Canadian Vineyards and Wines
While visiting the Okanagan this past week I thought I'd put together a video about the wine industry in our country: what goes into a healthy vine, what makes ice wine so special, and why grafting is so important in North America. The video clips were taken at wineries from Osoyoos to Naramata and the happy pooch at the end in Ali from Desert Hill Winery.

WINE-ing in the Okanagan: Must-see wineries
Why go to Napa or Napoli when we have a beautiful wine region right in our backyard!? A 4-hour roadtrip or a 1-hour flight and you’re surrounded by beautiful vineyards, lakes and impressive wines. The weather will almost always guarantee to impress. BC wines have been on the up and up and have been proving themselves in the world as having diversity. The unique environment of water, weather and sunlight have put BC wines, such as Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Rieslings on the map. We did all the hard work of driving around and tasting all the wine for you and these are our MUST-SEE wineries of the Okanagan. Check out our tour and where to stop in to sleep and eat.
Liquidity Wines
OK Falls
Liquidity isn’t only a winery, it’s an experience. From the changing artwork, to changing bistro menu that boasts fresh and simple food, to of course the wines (we can’t get enough of the Chardonnay!) and the incredible views of Skaha Lake. They will make you feel warm and welcome from the moment you walk through the glass doors. Check in to see Artist Lecture Series monthly.
Stoneboat Vineyards
Oliver
A truly family-run vineyard – from 15 acres to 50! The Martiniuk’s left the craziness of Vancouver and headed out east to open a winery (isn’t that everyone’s dream?) It was a good move, because the Black Sage Bench offers minerals in the ground, unlike any other area – which makes the wine unique and flavorful. Their Pinot Noir is definitely unlike any other and keeps us coming back for more.
Spirit Ridge at Nk’Mip Resort
Osoyoos
After a long day of travel and drinking wine, book a stay at Spirit Ridge - our very own desert right here in BC. Guest suites, vineyard, golf course, fine dining, spa, sparkling pools, it’s luxury at its finest. Nk’Mip Cellars not only has award-winning wines, it’s the FIRST Aboriginal-owned and operated winery. The spa is full-service and offers hot-stone massages (great after that long drive). Enjoy alfresco dinner at Mica, overlooking the desert and lake. Fresh, aboriginal-style cuisine is unique and delicious. Then bedtime in a comfy suite, cozied by a fireplace.
The Jammery
Kelowna
Start the day of right (bring your appetite) at the best breakfast spot in the Okanagan. The Jammery is world-renowned for their in-house made jams in all different flavors. We have a thing for the Amaretto Blueberry. After watching them make jams through the viewing window, sit down and get ready for some of the largest plates of waffles, eggs benny and sandwiches you’ve ever seen!
50th Parallel
Lake Country
International award-winning wines, bumping music and fun vibes, this is #1 on our list of best wineries and soon-to-be destination resort. Run by a power-couple who slaved over the land themselves to build what has become one of the Okanagan’s most impressive spots from the architecture and views, to the vineyards and the hospitality. They offer tours of the property and education of their processes, that end with a tasting that will blow your mind.
8th Generation
Summerland
Passed down through 8 generations of Schales’ boys (hence the name). The first Schales grape was planted in 1783 – that’s some experience unlike anyone else! They have one of the oldest tasting rooms in the Okanagan that’s a restored farmhouse from the 1940's. It's also one of the only wine shops that ACTUALLY faces the vineyard, which means breath taking views while you sip on their crisp and clean wines.
Our fav: INTEGRITY (but you should try them all)
Dirty Laundry
Summerland
The only thing better than Dirty Laundry’s Bordello wine (which is virtually impossible to beat), is the story that it actually WAS a bordello. The story goes that a immigrant worker named Sam, quit his job and opened a laundromat. He realized soon after that his customers had needs for other things, like drinks and gambling .and women. Dirty (upstairs) Laundry (downstairs) was born. The original location still stands and they play up on the story, but now surrounded by beautiful vineyards and makes delicious, award-winning wines, making it one of the most fun wineries ever. You can order a picnic and sit on the patio and watch the steam engine go by.
Part 1: Phantom Creek Estates - Oliver
At the northern edge of the Sonoran desert, in Canada's western-most province, British Columbia, a new winery is emerging on a bench made historic by being the site of the first Bordeaux varietal vineyards in the region.
The Phantom Creek Estates team has set the bar high for themselves and seem willing to do the hard work to reach it. They have also adopted the term Next World which Anthony Gismondi coined a few years ago to counter the notion that any region outside of Europe is New World, a term which comes with a built-in comparison and inferiority complex to Old World wines. Next World, is the next step. It's wineries using global knowledge in the best way possible to make great wines that express place.
Phantom Creek has the assets to give them a great start in this direction. The vineyards they have acquired have been consistently recognized as producing some of the best red wine in Canada since they were planted in the early 90s. The team is lead by Ingo Grady, a successful veteran of the British Columbian wine establishment and they have significant funding from the Bai family.
They are also working with Alsace giant, Olivier Humbrecht to convert their vineyards to biodynamic and organic farming and, more significantly, he will make some white wines for them.

The Beautiful Tinhorn Creek Vineyard
On a hillside overlooking vineyards, sagebrush, and the old gold mining creek that is its namesake, Tinhorn Creek Vineyards has been owned and operated by the Shaunessy and Oldfield families since 1993. The winery is located south of Oliver, BC, at the junction of Highway 97 and Road 7 in the famed Golden Mile wine-growing district. This area, named for its rich history of farming that dates back to the early 1900s, is home to several quality wine producers. Tinhorn Creek sources fruit exclusively from its own vineyards: 150 acres of prime land on two very distinct benches. This land lends to the creation of terroir-driven wines that are classic illustrations of the place they are grown. The 100-acre Diamondback Vineyard on the Black Sage Bench is planted with a mix of red and white varieties, primarily Pinot Gris, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The 50-acre Tinhorn Creek Vineyard on the Golden Mile Bench is also planted with a mix of red and white grapes, but primarily features Gewürztraminer.
Farming their own vineyards using sustainable practices allows Tinhorn Creek full control over the quality of fruit delivered to the crush pad for each vintage. The winery produces wines in two tiers under one dynamic and compelling label. The single-varietal series includes a Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir and Merlot. Only worthy wines are selected each year for the winery's top tier, winemaker Sandra Oldfield's signature wines, named the Oldfield Series. This tier provides Oldfield with a playground for experimentation and is a creative showcase for the best wines from each vintage. All Tinhorn Creek wines evoke the unique terroir of the region: the sage-covered desert terrain.
Tinhorn Creek was the first winery in Canada to bottle its entire portfolio with Stelvin screw-cap closures ensuring consistent aging and a guarantee that the wine will be enjoyed as it was intended.

The Hatch Winery - West Kelowna
There’s little doubt winemaker Jason Parkes marches to the beat of his own drum but then so does the off-beat, tattooed, back-of-the-house Hatch team who don’t look anything like your typical assistant winemakers. From the day it opened, the west Kelowna winery has been the different one as they pursue a philosophy of diversity, authenticity and individuality that takes them up and down the Okanagan Valley in search of derelict vineyards and high quality fruit. At Hatch headquarters, we catch up with crew to talk about the obvious progress this idiosyncratic, hipster winery is making in an ultra-conservative business and find out what everyone is Yelp-ing about.
