SYRIA | What's It Like to be a Tourist in Damascus in 2019?
My trip to Syria was one of the most eye-opening journeys I've ever made. It was tough to reconcile my awareness of the recent tragic conflict in the country, with the beauty and positivity I experienced there... But certainly, the people of Damascus MADE my visit. Thank you to everyone who welcomed me there with open arms.
Please note: this vlog documents my personal trip to Syria, as a tourist. It is not necessarily a travel recommendation, nor a commentary on the political climate, nor an attempt to show the ordinary life of Syrian citizens.

Damascus (Syria) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Damascus in Syria.
Damascus is one of the most fascinating cities in the Orient and its colourful history is still very much apparent in its magnificent palaces.Today an impressive statue serves as a reminder of the city’s famous monarch, Saladin. In the twelfth century he did much to improve the city. A walk through the historic centre of Damascus is like a journey through more than two thousand years of oriental history. In contrast to many other cities in the Near and Middle East, most of the original buildings within the old town have survived the test of time. The city’s strategic location at the junction of several important caravan routes gave rise to a large number of fortified inns or ‘Caravansaries’, such as the Khan As’ad Pasha Al Azem. The Omayyad Mosque was for many years the largest and most revered in the Islamic world and the splendid furnishings of its interior make this building a veritable treasure trove. The historic splendour of Syria’s remarkable capital city really is like a Paradise On Earth.

Syria Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Syria.
Syria is an ancient country of culture located between the Mediterranean and the desert. Its ancient desert metropolises, old villages, impenetrable fortresses and biblical harbour towns have witnessed the rich and fascinating history of bygone times.Damascus is the capital of Syria and symbol of culture in the Near East and located a hundred kilometres from the Mediterranean coast. The Kalaa Citadel is situated on the periphery of the old town that was once surrounded by huge walls and it was from there that Saladin fended off the attacks of the Crusaders. The Khan As´Ad Pasha is often referred to as being the most beautiful caravansary in the Near East. Its inner courtyard is covered by eight mighty and partly painted cupolas each of which is supported by four pillars. Set amid the desert savannah of Syria are the proud remains of a unique and mysterious metropolis, Palmyra, a legendary ancient city that was built due to the existence of the Tadmur Oasis. The shortest and fastest route from the Mediterranean to Mesopotamia and Persia travels directly past the Tadmur Oasis thus it was only a question of time until an important trading post was founded there. Around a quarter of a million Bedouins live in Syria’s desert areas. They are nomads who speak Arabic and belong to the Muslim faith and their income is derived from sheep, goats and camels which produce both milk and meat. They travel the desert accompanied by their animals. Further north on the edge of the fertile Al Ghab Ditch is the ancient metropolis of Apameia, one of the most beautiful cities in the Near East. Apart from Bosra and Palmyra this huge city of ruins is one of the most important Hellenist regions in Syria. Syria is the Pearl Of The East. With deserts, wadis and mountains, castles and crusader fortresses, Roman ruins, palaces and mosques. A legendary country between both past and future whose cultural treasures still survive today.

Syria's capital of Damascus is widely considered as the oldest continuously inhabited city on earth, with evidence of habitation dating back (at least) 11,000 years. For all you math wizards out there, that's about 10,000 B.C.!
This is largely due to the unique positioning of the city -- in the heart of the Middle East, in the center of the world and at the intersection of 3 continents. Damascus was conquered by Alexander the Great in 333 BCE, and since then, it's been taken over by dozens of empires such as Roman, Arab and Ottoman.
I have spent the first few days of my trip in Syria in this amazing city, and I'm loving it so much that I wanted to dedicate an entire video to show you what it's like to visit.
One thing that I didn't mention much in the video is about how SAFE it is in Damascus. I can't speak yet for the rest of Syria, but as far as this city goes (in this current day), I feel extremely safe just like I do in any other big city around the world.

THE WAIT IS OVER AND I'M BEYOND EXCITED TO TELL YOU ABOUT THE LAST 2 WEEKS OF MY LIFE IN SYRIA - COUNTRY #183!
It was honestly the most inspiring and life-changing trip I've taken so far. I am so overwhelmed by the amazing people who welcomed me here -- you won't believe the stories that I'm about to share with you.
Ever since war began in Syria 2011, the media has ripped this country into pieces (not surprisingly) -- so I am going to do my best to show you the positive sides about Syrian people, culture, food and general life -- because trust me, there are A LOT of positives that are yet to be exposed to the outside world.
Can you guys sense how excited I am as I type this right now? It's unbelievable what I am feeling right now.
This first video is somewhat of an overview of everything I did in Syria. You can consider it as a 'teaser' for what's to come. I will be uploading daily videos as usual, but please note they will be delayed 14 days as I decided not to post live for safety reasons and so I could fully enjoy the trip without feeling pressure to upload.
I HOPE YOU ENJOY THESE SYRIA VIDEOS and please comment below with thoughts/comments/opinions about travel in Syria and I'll do my best to get back to you.

ALEPPO, SYRIA | What's It Like to Be a Tourist in ALEPPO in 2019?
Travelling to Aleppo was one of the toughest travel experiences I've had. The city and the people who call it home have gone through a nightmare in recent years.
I'm very lucky to have been able to visit Aleppo as an independent, foreign traveller and I hope that this video can convey some of what I experienced there, from my personal perspective.

My camera had an issue with it during this trip, so I apologise for the constant shaking. And before you comment on the Fairouz soundtrack (yes, she's Lebanese, not Syrian), the reason I chose her is because she is extremely popular in Damascus - you hear her songs on almost every street in old Damascus. Also, I'm pretty sure the song was recorded in Damascus.

Damascus Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Damascus in Syria.
Damascus is the capital of Syria and is a symbol of culture in the Near East. A hundred kilometres from the Mediterranean coast, the strategically located city was once the capital of the Umayyad.Cannons, the busts of various presidents and military vehicles are displayed in the large courtyard of the Takiyeh Mosque, an ancient Dervish monastery complex. Built in 1554 and designed by Ottoman master architect, Sinan, it also includes an adjoining inn for the numerous pilgrims who travelled to Mecca. Damascus has always been much prized: by the pharaohs and the Babylonian monarch, Nebukadnezar, and later, Alexander The Great. Then came Persian, Roman and Islamic emperors followed by the Crusaders and Mongols. The Kalaa Citadel is situated on the periphery of the old town that was once surrounded by huge walls. It was from here that Saladin fended off the attacks of the Crusaders. The Romans built a fort here that was constantly extended with impressive walls and towers and located directly outside the city wall, the River Barada was also of strategic importance. Although the Mongols destroyed the inner buildings, the fortress walls survived. The Suq is an important part of every Islamic city, a market that originated in ancient times. Thousands of shops in numerous interconnected lanes form the commercial heart of Damascus. In the Gold Suq everything glitters, bracelets, rings and even a large variety of kitchen utensils. Damascus has for thousands of years been a place desired by the powerful. Yet it has managed to survive and is still the most beautiful capital city in the Near East.

Damascus: Damascus is the capital of Syria; it is also the countrys largest city, following the decline in population of Aleppo due to the battle for the city. It is colloquially known in Syria as aš-Šām and titled the City of Jasmine. Damascus is a major cultural center of the Levant and the Arab world. The city has an estimated population of 1,711,000 as of 2009. Located in south-western Syria, Damascus is the center of a large metropolitan area of 2.7 million people. Geographically embedded on the eastern foothills of the Anti-Lebanon mountain range 80 kilometres inland from the eastern shore of the Mediterranean on a plateau 680 metres above sea level, Damascus experiences a semi-arid climate because of the rain shadow effect. The Barada River flows through Damascus. First settled in the second millennium BC, it was chosen as the capital of the Umayyad Caliphate from 661 to 750. After the victory of the Abbasid dynasty, the seat of Islamic power was moved to Baghdad. Damascus saw a political decline throughout the Abbasid era, only to regain significant importance in the Ayyubid and Mamluk periods. Today, it is the seat of the central government and all of the government ministries. [wikipedia // Google]
