About the Road to Milford Sound (Milford Sound from Knobs Flat):
On the final stage of the ride to Milford Sound, you venture deep into the rainforest of New Zealand and one of the wettest areas in the world, the Fiordland National Park. Tourist from all over the world flock to this amazing area. And no wonder, the views will take your breath away. This is like riding in the movie set of the Lord of the Rings. You climb more than 1000 meters / 3281 feet in this stage, so it is more demanding than the first stage. You will pass two beautiful lakes (Lake Gunn and Lake Fergus) on your climb up to ‘the divide’. This is the first ‘real’ climb on this route. After a nice descent you start to climb up again towards ‘Monkey Creek’. You will have a few great valley views on your way. With 14.8 miles / 23.8 kilometers remaining you get to Monkey Creek and a jaw-dropping scenery. Now you are deep into the wilderness of New Zealand. Waterfalls tumble down the majestic walls which surround the road. This is truly an epic segment. Surrounded by this amazing scenery you climb up towards the Homer tunnel. You descent 1.2 kilometers through the dark tunnel. At the end of the tunnel you are welcomed amazing views of Cleddau Valley. This is one impressive descent with granite mountainsides, skirted by native forest lower down, altogether forming an awe-inspiring landscape. As you get to the ‘Flame Rouge’ of the route you start to see the towering peaks of Milford Sound. The last kilometer is one of the highlights of this route. The ride ends up right in front of Milford Sound, so make sure to brake before you end up in the water.

Adding music to the ride:
Most cyclists would agree that the ride to Col du Tourmalet is awesome. But when it comes to music opinions are very mixed. This is why we do not add music to our rides. We simply do not want to spoil your ride with music you do not like. But it is quite simple to add it yourself. Open an extra browser tab. Find a site that offers music (Spotify, YouTube, etc…) and pick the music you like and enjoy the ride...
Flight from Queenstown to Milford Sound, NZ
Early June 2014 I flew from Queenstown to Milford Sound, New Zealand, in a Cessna 172R
It was a late afternoon flight, with us being the last aircraft to leave Milford Sound in order to make it back in time with the curfew at Queenstown Airport.
Milford Sound is definitely the MOST beautiful place I have ever flown into and this video gives you a taste of what it is like

Descending in to Milford Sound, New Zealand.
Descending into Milford Sound on the south island of New Zealand. One of the most amazing places I've had chance to visit. Fjord land at its best.
From the Homer tunnel down to the mouth of the Sound. Lovely.

Milford Sound Scuba Diving - New Zealand
Scuba Diving in New Zealand's Milford Sound. This place is considered one of the 8th wonders of the world. The water was cold but rich with sea life. The snow melts from the surrounding peaks, creating a fresh water layer that sits atop the salt water from the ocean. The fresh water is stained with tannins from the rainforests and creates a dark layer where less light penetrates creating a unique deep water diving environment.
Dolphin Encounter in Milford Sound, New Zealand
I work as a nature guide at the Milford Discovery Center and Underwater Observatory in Milford Sound, New Zealand. This area of the fjord is a marine reserve and bottle nose dolphins often come to visit us in Harrison Cove. On a sunny morning in early November, my team mates and I were visited by a pod of about 20 of these beautiful creatures. This is by far one of the move incredible encounters I've ever had with marine mammals and I'm so excited I caught it on my camera so I could share it with you.
