Thiksay Gompa or Thiksay Monastery is a gompa affiliated with the Gelug sect of Tibetan Buddhism. It is located on top of a hill in Thiksey village, approximately 19 kilometres east of Leh in Ladakh, India.

Diskit Monastery Ladakh | Nubra to Pangong Lake | Incredible India | Steps Together
In this episode of Himalayan Hymns vlog series we cover the ride from Nubra valley to Diskit monastery and our proceeding towards Pangong lake.
Diskit has a spectacular seven storied monastery building and Monastic school near the highway. At Hunder sand dunes, double humped Bactrian Camel ride is popular with tourists.
Diskit monastery is one of the most beautiful buddhist monastery in Ladakh with Maitreya Buddha statue overlooking the vast nubra valley. Ride on royal enfield classic 500 motorcycle on the curvy yet beautiful roads of ladkah made this journey most memorable for us.

Ladakh Trip 2019 -Episode 4 (Diskit monastery, Hemis monastery, Indus river & Cold desert)
Diskit Monastery also known as Deskit Gompa or Diskit Gompa is the oldest and largest Buddhist monastery (gompa) in the Nubra Valley of Ladakh, northern India.[1][2]
It belongs to the Gelugpa (Yellow Hat) sect of Tibetan Buddhism. It was founded by Changzem Tserab Zangpo, a disciple of Tsong Khapa, founder of Gelugpa, in the 14th century.[3][4] It is a sub-gompa of the Thikse gompa.
Lachung Temple and Hundur Monastery are also located nearby, the latter is below the main road near a bridge.[3][4]
The monastery has statue of Cho Rinpoche (Crowned Buddha) in the prayer hall, a huge drum and several images of fierce guardian deities. An elevated cupola of the moanstery depicts a fresco of the Tashilhunpo Monastery of Tibet.
The Monastery administration runs a school, with support from a Non-Government Organization (NGO) known as the Tibet Support Group, which has computer facilities and teaches science subjects, in English, to Tibetan children of the region.
A popular festival known as Dosmoche or the Festival of the Scapegoat is held in the precincts of the monastery in February during the winter season, which is largely attended by people from villages of the Nubra Valley since the other regions in Leh are inaccessible during this period due to heavy snow fall.
Desert lands with extremely low temperatures are called cold deserts like Antarctica, which is the largest cold desert in the world. Ladakh in India is a cold desert that lies in the Great Himalayas on the eastern side of Jammu and Kashmir. It is also known as Khapa-chan, which means snow land.

Diskit Monastery also known as Deskit Gompa or Diskit Gompa is the oldest and largest Buddhist monastery (gompa) in the Nubra Valley of Ladakh, northern India.
The Diskit monastery was founded by Changzem Tserab Zangpo in the 14th century.
The Diskit monastery is situated on the hill, just above the flood plains of the Shyok River, on its right bank in the Diskit village (3,144 metres (10,315 ft)) in Nubra Valley.

RAFTING IN LEH, CAMEL RIDE, DISKIT MONASTERY | DAY 4 IN LEH
Hello peeps !!
Here is our DAY 4 itinerary:
We started our DAY 4 by checking out of our guest house (Wachan guest house, RECOMMENDED, Great host) in Hunder, Leh. We had the option to stay in Hunder or Diskit and we chose Hunder since it is a quaint village. And we totally loved the place. I wish we had 1 more day, We would have definitely gone to Turtuk which is the last Indian village on the India Pakistan border.
The very first place we stopped at were the sand dunes in Hunder. And did the double hump camel rides there. Totally worth it !
COST: INR 350/person for a 30 min ride
Next we covered the Diskit Monastery. The huge Buddha statue was beautifully overlooking the entire valley. This place has its own charm and offers a panoramic view of the Nubra Valley. MUST COME HERE.
Afterwards we went for Rafting in the Shyok river. And oh boy !! was that an experience !!
This was my first rafting experience and I am glad I started off in Leh. The water was ICE COLD and my feet were already freezing. The bar has been set really high. I plan to go to Rishikesh coming summer and explore more of it.
COST: INR 1200/person
We wrapped up everything at around 4 in the afternoon and left for Pangong via Shyok road.

Nubra is a tri-armed valley located to the north east of Ladakh valley. Diskit the capital of Nubra is about 150 km north from Leh town, the capital of Ladakh district, India. Local scholars say that its original name was Ldumra (the valley of flowers). The Shyok River meets the Nubra or Siachan River to form a large valley that separates the Ladakh and Karakoram Ranges. The Shyok river is a tributary of the Indus river. The average altitude of the valley is about 10,000 ft. i.e. 3048 metres above the sea level. The common way to access this valley is to travel over the Khardung La pass from Leh town. Foreign nationals are required to get a Protected area permit to visit the Nubra Valley. Since 1 April 2017 Indian citizens are also required to get an Inner Line Permit to visit the valley.
