3. SOUNDBITE: (English) Dave Clifton, Dive Master:
We had a predictable boost in tourism for about two or three weeks. Some of the dive sites here were very crowded, lots of people. It was great for the industry around here, great for the businesses, the restaurants and things like that, but for some of the dive masters who are used to it being a lot quieter it was a bit of a shock.

6. SOUNDBITE: (English) Lotta Ericson, Freediver:
This area doesn't have sharks, you're very lucky if you see a shark here. Most people get very exited to see a shark here and none of my students or anybody I know who comes freediving here have had any concern about sharks, ever.

13. SOUNDBITE: (English) Jacques de Vos, Diving Instructor:
Well, in the last few months free diving in general, globally, has picked up quite a bit and it's a lot to do with current trends in what young people are looking for. But in Dahab there's a massive freediving community, people come here exclusively to come and freedive.

15. SOUNDBITE: (English) Mohamed Madany, Diving Instructor:
We should not kill sharks. If there's a change of the behaviour that means it's because of the human impact first of all before any other thing, that's it. And if you see a shark you are lucky.

17. SOUNDBITE: (English) Lotta Ericson, Freediver:
It's become a more and more accepted sport. When I started 9 or 10 years ago most people thought you were a freak, if you want to freedive you have some kind of death wish because you wanted to go deep. Now completely normal snorkellers or scuba divers or just somebody on the beach thinks that looks cool. I want to try and they come and try. It doesn't seem like people think you have to be crazy and have a death wish to become a freediver anymore - which is very good thing.

21. SOUNDBITE: (English) Lotta Ericson, Freediver:
The Blue Hole is one of the best free diving spots close to Europe. So it's very popular with free divers coming everywhere from Europe because you get 90 metres (295 feet) of depth straight off shore. You don't have to take a boat or anything, there is no currents, no thermal climbs, clear blue water, nice restaurants. It's because of that, that Dahab has become like a freediving Mecca.
22. Various shots of free divers
LEAD IN:
But not all of the freediving community at the spectacular Blue Hole, Dahab spot consider the sharks a threat.

Diving Dahab in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula
Check out the abundant and colorful marine life off the coast of Egypt's Sinai Peninsula.
I actually had a freaky equipment malfunction while diving here. Read all about it:
Legend has it that Dahab's Blue Hole is one of the most deadly dive sites in the world.
Red Sea Scuba Diving Dahab Egypt - Diving the Blue Hole El-Bells
We traveled to Egypt to dive the Red Sea, starting with the world famous Blue hole before heading off on a live aboard adventure. Unfortunately our dive at the Canyon wasn't recorded as my battery ran down overnight and I didn't test it.
We stayed at Daniela Hotel and Resort. The rooms are nothing to write home about, but it has a unique relaxed vibe and a very personal experience as it is not too crowded. The house reef is amazing right in front of the hotel and we felt like the staff were friends by the time we left. We had no complaints with the food and the Dive centre is part of the hotel. The only downside is that you are not walking distance from town so need to take a taxi in and out.
The water was beautiful and warm, 32 degrees. The blue hole is a bucket list dive but to be honest I'm not sure it's worth the extra park fees and pushing through all the snorkeler day visitors making entry and exit quite an event. Canyon, the first site we dived and located right in front of the place we made our base was probably a nicer dive and you can chill in the shade and order food between dives. I would also highly recommend doing a dive or night dive at the house reef of Daniela Hotel, the corals are still in great condition as very few day visitors trample it.
The desert barbecue we attended was nice but we were exhausted from traveling and left to early as the party and entertainment and local youth started streaming in for the start of the action.

Head out on full day safari from Dahab to feel the taste of the beauty of the desert of Sinai with its sand dunes and mountains. Walk through the canyon, visit Safra sand dunes, have a lunch in the desert with refreshing Bedouin tea and much more.Itinerary , Take part in a fun excursion while you are on holiday. Spend some time outside of Dahab on full day excursion that takes you inside the Sinai Desert. You will be picked up from your hotel in Dahab at 08.00am in the morning and drive to the desert.Start your excursion with a walk through Arcada Canyon. After this you will have a lunch with Bedouin tea in the desert. Then you drive to the amazing Safra Sand Dunes to take in the real desert atmosphere, where you can play, chill whatever you feel like doing. Finally, we visit to Gebel Makhroum (the Mountain with a Hole).Dahab is now considered to be one of Sinai's most treasured diving destinations. Following the Six-Day War, Sinai was occupied by Israel and Dahab became known as Di-Zahav (Hebrew: די זהב), after a place mentioned in the Bible as one of the stations for the Israelite during the Exodus from Egypt. The Sinai Peninsula was restored to Egyptian rule under the Egypt–Israel Peace Treaty in 1982.The arrival of international hotel chains and the establishment of other ancillary facilities has since made the town a popular destination with tourists. Dahab is served by Sharm el-Sheikh International Airport. Masbat (within Dahab) is a popular diving destination, and there are many (50+) dive centers located within Dahab. Most of Dahab's diving spots are shore dives. The city of Dahab is a popular tourist destination in south Sinai. It is considered to be the second most famous city in Sinai, after the world wide popular city of Sharm El Sheikh, Dahab means gold, and the city was named that because of its golden sand beaches. In the past, Dahab was only a small fishing town until the Egyptian government gave it more importance in the late 1990s and built a number of resorts and hotels there. The Egyptian government added a lot of services and facilities in different sections of the city to increase the number of the tourists who visit Dahab and it has certainly paid off.Dahab is famous for its golden sand beaches, from which it took its name. This is besides its fascinating diving spots, as diving is the most popular activity to do in Dahab. The city is alsofamous for being the cheapest diving resort in Sinai in comparison to other resorts like Sharm El Sheikh and Ras Suder.
