Desert National Park (Jaisalmer, INDIA)
Jaisalmer, nicknamed The Golden city, The Desert National Park is an excellent example of the ecosystem of the Thar Desert. Sand dunes form around 20% of the Park. The major landform consists of craggy rocks and compact salt lake bottoms, intermedial areas and fixed dunes.
BIRDS OF THE INDIAN THAR DESERT
This is a trip report about my journey along the indian thar desert from bikaner to jaisalmer and desert national park. it include birds like indian bustard, demossile crane and other desert birds.
Asiatic Wildcat or Desert Cat, Desert National Park, Jaisalmer, India
The Asiatic Wildcat Felis silvestris ornata occurs from the eastern Caspian region, north to Kazakhstan, into Pakistan and western India, western China and Mongolia. They are also known as Asian steppe cats or Indian desert cats.
As with all wildcat species, Asiatic Wildcats face considerable threat from habitat loss and poaching. Reclaiming wastelands in the name of development has resulted in the destruction of much of their habitat in India.
These cats can be found near cultivated areas and human settlements, which increases cross-breeding with feral domestic cats. Hybridization with feral domestic cats has been reported from Pakistan, India and Central Asia.
In the past, Asiatic Wildcats were heavily trapped for their fur, although at present there is little international trade in their pelts. In 1979, traders declared stocks of 41,845 pelts for an export amnesty. Asiatic Wildcat pelts also formed a major portion of the small cats’ skin seizures in India from 1982-1999.
No detailed ecological studies exist on Asiatic Wildcats and the available information on their ecology and distribution seems to be based on random, opportunistic observations.
Ecology and Rural Development Society is working with local Communities for Conservation of Great Indian Bustard in this landscape where Desert Cat coexist as one of the carnivore.

Jaisalmer City Guide | Exploring India's desert city
Today we are exploring the golden desert city of Jaisalmer. Which is, unfortunately, our final stop in India before heading back to Delhi to fly to Australia.
We start our day off by watching the sunrise over the Gadisar Lake before exploring the Jaisalmer Fort. As we were visiting Jaisalmer at the end of March we decided to do most of our exploring in the morning to try and beat the sweltering heat! By 10.30am it was 36 degrees!
To finish our day off we try some traditional Rajasthani street food before heading to dinner to watch the sunset over the fort.
