A story about the Old Woman Meteorite and the spirit of discovery
Presented by Land Ops ARC
Produced by C.E. Brandcast
This is a story about the Old Woman Meteorite and the spirit of discovery. This was the second largest meteorite to be found in the United States and several mysteries surround the discovery including how such a large three ton space rock ended up in the California desert with no impact crater.
This was a massive shooting star at one time, perhaps 10,000 years ago. It was discovered in 1976 by two prospector while they were searching for the lost arch gold mine. Their search for gold yielded a much greater discovery yet with no compensation.
The original written story of the meteorite has a dark cloud over it due to the legal battle over the rights. Land Ops has decided to tell the story from the adventure perspective and the spirit of discovery. The meteorite can be viewed at the Desert Discovery Center in Barstow, California.
What is Land Ops?
Land Ops is a unique adventure radio club that combines off road exploration with navigation challenges and radio communications. Our expedition style events and trips are not a competition, but rather, focus on teamwork exercises that seek and find things which are lost or hidden.
Officially Land Ops ARC is an amateur radio club (club call KM6HJV). The club used VHF radios and repeaters as well as APRS digipeaters to conduct the research and report for the documentary.
Discover why the name Lucky Nugget is used in this perspective. Watch the video and be sure to give us a thumbs up. Don’t forget to subscribe to the Land Ops channel for more interesting content.
The Second Largest Iron Meteorite Found in USA
New Version Higher Resolution Updated Video of this Meteorite Published This Year
California Largest Meteorite Also U.S. Second Largest:
This is the second largest iron meteorite found in USA. Found in 1975 in the Old Woman Mountains in Southern Ca. ,USA. In Mar.1978 the O.W. meteorite went to the Smithsonian Institute for analysis & cutting. The Smithsonian Institute sliced a 427kg piece from the bottom of the Iron meteorite. I've seen this slice at the Smithsonian of the OLD WOMAN METEORITE I was not to impressed. it's a nice piece of that type of Iron meteorite but not as impressive as this main mass at the Desert Discovery Center in Barstow, Ca.USA.

Macabre Discovery in the Heart of the Mojave
Bagdad is a remote Mojave Desert ghost town on Route 66, west of Amboy and east of Ludlow, California.
Nothing remains of the original town except a forlorn cemetery where at least 17 people are buried. No one knows exactly who is buried here because the records were destroyed in a fire.
We were recently horrified and saddened to discover the cemetery had been disturbed when we found signs of grave robbing and vandalism.
Bagdad Cemetery sits on Bureau of Land Management property. The cemetery is public, and belongs to us all. We encourage others to contact us in a collective effort to preserve this historic cemetery before it is lost forever to the hands of the depraved.
The Bureau of Land Management at the Needles Office has been notified and they will be taking positive steps to ensure the preservation of the cemetery. Thank you, Chris and Paul.

SUMMARY
=======
The Mojave Desert ( mo-HAH-vee) is an arid rain-shadow desert and the driest desert in North America. It is in the southwestern United States, primarily within southeastern California and southern Nevada, and it occupies 47,877 sq mi (124,000 km2). Very small areas also extend into Utah and Arizona. Its boundaries are generally noted by the presence of Joshua trees, which are native only to the Mojave Desert and are considered an indicator species, and it is believed to support an additional 1,750 to 2,000 species of plants. The central part of the desert is sparsely populated, while its peripheries support large communities such as Las Vegas, Barstow, Lancaster, Palmdale, Victorville, and St. George.
The Mojave Desert is bordered by the Great Basin Desert to its north and the Sonoran Desert to its south and east. Topographical boundaries include the Tehachapi Mountains to the west, and the San Gabriel Mountains and San Bernardino Mountains to the south. The mountain boundaries are distinct because they are outlined by the two largest faults in California – the San Andreas and Garlock faults. The Mojave Desert displays typical basin and range topography. Higher elevations above 2,000 ft (610 m)) in the Mojave are commonly referred to as the High Desert; however, Death Valley is the lowest elevation in North America at 280 ft (85 m) below sea level and is one of the Mojave Desert's more notorious places. The Mojave Desert occupies less than 50,000 sq mi (130,000 km2), making it the smallest of the North American deserts. The Mojave Desert is often referred to as the high desert, in contrast to the low desert, the Sonoran Desert to the south. However, the Mojave Desert is generally lower than the Great Basin Desert to the north. The spelling Mojave originates from the Spanish language while the spelling Mohave comes from modern English. Both are used today, although the Mojave Tribal Nation officially uses the spelling Mojave; the word is a shortened form of Hamakhaave, their endonym in their native language, which means 'beside the water'.
GOING ALONE - Bagdad is dead
For over three years I've been watching a ghost town breathe it's last. Bagdad, in the eastern Mojave Desert, once boasted a railroad depot, a two-story Harvey House restaurant and hotel, a school, a water pumping station, a post office, gas and service stations, bars, restaurants and a number of warehouses for railroad equipment. The town even had a church and a cemetery. In fact, in 1910 Bagdad was the largest town along Route 66 between Barstow and Needles. Today, all that remains are seventeen forgotten graves (three of which have been dug up by grave robbers) and a lone Salt Cedar tree. For over three years I've been visiting Bagdad an average of once a month during my bi-weekly trips to the desert. And for three years I've puzzled my mind over a mystery here.
A pervasive question that has haunted my visits to Bagdad has been the fact that someone else besides me had been also coming regularly to the ghost town, and at least as often as I, as evidenced by the crisp and clean rake marks in the dirt which I could always find around the tree, and among the graves. In my mind I pictured some very old man or woman, possibly someone who grew up here as a child, and perhaps who now lives in Barstow or Needles, and who comes to Bagdad regularly to tend to the memories of this place; to keep the ghosts company, and to rake the desert dirt into some semblance of a remembered touch of civilization now almost utterly forgotten here after decades being abandoned. Seeing the rake marks always made me wonder about who the raker was, and the story behind their clear and sentimental purpose. I sometimes wondered if I'd just missed the person by an hour or so, as the rake marks in the dust looked so fresh at times. Would I ever meet this person? Could I ever know their story? I left some signs of my passing, hoping for a response, but none ever came. It really was as if some disinterested ghost applied themselves to this single-minded task, invisible, and forgotten.
Now the rake marks are gone. It's been six months since they were last refreshed, and now there's not even a trace of the marks at either the tree or the graves. I suspect that the man or woman - or ghost - who once loved this remembered place may now be gone as well. Bagdad ghost town may at last truly be dead.
