There is an overall 4 mile multi-user route starting and finishing at Swalwell Visitor Centre and this video shows the first part from the Visitor Centre to Winlaton Mill Car Park. Most of this section is on tarmac with relatively gentle gradients.

Bridge over the River Derwent at Allensford

The River Derwent is a river on the border between County Durham and Northumberland and this films shows the bridge at Allensford over the river. It broadens into the Derwent Reservoir, west of Consett. The Derwent is a tributary of the River Tyne, which it joins near the MetroCentre. The river flows for 55 km from its origin, where two streams meet approximately 1.5km west of Blanchland, to Derwenthaugh where it flows into the River Tyne. After Allensford the river flows to Shotley Bridge, Blackhall Mill and Rowlands Gill.

The name Derwent comes from the Brythonic/Early Welsh word for oak derw, harking back to the time when the Derwent Valley was inhabited by a British-speaking population.

That is not to say that the other countries are forgotten, they are not, but obviously there is less going on. However the fact that there are so many travel related films here is not from holidays but from business trips attending trade fairs around the region. Every packaging trade fair is a new excuse to make another film!

derwent haugh otters part 1

Otters larking about on a pontoon.
This otter was filmed on a pontoon in Blaydon, on the River Tyne. This footage is all taken by a camera set up on the far end of the pontoon while part 2 of the video shows otters using the other end as well. The prominent otter in the footage is a large male. Where you can see his fur close up, old scars are really noticeable - most probably from wounds inflicted from fighting other male otters for dominance. The otters spend a lot of time on this pontoon, scent marking and sprainting - from the amount of spraint I found on the camera, this has become their favourite object to mark!

After taking the mountain bikes to Team Valley, Tanfield Railway and through Burnopfield to Rowlands Gill, I decided to get the camera out on the safety of Derwent Walk
