Detour: Southern Africa by Bicycle
In April 2016 I began a solo, self-supported bicycle tour of the southern portion of the African continent. The trip spanned 4 months, 6 countries, and 5,857 miles. This film documents that journey.
Expeditions like this begin twice. They first arise in the imagination. Months or years later, they begin a second time in a very practical and visceral way with the first pedal stroke. For me, this second start occurred in a small village in Eastern Province, Zambia where I had served as a Peace Corps Volunteer for two years. Leaving this small village, my route meandered across the continent, ending in Capetown, South Africa (link to route:
Over the course of my ride, I went through three courses of antibiotics, one course of de-wormer, a 4oz container of Dr. Bronners soap, two tires, an ungodly number of calories, and miraculously- no punctures. I covered on average 100.26 kilometers (62.3 miles) per day of cycling. Out of 130 nights on the road, I spent three sleeping in a bed. The rest of the nights were spent camping in my one-person tent. All-in-all I spent exactly $1,170 USD. This includes all food, visa fees, accommodation, and bicycle parts. Averaged out over the full trip, that comes out to $9 USD per day, with 5.79 of those daily dollars going towards food.
Not only did I spend very little money during the expedition, I also spent very little money preparing for the expedition. I bought an old second hand Trek hard tail mountain bike for around $200 USD and re-built it from the frame up. I then drew up some sketches of front and rear pannier racks and worked with some local Zambian welders (paying $15 USD) to make them out of the only material available- 10mm rebar- which was strong, but also incredibly heavy. The welders also helped me build two extra-large water bottle cages ($5 USD) that each held a two liter bottle. Then I spent a solid two weeks making panniers ($9 USD) out of old plastic water jugs, an old slack line, and the zippers and buckles from a chewed-up backpack (link to equipment photos: All the other bike specific equipment (tools, spare parts, bike shorts, odometer, etc.) probably came out to around $110 USD. If you don’t count all the backpacking equipment I already owned, the total equipment cost for the trip was under $350 USD.

THE ROUGHEST MOUNTAIN BIKE TRAIL IN AFRICA? | Bike Breaking Enduro Trail
Time to step it up.
This is the longest, roughest & most tiring stage of the day. This is also the stage which filters out the weak, whether it be rider, bike or components. The fall out rate is around 30 - 40% on this stage & only around 60% of the riders were able to make it to the next stage.
This track is an unofficial course on the farm used mainly for moto enduro, training riders for the Roof Of Africa event.
Sit Back and enjoy the fun as I attempt to conquer this beast of a trail.

Riverwild 4x4 Trail
The Riverwild 4x4 Trail is one of the leading off-road experiences in South Africa. The trail is driven by participants in their own vehicles and have different sections with a variety of challenging natural obstacles, each with its own character and each offering varying degrees of difficulty, including river crossings, mud sections, steep ascents and descents and plenty of rocky areas. For those who do not want to participate in the extreme sections, it is possible to take a detour.

Cycling South Africa: A Hundred Mile Trek
Cycled from East London, over to Morgan Bay, and then up to Butterworth in order to catch a bus to Durban. The hundred miles I did along the South African coast were harder than all of the thousand miles I did across Europe combined, but it was the most scenic, most moving, and most beautiful country that I've ridden through. What I regretfully didn't film was some of the extremely washed out roads, more of the villages, and the group of kids that came running out of their home to see the foreigner pedalling by on his fully-loaded bike (in the rain)! That being said, it was more of a choice not to film in the villages or people as they weren't on display; they were folks just going about their lives and I didn't want to intrude like some slacked jawed yutz with a camera.
And because it was asked a lot: No. I never felt like I was in danger. I know South Africa has a rep for crime, but, in my personal experience, everyone was friendly and the time I spent- even in areas that some had talked about and warned about- was fine and I look forward to cycling there more in the future!

The Kingdom Of Lesotho | We Found the Horsemen
Not only is Lesotho unique because it Is one of only 3 countries that are completely enclaved by another (Lesotho enclaved by South Africa), but the trails are of the most natural, raw & wild I have ever ridden.
The area we were based (Mokhotlong) reminded me of the old western movies I would watch when I was young on the old tube driven television sets. During the next few weeks I will be feeling like Clint Eastwood on a steed of overly priced materials and wheels of thunder & fun.
This trip was put together by Detour Trails.
Rohan & his team of genies are based in Durban & put many of these well priced, all included trips together per year. It is an experience of a lifetime and worth every penny.

Extreme 1000 Enduro 2018
KZN Extreme1000 the Finale of the 6 round Powasol Regional Extreme Enduro Series.
Set up at the Hillcrest Paintball arena in Bothas Hill. The Valley of 1000 Hills some argue the best riding in SA. We will say it comes close the Matatiele but it’s most certainly the best riding in KWAZULU NATAL.
109 riders from KZN, JHB, Free State, Pretoria and Zambia lined up to take on the iconic event. The last of the KZN Regional Championship.
Terrain for the adventurous, tough, Roof Ready and the Weekend Wobblers just rocking up to support the last local event of 2018.
