Dynamic award winning artist Benon Lutaaya (Uganda) shares his thoughts with us
Born in Uganda, Benon Lutaaya is a Johannesburg-based visual artist working in a distinct and ever-evolving mixed-media style. He holds a BFA with Education from Kyambogo University, Kampala. Although known for his contemporary paper collage portraiture work, his technique is constantly evolving.
ART AFRICA visited Lutaaya in his studio at August House in Doornfontein to talk about his journey as an artist, how art can address social issues and the importance of building a comprehensive profile.

Francois Knoetze Performance Collaboration with Joshua Kagimu alias RapPoet at Nafasi ArtSpace
Born in Cape Town in 1989, Francois Knoetze is a performance artist, sculptor and filmmaker. He holds a BA Fine Arts degree from Rhodes University and an MFA from Michaelis School of Fine Art, UCT.
Knoetze retraces the life cycles of discarded objects and explores junctures between material and social histories. In his Mongo* sculptural suits, the synthetic is welded to the human – bringing focus to the objectification of persons, through the personification of objects.
In 2015 Knoetze featured as one of Mail & Guardian’s ‘Top 200 Young South Africans’. His series Cape Mongo formed part of the Grahamstown National Arts Festival Main Programme in 2015 and the Global Graduate Programme at Design Indaba 2016. He has participated in group exhibitions, such as U/Tropia at the Wiener Festwochen in Germany (2015), Slow Violence at the University of Stellenbosch Art Gallery (2015) and Designing Futures at the Lagos Photo Festival (2015).
His work has also been shown at a number of local and international film festivals, including the WNDX Festival of Moving Image 2015 (winner of the Jury Prize for Best International Work), the 17th Paris Festival for Different and Experimental Cinema, Artvideo Koeln: Audiovisual Experiences in Cologne (2015), the inaugural Addis Video Art Festival (2015), the 32nd Kassel Documentary and Video Festival in Germany (2015), Usurp Zone5 Film Festival at the Usurp Art Gallery & Studio in London (2015), the FILMIDEO International Film Festival at the Index Art Center in Newark, New Jersey (2015) andOK.Video Film Festival in Indonesia (2015).
In 2016 he was chosen as one of Africa Centre’s Artist In Residence Laureates, and spent two months at the Nafasi Art Center in Dar es Salaam,Tanzania, creating his latest work The Great Circle.

Joshua Kagimu(RapPoet), B. 1992 in Kampala, is a visual artist who experiments with painting, performance, video and installation. He has participated in group exhibitions; AtWork (2015) at Makerere University Gallery, The Boda Boda Project (2014) during KLA ART 014: Kampala Contemporary Art Festival, LaBa Street Art Festival (2014), Bayimba International Festival (2013) and (2015), Ankarah Fashion Show (2012) and Uzima Initiative (2012). He has also undertaken a residency at 32° East | Ugandan Arts Trust, his prize for winning the KLA ART 014 Audience

Véronique Marrier managed 90_degrés from 1996 to 2000, the first gallery dedicated to graphic design in France, located in Bordeaux. She co-founded the trade union for designers: Alliance française des designers and contributed to F7 that organized from 2003 to 2010 graphic designers talks in Paris: Stefan Sagmeister, Peter Saville, Jonathan Barnbrook, Jost Hochuli, Experimental Jetset, Norm…
In 2003, she worked for the Festival international de l’affiche et du graphisme in Chaumont and particularly the M/M (Paris) exhibition. From 2003, she started to collaborate with the Ministère de la Culture et de la Communication for the yearly publication Graphisme en France. In 2006, she was involved in the organization Mois du graphisme, in Échirolles. Since 2008, she is the project manager for graphic design at the Centre national des arts plastiques (CNAP) and the editorial manager of Graphisme en France. She is in charge of State commissions and develop the purchase of graphic design pieces for the CNAP collection. Véronique Marrier was the co-curator of special one year event, Graphisme en France 2014, launched for the 20th anniversary of the publication.

For many years, the Centre national des arts plastiques has been supporting graphic design through a wide range of projects: grants, commissions, purchases for the State collection and publications. The event “Graphisme en France 2014” took place last year for the 20th anniversary of the publication Graphisme en France. The aim was to promote all over France graphic design through its network. Various projects were also produced by the Cnap: the publication of a Guide of the graphic design commission, a graphic design teaching kit for high schools, a public commission of a typeface and an international symposium about History of graphic design.
