Included in the launch were the new Seashore Nature Trail, the 2016 ‘Discover Derrynane’ family activity weekend, a new website for Derrynane House and the consultation process for the Draft Derrynane Conservation Management Plan.
Speaking at Derrynane, Minister Canney said: “I am delighted to be here in Derrynane, launching these very exciting initiatives for the House and the Park. Derrynane House and Park is a unique and historic site and the new Seashore Nature Trail, which has been completely updated with new information, technology and site characteristics, is a wonderful resource to help visitors learn about its unique environment”.
Derrynane House is the ancestral home of Daniel O'Connell and the house is now a museum dedicated to the life of Daniel O'Connell and his great achievements. Recent improvement works to the House include a new Visitor and Reception entrance, the installation of a lift together with accessibility works in the courtyard and a redesign of the exhibition spaces with improved graphics and signage.
Minister Canney encouraged observations on the Draft Conservation Management Plan saying “My Office, the Office of Public Works, has an important conservation remit to maintain built heritage in State Care and I would encourage all those interested in the essence and cultural significance of Derrynane to submit their observations on our new website”.
Welcoming the 2016 ‘Discover Derrynane’ weekend Minister Canney concluded “Derrynane is a Discovery Point on the hugely successful Wild Atlantic Way and the range of activities and events planned here this weekend, in partnership with organisations such as the National Biodiversity Data Centre, the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group, eTrek, Seasynergy and the National Parks and Wildlife Service, demonstrates the importance my Office places on community, heritage and educational initiatives and I have no doubt the weekend will be enjoyed by all”.

Derrynane Abbey in the background
Derrynane Abbey now in ruins, is on an island appropriately named Abbey Island. It is believed to have been built in the 6th century. Derrynane Abbey must be one of the most beautiful possible locations for a graveyard. It looks out onto the Atlantic ocean and can only be accessed when the tide is out. Coffins are shouldered across the beach onto the burial ground on the Abbey.
The village of Caherdaniel gets its name from the old stone fort “ stone fort of caher” or Caherdaniel Fort which can be found just north of the village. The fort is typical of the many stone forts found in South Kerry. Staigue Fort, located just a few miles beyond Caherdaniel, is by far the most impressive of the stone forts on the peninsula.
Derrynane was also home to the famous Irishman Daniel O’Connell. While O’ Connell was born close by in Cahirciveen he resided for most of his life in Derrynane house. The house is now a museum.

The Kerry Way, Ireland: From Sneem to Caherdaniel, Ireland
A pre-arranged taxi picked us and baggage up at Rockville House B&B in Sneem to shorten the day's hike. He drove us around 5 kilometers/3.1 miles down the road to where it intersected with the Kerry Way trail and continued on to Caherdaniel to drop baggage at Moran's Farmhouse in Bunavalla for tonight's stay.
Hikers can arrange for self-guided and guided tours of the Kerry Way where baggage is transported between accommodations or opt to be a Freedom Walker (aka backpacker) and carry everything along the trail.
Distances are long each day (too long for us) and removing 5 kilometers still left another 11 kilometers/6.8 miles to travel; up and over stiles through fields filled with the cutest little newborn Black-faced sheep; rugged hills and muddy trails; until we came to Caherdaniel. A glass of wine and yummy lunch in the Blind Piper Pub next to a roaring fire hit the spot.
