A Visit to Derwent Pencil Museum. Keswick.
We took a visit to the Derwent Pencil Museum in Keswick.
'The Secret Pencil' Derwent Pencil Museum, Lake District Keswick
In the early 1940's, a secret branch of British Intelligence (MI6) approached the Derwent Pencil Company to create a special 'escape pencil' for pilots who were shot down in World War 2. The Pencil held a micro compass, and a map of escape routes through occupied Europe so pilots could get back to safety and evade capture. We are lucky enough to have one each - Dad and I.

A little history of a pencil. Lovely little place and dog friendly as well as mobility friendly...no steps and also great toilet for mobility. Sad to see the fall of industry. Great selection in shop and friendly staff.

National Wonders: The Derwent Pencil Museum
Our first National Wonders trip of 2019 has bought us to Keswick in the stunning Lake District. While this might make you think of poets, great lakes and mountain climbing, did you know that Keswick is also the birthplace of the first ever pencil? Neither did we, but the Derwent Pencil museum is a celebration of all things graphite based and actually makes a fun and affordable family day out.
ABANDONED PENCIL MUSEUM KESWICK CUMBRIA

World’s Largest Colored Pencil at World’s Only Pencil Museum!
Today we went to an attraction that sounded so ridiculous it might be good: The Derwent Pencil Museum. And actually, we really liked it! Highlights included the diamond-encrusted pencil, the WWII secret agent spy pencil with map and compass, and the world’s largest colored pencil (as you can see in the title)! The little quiz sheet they give you forces you to interact with the whole exhibit and learn a lot about pencils in the process. Then we had our WORST lunch in the UK and relocated to another town in the Lake District, Ambleside.

I had a great time being shown around the Pencil Museum, the staff there were wonderful and incredibly helpful, I appreciate them letting me knock around there with my camera.
I just clicked the link to find if it was working and learned something new! This museum is home to the worlds first pencil! Had I known that at the time I'd have asked to see it and not sat on my butt drawing for an hour!
A big thank you goes out to Lara who agreed to be on camera and talk to us about the history of pencils! I actually learned a lot from what she said, so I suggest you give it a watch!
Love that sweet blues track during the montage? It's one of mine, called 'Lonely' and you can listen to it right now!
Anyway, it's time for me to go. I've got to teach the Keyboard player how to use Ableton Live for the Album Launch Party.... Hey I could promote it here:
Right, got to go. Can't sit talking to you all day. But if you leave a comment I'll make sure I reply post haste.
Love
Tom
