Cairo Apartment Tour: Our place in downtown Cairo
This is a quick tour of our place in downtown Cairo so that people can have an idea of what apartments are like there.
We really liked the architecture, the coffee shops and the young fun dancers, artists and writers that we met there.
Our neighborhood was really safe (as are most neighborhoods in Cairo) and we lived close to the metro which was very convenient.
Ramadan Month Decorations and Atmosphere in Cairo, Egypt
As much as the month of Ramadan in Cairo, Egypt, is different because of being a Holy month in which the Muslims try to come closer to God, it is also different because the Egyptians have their own ways of decorating the streets and giving them another taste.
Even if you are not a Muslim, you will directly and immediately fall in love with the streets during Ramadan month in Cairo, Egypt; you will love the idea of using lanterns, as well as those fabrics which they use to decorate tables, walls, and even making street decorations out of them and which usually carry the drawings that reveal culture, traditions, and bring color to the whole place.
The Egyptian streets in the Holy month of Ramadan are not only decorated with those different lights and decorations, but they are also decorated with the ones related to this month only, such as the famous fanous فانوس which is a lantern that dates back to Caliph Moez Eldin and which is only used during this month. From the other things that only appear during Ramadan are the night callers who are known as AlMusaharati المسحراتي and who wanders the streets of Cairo in order to wake people up before El-Fajr prayer time for them to eat and drink - although most of them are usually awake already not like the old days of Cairo.
Usually, people like the idea of visiting old Cairo ( - El Moez street and Khan El Khalili - during Ramadan because they believe that the whole atmosphere there is different, which could be true to a great extent, but now even the places in New Cairo tend to turn their Ramadan spirit on with using the same kind of decoration, making it not much different from heading to old Cairo - that's of course apart from the old Islamic buildings that make it different in the area of old Cairo.
The Holy month of Ramadan is known to be the closest month to the hearts of the Muslims all over the world because it is when they are called upon in order to renew their spiritual commitment through fasting till Maghrib prayer time, praying, as well as through the acts of charity; in other words it is the month of the year for them to purify their souls and refocus their attention and try to come closer to God.
The decorations, prayers, and night callers are the things related to Ramadan when it comes to the things appearing to the outside world, but there are actually other good things about this Holy month which we should mention. During the Holy month of Ramadan, friends and family gather on Iftar and they might sometimes gather during Sohour time as well, which brings people closer during this month. In addition to that, during this month people tend to watch the television because there are different series done to be specifically aired during the month.
Generally speaking, the Holy month of Ramadan is different for the Muslim world for the different reasons related to religion but when it comes to Cairo, Egypt, the whole month is given a makeover that includes the streets and the television in it. The decorations made in the streets of Cairo during Ramadan give people the feeling that people are always awake, day and night.
When Ramadan is over, people are usually happy because then comes the feast (عيد الفطر) which is usually taken off and which celebrates what they have been doing in the Holy month.
A lot of those who travel to Egypt during the Holy month of Ramadan, enjoy the spirit they are faced with, although it becomes difficult to make tours since most of those Muslims workers will be fasting and thus might find some difficulties related to focusing and giving all what they can.
It is considered a good idea for those Muslims living abroad to go and spend some time off during Ramadan in Egypt in order to enjoy the spirit of the month which is scattered all around the streets of the city and at the same time enjoy the Islamic buildings of old Cairo in El Muizz street by visiting the place at night or even managing to have iftar in any of the restaurants that are found in the area.
Egypt has always been known as the country filled with history and that is one of the top reasons behind being one of the Arabic countries always visited, since tourists usually love the idea of checking the Pharaonic monuemts, temples, and museums. When it comes to the Holy month of Ramadan, Cairo is also considered the place where people could spend their Ramadan differently since not all the Muslim countries apply the same kind of decorations all over the streets and give the whole city or country another taste and feeling.
If you are planning to visit old Cairo during the month of Ramadan then it would be a nice idea to check Beit El Sehemy which holds different Ramadan events ( go through El Moez street and its buildings and different mosques ( and also check the area of Khan El Khalili market.
Downtown, Cairo, Egypt - The Urban Center of Cairo
Downtown, Cairo, Egypt - It has been regarded as the urban center of Cairo since the 19th century and it is now where most of the Egyptian landmarks that located in Cairo are found.
Downtown, Cairo (وسط البلد in Arabic) has been built with using the help of French hands in order to impress on the importance of placing the European architectural style of buildings in the area as well as implementing some of the other European urban planning that include wide streets and the geometrical harmony.
Being the urban center of Cairo for all these years, downtown Cairo is still considered the center of Cairo in general when it comes to reaching out for other destinations and one of the places where a lot of tourists prefer to book their hotels in order to be close to as many landmarks and touristic places as possible.
There are different places to visit in Cairo in general but when it comes to the downtown area, there are a couple of things to be mentioned. Talaat Harb sqaure is one of the landmarks that mark the downtown area in Cairo. Talaat Harb sqaure is where the statue of Talaat Harb, the founder of Banque Misr is located; this is a place where you will pass by or else get the chance to see if you decided to sit in Groppi, the first and oldest ice cream shop to be found in downtown Cairo and the one that managed to live until today, that it started to become a landmark on its own.
Abdeen sqaure is another famous attraction in downtown, Cairo, Egypt, and this mainly goes back to Abdeen Palace that is placed there. There are several restaurants and cafes to be found in Abdeen square and there are some festivals that take place there as well. Abdeen Palace has been one of the famous residential palaces for the presidents of Egypt before it all moves to Etihadia Palace.
Qasr El Nil Bridge is not like a touristic place to head for but this is also a place where you will most probably pass by when you are going back and forth from downtown to other places like Zamalek. Qasr El Nile Bridge has been always famous with the lions that stand on its entrance, making it different from any other bridge that could be found in Cairo. This has always been considered the first bridge to link central Cairo, downtown, to other areas found around across the Nile River.
Tahrir square is one of the biggest squares that could be found in Cairo, Egypt, and it is found in downtown where some old buildings and attractions are found as well, such as the Egyptian Museum. This square is known to be the place for the political demonstrations done and the latest was the 2011 revolution in Cairo.
The Egyptian Museum ( comes next on the list and this is the place where most of the Pharaonic antiquities are found and is also the place were lots of important pieces of Egyptian history is placed. The Egyptian Museum is one of those destinations and Cairo attractions that tourists place on the list of places to visit in Cairo, Egypt, and it also happens to be in downtown area.
There are some attractions that are located near the downtown area that people consider them part of it, such as Cairo Tower ( which is technically placed on Zamalek Island but which people always consider it part of downtown since it is only minutes away and could be also reached by walking - of course according to which part of downtown you are staying at. Cairo Tower is believed to be the second most famous landmark in Cairo after the Pyramids although it is not that much old, and it is considered the longest building in Egypt and North Africa.
These are most of the things that one could manage to visit in the downtown area of Cairo. The most important thing to mention here is the Nile River which is considered part of El Zamalek Island, downtown, Maadi residence area; it is actually the river that links lots of areas together.
The best thing to do in downtown, Cairo, Egypt, is to walk through its streets in order to spot those old European buildings built there, experience walking through those Egyptian streets along with their shops, and finally getting the chance to see those squares with statues found around which you might not get the chance to enjoy while being in a car (
Egypt has always been known as the country that is stuffed with several museums, monuments, buildings, temples, and other attractions that reveal the rich history that it has and this always makes Egypt one of the Arabian countries in the Middle East that people would be willing to visit in order to enjoy what the old Pharaohs have previously done.
From the general tips that you should keep in mind when it comes to walking the streets of downtown is to take good care of your belongings and never be too easy with beggars.
Downtown, Cairo, Egypt, is a hell of an experience, if you have been there and walked through it, tell us about it all :-)

Aquarium Grotto Garden, Cairo, Egypt - El Zamalek Island
Aquarium Grotto Garden, Cairo, Egypt - There might be a beautiful aquarium to visit in Alexandria ( Egypt, although it is a small one, but when it comes to Cairo, the aquarium grotto garden is considered the only fish garden to be found in there.
The aquarium grotto garden in Cairo is found on El Zamalek island, the district with the most green areas in Cairo. The location of this aquarium garden is Gabalaya street in Zamalek and it is one of the most famous places that the old Egyptian movies used to shoot the love scenes there.
The aquarium grotto garden (حديقة الأسماك in Arabic) was opened to the public in the 19th century after it was a private property of El Khedive Ismail. This place was very famous for lovers more than a century ago but these days it started to lose its popularity.
A lot of visitors say that the garden is not the same as it used to be and that is one of the reasons why people stopped going there as much as they used to. Even though it is named the aquarium grotto, there aren't many fish found inside as one would expect, yet the place is considered a beautiful destination for a beautiful walk there.
When this garden was in the construction phase, an Italian engineer was responsible to bring something that is much like the Italian gardens and even the passages which are made from real lime can get you lost inside the place while you are trying to discover its different corners and passages.
Even though the sea species are not so many, there are rare ones which you could see inside, such as the hundred and so aged turtle that lives beside a fish which could clean its tank alone. In addition to the living sea creatures, there are also different mummified species which are placed in jars and each is written its details on the jar.
We recommend this aquarium grotto garden not only for couples, but we also recommend it for families because it could be a very good picnic place where the kids could play and ride the bicycles. It is also considered a good place in the middle of Zamalek island where there is no noise and where one could run away from the hassle of the traffic jam happening outside; you should just bring something to sit on because the chairs there need to be repaired.
This peaceful place is good for a morning walk since the working hours of the garden start at 8:30 in the morning and ends at 4:30 in the afternoon, giving people the chance to have some good time inside during the first part of the day.
The entrance fee for the aquarium grotto garden is five Egyptian pounds per person, which is considered reasonable and not expensive by any means, giving the person the chance to head there with his/her family members without worrying about the amount of money that will be paid.
The staff working in the aquarium grotto garden are very helpful and will offer all the information you might need while wandering in the place. Some of those old working staff are well aware of the different scenes being shot in the place back in the black and white Egyptian movies and could point out these locations and tell you who were the actors.
The aquarium grotto garden is one of the things that used to be very famous in the golden times before, not only due to the movies being shot there, but also because famous actors and actresses of the old time used to have some walks in the garden, and one of them is Abdel Halim Hafez, who also used to live just beside the garden that his apartment could be spotted from there.
El Zamalek is one of the fancy places in Cairo, Egypt, that people always love to hang out in it because it is an island that hosts different cafes and restaurants and thus give the people the chance to enjoy a good time by the Nile - of course that comes in addition to some of the other hidden gems which are found in the streets inside. The aquarium grotto garden is part of El Zamalek and it gives the visitors the chance to enjoy other things after finishing their walk, such as heading to the Andalus park in which they could sit, have a walk, or enjoy staying away from the crowded streets (
There are different places in Egypt that could let you more knowledgeable about the city, such as visiting Cairo Tower which is also found in Zamalek ( or else tending to go to the Egyptian Museum which is not far away and is placed in El Tahrir square ( going to the Islamic Art Museum ( or else walking through the streets and trying to discover more about the old Egypt.
There are different things to know about Egypt and in addition to spending the days visiting the historic places, sometimes going to gardens is needed to make the day much more comfortable. This grotto is the place for those who want to have a walk in a quiet area away from the street.

Where to Go in Cairo, Egypt - Places to Visit in Cairo
Cairo, Egypt - The history, civilization, and the amount of treasure that this country carries always attract the tourists to it. Egypt is filled with lots of sightseeing tours that one should experience and there are different museums, temples, gardens, mosques, and other landmarks which always impress those visiting it.
We have been in Egypt and discovered that all the days one will manage to stay in this country will be filled with plans to be done and which will be related to the things one is supposed to see and which are related to different eras; you could visit those from the Islamic era, those related to the Pharaohs, as well as those which might have been built during the 20th century but still in the early beginning of it.
We are here to help you with some of the places we enjoyed visiting and those which we recommend, both for exploring the history of Egypt as well as for relaxing a little bit in the middle of all the walking you will be involved with.
The first suggestion is the great pyramids of Giza, which will probably already be the first on your list. The pyramids of Giza are from the Pharaonic time and they are the tombs for their owners because they believed in the afterlife and wanted a tomb that would be enough for their bodies as well as their belongings. In the pyramids you could pay a ticket to enter the whole area in general and you could also pay extra fees to enter the pyramid itself from the inside. (
The second Egyptian attraction to shed the lights on is the Egyptian Museum which carries different artifacts that tell people about the history of the country ( Some of these artifacts have been carried out in order to be placed in the new National Museum of Egyptian Civilization. The Egyptian Museum is found in the downtown area - Tahrir square - which means that you could have a walk in this place and see the old buildings which were inspired by the French buildings.
Egypt generally is known to be a place where there aren't lots of green areas to be spotted around but some old Egyptians managed to exert some effort and time to bring out parks to the people. From those which we consider good suggestions, there is Al Andalus park found on El Zamalek island and which was a gift from Khedive Ismail to his wife; the best thing about this park is that you will be walking by the Nile River and will also see some old statues there ( Another park is Al Azhar and this one is considered the largest in Cairo, Egypt, near the old Cairo place and which is one to choose for having dinner or lunch with a view of the citadel and old Cairo. And the last option here is also found in Zamalek and is the aquarium grotto garden which has always been the place for celebrities to have a walk and was even spotted in a lot of black and white Egyptian movies.
The journey is still going on. Since we have mentioned Al Azhar park which is only minutes away from old Cairo, then we have to mention that visiting old Cairo where El Moez street is found is considered a must ( there you will get the chance to see old buildings built in the Islamic design and you will also manage to see different mosques there, not just that, but will come across famous places or museums such as Beit El Sehemy ( Getting done with these attractions, you could have a walk until you reach Khan El Khalili market and enjoy a good cup of mint tea in one of the old Egyptian style coffee shops found there (
Again, there are lots of destinations in Cairo, Egypt, which are too close to one another. In addition to Al Azhar park and old Cairo which are so close, there is also Cairo citadel (also known as Salah Al Din citadel) and the religious community which are all around the same area. In Cairo citadel you will walk there to check different mosques including the most famous one, Muhammad Ali mosque, and different museums as well ( Getting done with the tour in Salah Al Din citadel, you could then move forward to the religious community, the place where the three different religions are found in the same area; the hanging church, Amr Ibn El-Aas mosque, as well as Bin Ezra synagogue (
There are some other landmarks in Cairo which you will need to visit and one of them is Cairo Tower. This tower was considered the tallest building in Africa for 10 years before another was built in South Africa, so it is now considered the tallest in Egypt and North Africa for about 50 years now. This place will give you the chance to view central Cairo from above or even have dinner at the rotating restaurant found up there (

Great Pyramid of Giza, Giza, Cairo, Lower Egypt, North Africa, Africa
The Giza Necropolis is an archaeological site on the Giza Plateau, on the outskirts of Cairo, Egypt. This complex of ancient monuments includes the three pyramid complexes known as the Great Pyramids, the massive sculpture known as the Great Sphinx, several cemeteries, a workers' village and an industrial complex. It is located some 9 km (5 mi) inland into the desert from the old town of Giza on the Nile, some 25 km (15 mi) southwest of Cairo city centre. The pyramids, which have historically loomed large as emblems of ancient Egypt in the Western imagination, were popularised in Hellenistic times, when the Great Pyramid was listed by Antipater of Sidon as one of the Seven Wonders of the World. It is by far the oldest of the ancient Wonders and the only one still in existence. The Pyramids of Giza consist of the Great Pyramid of Giza (known as the Great Pyramid and the Pyramid of Cheops or Khufu), the somewhat smaller Pyramid of Khafre (or Chephren) a few hundred meters to the south-west, and the relatively modest-sized Pyramid of Menkaure (or Mykerinos) a few hundred meters further south-west. The Great Sphinx lies on the east side of the complex. Current consensus among Egyptologists is that the head of the Great Sphinx is that of Khafre. Along with these major monuments are a number of smaller satellite edifices, known as queens pyramids, causeways and valley pyramids. Most construction theories are based on the idea that the pyramids were built by moving huge stones from a quarry and dragging and lifting them into place. The disagreements center on the method by which the stones were conveyed and placed and how possible the method was. A recent though unpopular theory proposes that the building blocks were manufactured in-place from a kind of limestone concrete. In building the pyramids, the architects might have developed their techniques over time. They would select a site on a relatively flat area of bedrock (not sand) which provided a stable foundation. After carefully surveying the site and laying down the first level of stones, they constructed the pyramids in horizontal levels, one on top of the other. For the Great Pyramid of Giza, most of the stone for the interior seems to have been quarried immediately to the south of the construction site. The smooth exterior of the pyramid was made of a fine grade of white limestone that was quarried across the Nile. These exterior blocks had to be carefully cut, transported by river barge to Giza, and dragged up ramps to the construction site. Only a few exterior blocks remain in place at the bottom of the Great Pyramid. During the Middle Ages (5th century to 15th century), people may have taken the rest away for building projects in the city of Cairo. To ensure that the pyramid remained symmetrical, the exterior casing stones all had to be equal in height and width. Workers might have marked all the blocks to indicate the angle of the pyramid wall and trimmed the surfaces carefully so that the blocks fit together. During construction, the outer surface of the stone was smooth limestone; excess stone has eroded as time has passed. The Pyramids of Giza and others are thought to have been constructed to house the remains of the deceased Pharaohs who ruled over Ancient Egypt. A portion of the Pharaoh's spirit called his ka was believed to remain with his corpse. Proper care of the remains was necessary in order for the former Pharaoh to perform his new duties as king of the dead. It's theorized the pyramid not only served as a tomb for the Pharaoh but also as storage for the various items he would need in the afterlife. The people of Ancient Egypt believed that death on Earth was the start of a journey to the next world. The embalmed body of the King was entombed underneath or within the pyramid to protect it and allow his transformation and ascension to the afterlife. The sides of all three of the Giza pyramids were astronomically oriented to the north-south and east-west within a small fraction of a degree. Among recent attempts to explain such a clearly deliberate pattern are those of S. Haack, O. Neugebauer, K. Spence, D. Rawlins, K. Pickering, and J. Belmonte. The arrangement of the pyramids is a disputed representation of the Orion constellation in the Orion Correlation Theory.
El Azhar Park; One of the largest Public Spaces in Cairo
El Azhar Park, Cairo, Egypt, which among other honors given to it, is considered one of the world's sixty greatest spaces found out there and which are done by the Project for Public Spaces.
Looking for a green area where you could enjoy a good view for Egypt, give your kids the chance to play in the garden, and at the same time find a good place to sit in and have a good meal? Then it is important that we recommend El Azhar Park for you, which is found in Cairo.
Although El Azhar park is considered one of the projects done recently - in the last 20 years - it is still considered an old project that has been worked on since the 80's. The design of this place was focused on building the gardens in the historical Islamic way with a blend of using modern and traditional elements.
This park opened its gates to the public in 2005 and it was considered different due to the historical gem that was discovered in it and which was the Ayyubid Wall and towers and which are now considered part of the park; this wall shed the light on Al-Darb Al-Ahmar, one of the poorest areas in Cairo, which is attached to El Azhar Park.
This place is not much related to the history of Egypt but it is interesting to visit it because it shows the Islamic designs and gives you the chance to walk through the green areas which are not much found in the ordinary streets of Egypt, just make sure that you are visiting this park during the days of the week because weekends are usually too crowded.
Speaking of Egypt tourism, El Azhar Park will give you the chance to have a view of the Citadel ( across the far end you could also view the pyramids ( and you will also get introduced to the small areas which are considered part of the poor places in Egypt and get the chance to see the way they tend to live - just from afar.
El Azhar park is considered a good choice for those who want a place to have a nice dinner with a different view - which could be the citadel - and at the same time a place that serves good food. It is also a nice area to enjoy different buildings which take the Islamic look and atmosphere.
This is a great place to do picnics, enjoy the green areas away from all the hassle of the city and the roars of the cars, and a place to take a breath from all the historical places that you have been visiting and all the information that you have been collecting about the country.
There might be some negative things about the place and which are related to the guards who could ban you from sitting in specific green areas, but other than that, the place is really a recommendation and a must if you have the time and at the same time want to experience a new kind of restaurant and atmosphere.
Salah Al Din Citadel is so close to Al Azhar Park, only 5 minutes drive away, so you could always visit the citadel and Muhammad Ali mosque ( and then go to the park in order to rest, eat good food, and all with a good view.
El Azhar Park is not found in the downtown ( like most of the other attractions that one could visit in Egypt, but it is located in Salah Salem street, which is one of the most famous found in Egypt and which links El-Darb El-Ahmar, the old place of El Hussien, and other areas with Heliopolis.
The working hours of this park are everyday of the week from 9 Am until 10 PM, except the weekend it opens until 11 PM. The Entrance fees are very cheap, it only costs 5 Egyptian pounds during the days of the week and 7 Egyptian pounds during the weekend, which will give you the permission needed to enter the place and choose any of the restaurants found there.
This is considered a beautiful place which we recommend during your stay in Cairo, Egypt, because it will help you to relax for part of the day and now we could also say that it will give you the permission to see the discovered historical Ayyubid wall that was built by Salah El Din years and years back.
There are different other places to visit while you are staying in Cairo, Egypt. There are the great Pyramids of Giza ( the old place of Al Moez street ( along with Khan Al-Khalili area (
In addition to the historical places that are usually placed in the to-do list related to Cairo, Egypt, there are also those places which you could visit and which are more related to the scenes, the atmosphere, and the food. From the examples are El Azhar Park, El Orman Park ( walking by the Nile ( or even enjoying any of the restaurants or cafes found there.
The Islamic designs of the buildings inside make the whole place different, so try never to miss the chance of visiting this park.

Salah El-Din Citadel - Cairo Citadel - Egypt
Cairo Citadel, Cairo, Egypt - The huge ancient fortification that is found near the center of Cairo, Egypt, and which hosts a long walk, museums, and also is the place where Muhammad Ali Mosque is found (
The history of Egypt is so stuffed with information and places to see that make this country one of the most beautiful historical destinations to head to if all what you want to see is museums, citadels, and other places that reveal more about its history.
The Citadel of Cairo is known as Salah El-Din Citadel since Salah El-Din, the Ayyubid ruler, was the one to build it surrounding both Cairo and Fustat and protect them from crusaders. Salah El-Din once said that this wall will make both Cairo and Fustat whole.
Being located on Mokattam hill, which is now a famous residence area that is just across the Citadel, Salah El-Din Citadel has always been famous for its fresh breeze and the different views of Cairo city that it could offer, because it lies on a higher level than the rest of the residences found around it in the same area.
Being one of the famous historical attractions and which was even proclaimed previously by UNESCO as part of the World Heritage Site Historic Cairo and was the center of the new Islamic world, this citadel is now one of the top destinations that tourists place on their to-do list in Egypt to get astonished with all the scenes they could manage to see inside.
There are different things to come across inside this citadel, there are three different mosques to enter; there is the most famous which is Muhammad Ali Mosque and which not only astonishes the visitors from the inside, but it also gives them the chance to take pictures of Cairo from the grand view it offers. There is also Al-Nasir Muhammad Mosque and Sulyman Pasha Mosque.
In addition to the mosques, there are also three different museums to get inside and see the rare items they carry, which are: Al Gawhara Palace, the Carriage Museum, and the Egyptian Military museum.
From the different tips that we would offer is for women to have something in order to cover their head while entering the museums - keeping in mind that the outfit should be appropriate as well, and the second tip is for visitors to bring their water along because they will do a lot of walking inside and the prices there might be a little bit more expensive than the ordinary markets in the streets.
This is a great place for tourists to spend their day - because it probably needs a couple of hours inside for the different historical treasures that one needs to check. The architectural design of the place make it a highlight in addition to the rich history about Egypt that one will be introduced to there.
Cairo Citadel working hours are every day from 9 AM until 4 PM, the only difference might occur in the mosques inside on Friday during Friday prayers; the mosques might not allow visitors, only those who want to pray. Cairo citadel entrance fees are 60 Egyptian pounds for foreigners.
The amount of time spent inside the citadel will always differ from one person to another according to the things they will be seeing and the things they will enter, but all in all, it will never take less than an hour, you will spend some time there.
It might not be that close to the downtown area where the Egyptian museum ( the Cairo Tower ( and other tourist attractions are found, but it is so close to other important sightseeing tours that you should visit. Cairo citadel is so close to the old Egypt area which is all about El Moez street ( Khan El Khalili ( El Azhar, and all these markets, museums, and mosques that are found inside, and it is also just minutes away from El Azhar park where you could find a good restaurant to have your lunch or dinner and manage to have a view of old Egypt at the same time (
Egypt is filled with different touristic places that one could visit, some of them are found in Cairo, while there are a lot to be found in Alexandria, Luxor, Aswan, and other places around this beautiful country, like visiting Fayyoum for example; it doesn't have to be a historical thing because the nature in Egypt could also manage to take your breath away (
There are other destinations to head to in Cairo, such as visiting the Great Pyramids of Giza ( going to the Islamic Art Museum in downtown area ( or going to the new National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (
There are a lot of things to see in Egypt, you just have to make a good plan that will allow you to visit every single place without wasting your time.

DBS Cairo - Dahab Island - DESIGN PHASE
Building a community center attached to a football field, the project would act as a prototype for designed nonexclusive public space on the island, something Cairo lacks in general.
The idea is to be as sustainable as possible, from the choice of site location (unused wasteland under El Mounib bridge) to the choice of material usage (recycled scaffolding wood).
Construction is planned to start in January 2015.

Heliopolis - Highlight of Ancient Egypt and Modern Cairo
Heliopolis, Cairo, Egypt - The place that in Greek is translated to sun city and which is considered the major city of ancient Egypt and the sun that lights the new modern Cairo, Egypt, these days.
In Cairo, Egypt, there are now different residence areas found out there, but those which are considered the oldest are downtown, Cairo, as well as Heliopolis area, and this could be witnessed from the old buildings that combine atheism, European, and Islamic designs all in the same place.
Historically, Heliopolis was the major city of ancient Egypt, it was the capital of the 13th or Heliopolite Nome of lower Egypt and a major religious center. There were different temples and other buildings in this area that were mostly destroyed in order to build medieval Cairo, yet there are some buildings that are living until this day, such as Baron Palace, the Obelisk of the Temple of Ra-Atum which is now called Al-Masalla and found in Al-Matariyyah in Cairo, as well as those buildings which one will come across in Korba area and Roxy.
Although there are now different areas that are considered part of Heliopolis, the ones which are mainly thought about when the name is mentioned now are the area around Al-Baron Palace, the area which is now known as Korba, as well as Roxy area; there might be other things to come into consideration but those are considered the ones mostly known to be part of Heliopolis.
There are important places to visit in Cairo, Egypt, when in comes to Heliopolis (which is also now referred to as New Egypt مصر الجديدة) and from these we would suggest Korba, where there are different buildings for you to get impressed by and there are several cafes and restaurants to sit at; this area is considered now an elite area in Heliopolis.
Just minutes away from Korba, there are two different directions to head to, either you will go to check the Roxy residence area, which is now nothing but a lot of shops and a crowded area, or else you will head to the other direction and check the Baron Palace, which is considered a much better plan.
The Baron Empain Palace was the residence of Baron Empain who was a famous Egyptologist and prominent Belgian Entrepreneur. This palace was inspired by the Hindu temple of Angkor Wat in Cambodia; it was designed by the French architect, Alexandre Marcel and was decorated by Georges Louis Claude.
The Baron palace is one of the most important landmarks of Heliopolis, Cairo, Egypt, because it is not only perfectly designed, but because it is the place where the person, Baron Empain, who established Heliopolis was living. Establishing Heliopolis was done with the help of Boghos Nubar.
Heliopolis, Cairo, Egypt is the location of Cairo International Airport and it is considered the center of the New Egypt area. Heliopolis is also considered the place where the wealthy Egyptians tend to live, especially when it comes to the area surrounding the Baron Palace.
Around the are of the Baron palace, you might find some outstanding buildings as well, these go back to important characters in the old times but which mostly now belong to the Egyptian Military or else are used as a presidential guest house.
This area is too close to the airport, only 10 minutes away by car, the problem comes when there are traffic jams in Salah Salem street, which is considered the most famous. The only problem one might find if decided to stay in Heliopolis during his/her trip to Egypt is the fact that it is not so close to the other landmarks and historical areas which one would be willing to visit in the same way it would be if one stayed in the downtown area (
There are lots of things to see in Heliopolis, Cairo, Egypt, when it comes to the religious part, there are different mosques, cathedrals, and there is even Al-Missalah street synagogue, making this place a mixture of religions that could satisfy everyone's needs.
It is interesting to see things that hold mythical stories behind such as the case with Al Baron palace which is closed to the public. This place is referred to as the house of ghosts or the house of horror due to the different sounds of furniture moving at night or else the lights that flash inside the tower that happen at night and which were even seen by those residents who are living around the palace.
There are different things to do in Cairo, Egypt, in general, such as heading to the Egyptian Museum ( enjoying the Nile River ( heading to the Pyramids ( or even checking the hidden treasures of this country which might be related to gardens, restaurants, and night life, or else heading to old Cairo area and enjoying the hidden gems that one could find there (
Have you been to Heliopolis, Cairo, Egypt? What do you think about this place?

Cairo Downtown Passageways - Re-design of Kodak and Philips Passageways
This project falls within the context of a broader research endeavor by CLUSTER, exploring the network of Cairo’s Downtown passages. These passageways offer an alternative framework for the development and revitalization of Downtown.
Cairo Downtown Passages aims to develop a pilot urban design and art project in the northern part of downtown Cairo, highlighting existing and emerging initiatives and activating underutilized public spaces. This passageway redevelopment project emerged from a design workshop held in April 2014, organized collaboratively by CLUSTER (Cairo Lab for Urban Studies, Training and Environmental Research), with DEDI (the Danish Egyptian Dialogue Institute) and CKU (the Centre for Culture and Development in Copenhagen) exploring art and design interventions in two passageways in Downtown Cairo: the Kodak and Phillips Passageways. CLUSTER has been working in the two passages over an extended period, undertaking mapping, interviews and outreach as part of our larger project on Downtown passageways as an alternative framework for development. This pilot project seeks to promote a more diverse, inclusive, and accessible public space downtown.
