smith) were trained by Dr. Parul Shah who choreographed a short 5-minute ‘stage’ garba which would be performed before the main event. Of these dancers, one could not continue as she got stuck in the USA in the aftermath of the hurricanes. So a Vadodara garba enthusiast,
Shweta Soni (who lives and works in Derby over the last few years) stepped in and worked hard with the girls to ultimately put together a four minute piece. The Derby Feste was informally flagged off on the evening of Wednesday, September 27, with a series of dance performances, led by the garba.
So for the first time, with English weather permitting, more than 500 men, women and children, from all communities, will be dancing in garba on Dussehra day, under the open sky, to the live music and singing provided by Rajesh Majithia of Rajkot courtesy of Swar Music, Leicester.

Prayer Baton in Derby
Christians from Nottingham come to Derby bringing greetings and prayers of blessing, on the day the Olympic Torch also travels between the cities. The team from Nottingham prayed over Derby and Derbyshire. Then a 'prayer baton' containing Nottingham's prayers was passed to the Bishop of Derby, and church leaders from Derby read them out. Part of the Time to Shine: Shine as the Flame Travels initiative of More than Gold.

B.A.P.S visited Elvaston Castle, Elvaston, Derby, UK, Site of a paranormal investigation in the near future, if and when permissions are granted as the B.A.P.S team will not trespass!!
Until the 16th century the estate was held by the Shelford Priory. After the Dissolution of the Monasteries the Crown sold the priory and its estates in 1538 to Sir Michael Stanhope of Rampton, Nottinghamshire.
Sir John Stanhope (died 1611) granted the estate to his second son, also Sir John Stanhope (d .1638), High Sheriff of Derbyshire, in 1629.
The manor house was built for the latter Sir John in 1633. This Elizabethan style house was redesigned and extended in a grand Gothic Revival style by James Wyatt in the early 19th century for the Charles Stanhope, 3rd Earl of Harrington. Wyatt designed a new wing, a new great hall, and most of the interiors of the castle, but died before work was completed. His designs were carried out by Robert Walker between 1815 and 1829.
The castle has been neglected and has fallen into disrepair; due to its condition, the building is not open to the public, and since 2008 has been listed on the Buildings at Risk Register. Derbyshire County Council estimates the castle and estate requires £6.42million in 'Essential Repairs.

LARA CROFT WAY in Derby (BBC NEWS)
A road named after the heroine of the Tomb Raider video games has opened in Derby.
Lara Croft Way is part of the city's new £36.2m inner ring road system designed to improve traffic flow.
The name was chosen from a shortlist by public vote, with 89% of those polled opting for the character devised by Derby-based game studio Core Design.
Another stretch of the network will be named Mercian Way after the local army regiment.
The ring road is part of the Connecting Derby scheme, a long-term project to improve transport links in the area.
Councillor Matthew Holmes, cabinet member for planning and environment, said: The opening of Lara Croft Way signifies another major milestone of the Connecting Derby scheme which is fast approaching completion after many years of hard work by a great number of terrific individuals.
Derby is proud of its place in a vibrant creative industry and Lara Croft Way is fantastic way to celebrate that.
The completion of Lara Croft Way will allow drivers to access Burton Road, Babington Lane and Normanton Road via the new roundabout at the junction of Burton Road and Normanton Road.
The Inner Ring Road project is due to be fully completed at the start of 2011.
