Granma, Cuba
While many destinations vie for the distinction, Granma Province, in Cuba’s southeastern region, is one of the island’s most historically significant. It also boasts an inviting capital, Bayamo, and natural wonders including a volcanic beach.

SUMMARY
=======
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Sites are places of importance to cultural or natural heritage as described in the UNESCO World Heritage Convention, established in 1972. The Caribbean island-nation of Cuba accepted the convention on March 24, 1981, making its historical sites eligible for inclusion on the list; as of 2011, nine sites in Cuba are included.Cuba had its first site included on the list at the 6th Session of World Heritage Committee, held at UNESCO headquarters in Paris, France, in December 1982. At that session, Old Havana and its Fortifications, a site including the central, historic portion of the Cuban capital of Havana, as well as Spanish colonial fortifications, was inscribed on the list.Cuba's inclusions on the list include a variety of sites. Two sites are selected for their natural significance: Alejandro de Humboldt National Park in the eastern provinces of Holguín and Guantánamo, and Desembarco del Granma National Park, named for the yacht which carried the members of the 26th of July Movement who started the Cuban Revolution. City landscapes include Old Havana, Trinidad, and Camagüey, all founded by early Spanish colonists in the 16th century. The sites also include historical agricultural regions, including the coffee plantations of southeastern Cuba, and the tobacco region of Viñales Valley.

Attractions in Cuba That Will take Your Breath Away
Jack Guy
Visitors to Cuba will be blown away by the buzz of life in the big cities like Havana and Santiago, but there are so many natural attractions that you should make time to see. Here are some of the stunning natural wonders that will take your breath away.
Maria la Gorda
The westernmost point in Cuba is best known for its amazing diving. It’s a tough place to get to due to a lack of public transport, but make the effort and you’ll be rewarded with well-preserved reefs and a laid-back diving camp.
Guanahacabibes Peninsula
If you’re not much of a diver, it’s still worth a trip to the Guanahacabibes Peninsula, where Maria la Gorda is situated. It’s a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in its own right, with sea turtle nesting sites, mangrove swamps, and dense forests. It’s one of the most isolated areas of Cuba, as the nearest large population centre is found more than two hours away.
Viñales valley
A popular stop on the tourist trail, and with good reason. Get out of the town centre and explore on horseback, by bike, or hike some of the many trails. You can also go bird watching and rock climbing in the area.
Alejandro de Humboldt National Park
Over in eastern Cuba lies this spectacular park which is known as the best-conserved area of forested mountain ecosystems in the Caribbean. You can organise tours of the park in Holguín.
Cienaga de Zapata National Park
This national park occupies an entire peninsula on the south coast of the island. It’s home to swamps, mangroves and wetlands where you can spot flamingos, crocodiles and many other species.
Cayo Coco
Cuba has some fabulous beaches, and Varadero is the most well-known. However, make the journey to Cayo Coco and you’ll have unspoilt stretches of sand to yourself. As an extra claim to fame, the beaches were featured in two Ernest Hemingway novels.
Topes de Collantes nature reserve
Escape from the tourist crowds of Trinidad and visit the pine-covered mountains of the Topes de Collantes natural park. It’s just outside the city in the Sierra del Escambray, and there are some good trails and waterfalls to explore.
Las Terrazas
This planned tourism project isn’t as wild as some of the other attractions on this list, but it’s close to Havana and a great place to spend a day or two. Hike the trails, fly down zip lines, and dive into the swimming holes.
Sierra Maestra
It’s the highest and longest mountain range in Cuba, and it’s also famous as the hideout of the Castro brothers and their revolutionaries during the 1950s. Head to the southern areas to see how the mountains sit almost on the coastline.
Baracoa
Another one for beach lovers. It’s known as the first settlement in Cuba, and there is a flat-topped mountain called El Yunque that has been designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. It’s also close to the Alejandro de Humboldt National Park.
Desembarco del Granma National Park
Named to commemmorate the landing of the Castro revolutionaries in a yacht called the Granma, this coastal park is home to amazing cliffs and waterfalls. There are reefs and mangroves to explore, and the rest of the park boasts a strange terraced topography thanks to limestone formations.

TODAY IN HISTORY - National Days of Cuba, Haiti, and Sudan - 1 Jan 2011
Today, January 1, is the National Day of Cuba, Haiti, and Sudan. The largest of the Caribbean islands, Cuba is home to thousands of flowering plant species. In addition, the very rare cork palms are endemic to the country. They are called living fossils as they represent the cycads genus, believed to have existed for over 100 million years. Among Cuba's protected areas are the Alejandro de Humboldt and Desembarco del Granma National Parks, both of which are United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Sites. Situated southeast of Cuba is Haiti, a country known for its courageous and strong people. It is Latin America's first sovereign nation and today observes its independence attained in 1804. The nation's name comes from the indigenous Taino Arawak word, Ayti, which means mountainous land. Sudan, in Northern Africa south of Egypt, commemorates its autonomy gained in 1956. The Archaeological Sites of the island of Meroe has remains of pyramids, temples, and domestic buildings as well as facilities related to water management. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site as its Sudan's Gebel Barkal and the Sites of the Napatan Region.
May the kind people of Cuba, Haiti, and Sudan have memorable National Days.
Today is also New Year's Day, joyfully celebrated by people in numerous countries around the globe. During this auspicious time, many welcome the coming year with enthusiasm and wishes of goodness. May 2012 be a year in which we can all rejoice on a vegan planet forever filled with peace and love.
Now, let's hear about 2011 in review with news highlights from The Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association.
