Winter in Morocco I Marrakesh, Oukaimeden, Atlas Mountains, Ouarzazate, Sahara Desert
One of the best places to go during winter if you are up for an amazing adventure! Sleep overnight in a desert camp and watch the sky full of stars (It's spectacular!). Drive up the Atlas Mountains and see different landscapes from desert land, rocky mountains (with ones looking like the Grand Canyons in the USA), berber villages (like the ones you see from those bible movies), palm valley (thousands of palms lined up the streets) and so much moreeeeee. :) Go to a ski resort in Oukaimeden and see the buzzling cities of Casablanca and Marrakesh. Drink their famous mint tea and indulge yourself with various Tagine dishes. There's so much to see and experience!

DESERT CAMPING IN THE SAHARA | ZAGORA, MOROCCO
This trip to the Sahara Desert is possibly one of my favourite trips I have ever taken in Africa. Driving from Marrakech, we took the 7-8 hour trip to Zagora in the Sahara Desert.
We started the day driving up through the high-Atlas mountains, with all the snow topped peaks, it was incredible to get such an incredible view for a lot of the drive.
We stopped off at a number of view points and local Berber villages along the way. Something I didn't realise though was just how many Hollywood movies had been filmed in Morocco, particularly along the route to Zagora. We got the chance to visit Eit Ben Haddou, which is famously known for TV shows such as Game of Thrones and movies like Cleopatra, Lawrence of Arabia & Gladiator. We were lucky enough to meet some of the local people who took us around and told us the story behind how it become such a hotspot for big budget movies.
After a long day of driving, we arrived in Zagora and took a desert camel ride to our campsite in the desert, which is probably one of the best travel experiences I have ever had. Camping under the stars, drinking local tea whilst listening to traditional Morrocon music....what more could you ask of a travel experience.

#06 Erfoud (Morocco Travel Guide)
Visiting Morocco is a once in a lifetime experience!
Morocco’s Sahara Desert is vast and extensive comprising of four peak desert dunes referred to as Merzouga, Zagora, M’hamid and Erg Chegaga. Each part of Morocco’s Sahara Desert offers travelers a unique experience. Merzouga is known for it’s vast and golden Erg Chebbi Dunes that are hundreds of meters high. The regions of Zagora and M’hamid are known for longer, rolling more rustic and earthy colored dunes. Their sister Sahara Desert, Erg Chegaga has a legend of being primarily for the die-hard Morocco adventure traveler who wants to say they made it to one of the last regions. Regardless of which dunes are visited on a Morocco Sahara Desert trip any traveler is guaranteed to be enchanted with the region they choose to visit.
Best way to explore Morocco’s Sahara Desert region is to begin by starting in Ouarzazate. Ouarzazate is one of the leading provinces in Southern Morocco and a former French protectorate administrative center. Ouarzazate is also considered the door to the Sahara Desert and used as a starting point for all Sahara Desert trips and excursions.
To maximize a Sahara Desert regional experience a six day Morocco adventure is most advisable. Travelers can start their desert trip in Ouarzazate with a visit it’s famous Kasbahs. Ouarzazate is known for it’s UNESCO World Heritage site Ait Benhaddou Kasbah along with the Glaoui Kasbahs called Kasbah Taourirt and Kasbah Tamadaght. Kasbah Tifoultilte is another Kasbah that is worth visiting for tea and a sneak inside at it’s magical interior.
Not to be missed when exploring Morocco’s Sahara Desert region of Ouarzazate is the Atlas Film Studios. The Atlas Film Studios is where David Lean filmed Lawrence of Arabia in the early 1960’s. Since then many famous directors have followed in his footsteps to exploit the magnificent scenery. International blockbusters shot here in recent years include: the French version of Cleopatra, Bertolucci’s Sheltering Sky, Scorsese’s Kundun, Gillies MacKannon’s Hideous Kinky, Ridley Scott’s Gladiator, Black Hawke Down, Oliver Stone’s Alexander The Great, Ridley Scott’s Kingdom of Heaven, and Penelope Cruz’s Sahara.
Camel Trek Sahara Desert
A visit to the Sahara desert is definitely an experience everyone should have at least once in their lifetime. It is a journey well worth the effort and you will have fond memories to last you forever. Imagine yourself on top a camel, trekking through the Sahara desert. There is nothing around you and all you can hear are the footsteps of the camel on the soft sand. The sky is vast and clear in the day and filled with millions of bright stars at night. It is a very peaceful experience, one raley known to most of the Western World.
The dunes of Erg Chebbi near Merzouga is 30 miles (50km) south east of Erfoud and has the highest and most spectacular sand dunes in Morocco. These golden dunes dramatically 50m from the desert floor. They run in a line almost perfectly north/south to the village of Merzouga and beyond, and mark the western fringe of the Sahara Desert, dividing Morocco from Algeria.
A experience not to be missed in Erfoud are the several fossils museums where fossils from upto 600 million years ago are displayed. These fossils are collected from the nearby desert and are thought to be formed at a time when the western Sahara was under water!
The dunes of Erg Chigaga (Erg Chegaga) near M'hamid is in the south of Morocco, over the Atlas Mountains and pass Zagora. Erg Chigaga is also part of the Sahara desert and more difficult to get to than Erg Chebbi.
This ocean of pure Saharan sand, provides the back drop to an authentic Arabian adventure which involes a camel trek across the dunes to a secluded oasis, where an authentic spicy Berber tagine is being prepared over an open fire by Bedouin tents.
For more info on traveling to Erfoud, please check here
Sand, stars, blisters & heat. The Sahara challenge.
An unforgettable challenge in more ways than one. You'll make friends, have a laugh, push yourself (especially your feet!) scale the heights of Erg Chgaga, sleep under the stars and feel a million miles from home. See for yourself.
