Biking Detroit Belle Isle
Biking Belle Isle
Detroit, MI
Biking around the east end of Belle Isle the week after the Grand Prix was on Belle Isle
The statue ahead is of Major General Alpheus Starkey Williams who had a distinguished military career as lieutenant colonel of the first Michigan Infantry in the Mexican War, later appointed to brigadier general of volunteers by Lincoln, then commander of Twelfth Corps at the battles of South Mountain, Antietam, and Gettysburg, as well as Sherman's campaigns in I864-1865. He was elected to Congress in 1874 and died in 1878 before the expiration of his second term. The monument was unveiled in 1921.
To the right here is the Old Horse Barn designed in 1894 by George Mason for the working horses on the island. From the early 1900’s until 1928 it was the location of the Detroit Zoo. It is currently being used for island maintenance and storage.
The Belle Isle Athletic Pavilion (built in 1898) and tennis courts.
This side of the island (facing Windsor) is also a great place to watch the large freighters that pass by frequently.
To the right here is a U.S. Coast Guard station.
There is incredible fishing for silver bass in the lagoon to the right!
The Belle Isle Zoo is on left and the golf range a little further on the right
The Detroit Yacht Club on the right.
Belle Isle beach on right.
Great views of the Detroit riverfront from this side of the island.
There are many picnic pavilions and restrooms on the island.
The Dossin Great Lakes Museum ahead on the left.
The Seahorses were my favorite in the aquarium.
The Conservatory is amazing!!

Iron Horsemen vs. Detroit Highwaymen
CINCINNATI (Rich Jaffe) -- Cincinnati police as well as other law enforcement agencies promise to put an end to an increasingly violent turf war between what they are now calling two biker gangs.Cincinnati Police Sergeant Bill Halusek says, With the gun violence involved as well, it's to the point it's out of control and we're gonna do something about it. Clashes between the Iron Horsemen and the Detroit Highwaymen have been increasing over the last couple of years. Ever since the Highwaymen set up shop in what for years has been recognized in the motorcycle community as the turf of the Iron Horsemen. But in just the last few days that violence has taken a new turn, and law enforcement says they've had enough and are going to stop it. Monday at this point we were talking about an attack early Saturday morning at the Iron Horsemen's clubhouse in Covington. Multiple shots were fired there, and investigators say something akin to a molotov cocktail was thrown at the house. Tuesday we obtained surveillance video of the attacks that may have lead to that and police want your help to stop it before someone dies. The attacks began last Wednesday night just outside the Detroit Highwaymen's clubhouse at 8th and State in Lower Price Hill. It was around 11 o'clock when Iron Horsemen on two motorcycles rolled past and stopped. Cincinnati Police Sergeant Bill Halusek explained what we were watching in the surveillance video. They stop at the red light and for whatever reason, Detroit Highwaymen gang members come out remove one of them from his motorcycle and steal his motorcycle. Moments later the Highwaymen roll the motorcycle into their clubhouse. Less than an hour later a group of Iron Horsemen rendezvous just up the street at the Shell gas station and apparently work out a battle plan. Police want the public's help identifying two men in particular who's faces can be clearly seen inside the Shell station. They also want to know who owns the big Ford Duelly truck seen in the video. The group piles into their vehicles and heads to confront their rivals just down the street. Initially there's shouting with the Highwaymen in front of the clubhouse. Then Highwaymen run for cover when police say the Horsemen open fire. Halusek tells us, I won't legitimize them by calling them a club. They're a gang. When you look at the Ohio Revised Code and what a gang is these groups meet the definition to a T. They are why that section of law was written.Saturday morning the violence shifted to the Iron Horsemen's Covington clubhouse. Cincinnati police say the violence is out of control and law enforcement is going to do something about it. They're putting both gangs on the list of targets for their initiative to reduce violence. Sergeant Halusek said, We are not gonna tolerate it. That we will marshal every resource we have to end the gun violence. They've made themselves targets of ours now. They are big blips on our radar screen. Sergeant Halusek points out that multiple felonies were committed during the attacks on the Iron Horsemen. The theft of the motorcycle was also a felony. But he says the Iron Horsemen also committed felony offenses when they came back and fired at an occupied building. The question for everyone is what happens next? Police need the public's help identifying both the big, dark colored Ford Duelly. It's believed to be an F-450 and the two men on the video. What is GREAT LAKES WATERWAY? What does GREAT LAKES WATERWAY mean? GREAT LAKES WATERWAY meaning - GREAT LAKES WATERWAY definition - GREAT LAKES WATERWAY explanation.
Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under license.
The Great Lakes Waterway is a system of natural channels and canals which enable navigation between the North American Great Lakes. Though all of the lakes are naturally connected as a chain, water travel between the lakes was impeded for centuries by obstacles such as Niagara Falls and the rapids of the St. Marys River.
Its principal civil engineering works are the Welland Canal between Lakes Ontario and Erie, and the huge Soo Locks between Huron and Superior. Dredged channels were constructed in the St. Marys River, the Detroit River, Lake St. Clair and the St. Clair River between Huron and Erie. Usually, one or more U.S. Coast Guard icebreakers help keep the water passage open for part of the fall and early winter, although shipping usually ceases for two to three months thereafter. The Great Lakes Waterway is co-administered by the governments of Canada and the United States of America.
The waterway allows passage from the Atlantic Ocean to the inland port of Duluth on Lake Superior, a distance of 2,340 miles (3,770 km) and to Chicago, on Lake Michigan, at 2,250 miles (3,620 km).
Together with the Saint Lawrence Seaway, the Waterway allows both ocean-going vessels and the ore and coal-bearing lake freighters to travel from the system's saltwater outlet to its far interior. The Waterway has larger locks and deeper drafts than the lower Seaway, limiting large freighters to the four lakes upstream of the Welland Canal and Lake Ontario, and similarly restricting passage beyond the canal by larger ocean vessels. The two waterways are often jointly and simply referred to as the St. Lawrence Seaway, since the Great Lakes, together with the St. Lawrence River, comprise a single navigable body of freshwater linking the Atlantic Ocean to the continental interior.
Shipping channels separate upbound traffic from downbound traffic. The upbound direction is away from the St. Lawrence River (westerly or northerly except in Lake Michigan where upbound is southerly). Channels are marked with navigation buoys in constricted areas and pilots are required on foreign boats. Recreational boats can use or cross the ship channels, but the large boats, with limited maneuverability, have right of way.

An entirely new form of transportation for U.S. consumers, the Quadski Amphibious vehicle is capable of reaching speeds of 45 mph on both land and water and transitions between both in five seconds or less.
Introduced at a Gibbs Sports Amphibian press conference in Detroit by Alan Gibbs, the company’s founder, and Neil Jenkins, its chairman, the Quadski Amphibious vehicle is equipped with a 175-horsepower BMW Motorrad engine and transmission. With the press of a button, its wheels retract when entering the water and deploy when approaching land.
Jenkins told reporters in Detroit that Quadski will retail for about $40,000 when introduced in November. The company expects to have more than 20 Gibbs dealership locations US in place within the next 12 months, primarily in the Midwest, New York, Texas and the southeastern United States.
The Amphibious vehicle GIBBS amphibian weighs 1,300 pounds, is equipped with a 15-gallon fuel tank and will be available in five colors – red, yellow, blue, silver and black. Suggested retail pricing and details about GIBBS’ dealer network will be announced prior to public introduction in mid November.
“Quadski represents an investment of more than $200-million and two-million man hours of work over a period of 15 years,” said Alan Gibbs. “With the introduction of Quadski next month, our dream of providing high-speed amphibian transportation to consumers will become a reality.”
GIBBS has more than 300 patents and patents pending on its High Speed Amphibian (HSA) technology for consumer, commercial and first-responder use.
An amphibious all-terrain vehicle (AATV) is a small off-road, and typically six-wheel drive, amphibious vehicle. Amphibious vehicles were developed in the early 1960s and quickly became popular in both the US and Canada. These Amphibious vehicles are now used by enthusiasts and professionals worldwide for recreation and industry.
These Amphibious vehicles earned their own classification - all-terrain vehicle (ATV).[1] However, after the introduction of small three- and four-wheeled off-road motorcycles in the 1970s and 1980s, these have become better known as ATVs than the original amphibious ones.
Although amphibious ATVs aren't widely known today, they can be found everywhere from a farm to the oil fields. Modern Amphibious vehicle are used for industrial applications due to their capabilities that traditional off-road vehicles don't have. Other uses for these Amphibious vehicle machines are recreation, such as trail riding or exploration.
Current Amphibious vehicle 2015 brands of these machines include:
Lite Technologies, manufacturer of hydraulically driven 8x8 and tracked AATV Amphibious vehicle
ZZGT, manufacturer of tracked AATVs in Russia (Amphibious vehicle models crawler transporter: ZZ-3, ZZ-4, ZZ-5, ZZ-25, ZZ-28)
ARGO, manufacturer of 6x6 and 8x8 Amphibious vehicle models
HydroTraxx, fully hydraulic drive 6x6 Amphibious vehicle
Land Tamer, steel or aluminium hull heavy duty 6x6 Amphibious vehicle or 8x8
MAX, producing several 6x6 models (now owned by Mudd-Ox Amphibious vehicle)
Gibbs Technologies, makes the Quadski Amphibious vehicle with Performance similar to a jetski
Terra Jet, manufacturer of 4X4 Amphibious vehicle and 6X6 sport and utility Amphibious vehicle models featuring front wheel steering
XIBEIHU, manufacturer of Amphibious vehicle.
WildPanther, manufacturer of Amphibious vehicle.
Mudd-Ox, manufacturer of hydraulically driven 8x8 Amphibious vehicles
An amphibious vehicle (or simply amphibian), is a vehicle that is a means of transport, viable on land as well as on (or under) water. Amphibious vehicles include amphibious bicycles, ATVs, cars, buses, trucks, military vehicles, and hovercraft.
Classic landing craft are not amphibious vehicles as they do not offer any real land transportation at all, although they are part of amphibious assault. Ground effect vehicles, such as Ekranoplans, will likely crash on any but the flattest of landmasses so are also not considered to be amphibious vehicles.

TOP 10 DON’TS WHEN CROSSING THE US AND CANADA BORDER
416-962-2623 / 1-866-760-2623
immigroup.com
TOP 10 DON’TS WHEN CROSSING THE US AND CANADA BORDER
1. SHUT UP! PART 1.DON’T TRY TO BE FUNNY.
Border guards are not your friends, and it’s highly unlikely that they moonlight as talent scouts for comedy clubs. This is the wrong moment to make a buddy or tell jokes. Stay respectful and succinct and save the complaints for the drive away from the checkpoint.
2. SHUT UP! PART 2. DON’T DISCLOSE MORE THAN YOU’RE ASKED.
Answer all of the guard’s questions, but avoid getting chatty about your plans if you don’t have to. Thinking of catching up on some work on your laptop a little during your vacation, for example? Don’t mention that. There is no such thing as an American working holiday visa, although there are plenty of options for working holidays in Canada, or for Canadians travelling to other parts of the world. If you’re going to the U.S, however, best to say that your laptop is just for fantasy sports and YouTube. Planning a trip to propose to your girlfriend? Congratulations. But...
3. EVEN YOUR SEX LIFE MATTERS.DON’T MENTION THAT YOU’RE PLANNING TO MARRY A CITIZEN OR RESIDENT OF ANOTHER COUNTRY WHEN YOU’RE ENTERING IT.
Even if you’re in the middle of the appropriate application process, talking about your romantic attachments will not warm the hearts of the border guards and it will get you flagged as a potential risk for illegal immigration. This goes for crossing the US and Canadian border in either direction. Say that you’re visiting “a friend” and save the flaunting of your ring for the day when you’re married or your citizenship and residency information is fully settled.
4. DEVELOP A “CREATIVE VOCABULARY.”DON’T BE IN A RUSH TO EXPLAIN EVERY DETAIL ABOUT THE GOODS YOU’RE BRINGING WITH YOU, BUT KNOW THE RISKS OF INCOMPLETE DISCLOSURE
It can be mighty tempting to try to bring a few extra items back from your trip without declaring them. You can push the limits of the personal exemption (see above for the exact amounts), or you can declare the extras and pay the duties. If you’re pushing it, try to describe dollar values using words like “approximately,” “about,” or “around” if you’re just above the personal exemption limits. Remove the tags, and ditch the shopping bags and receipts. If you are searched and the agents find something that you haven’t declared, it’s most likely that you’ll be delayed and that you’ll have to pay the duty. Hey, people forget the things they buy all the time, right? Mistakes can happen. If you push it too far, however, and you get caught making a false declaration crossing to Canada, you might also have your goods seized or you might have to pay a penalty that’s an extra 25-80% of the goods’ value. The worst case scenario is that you’ll lose the goods permanently and have your vehicle impounded. You’ll also almost certainly find yourself subject to more intense scrutiny at future crossings. Getting caught with small amounts over the limit shouldn’t have lasting repercussions, unless you’re busted repeatedly. Now you know the risks. Govern yourself accordingly. Bonus tip: Never try to conceal anything you just bought at the duty-free shop. They take your name and license plate number and their database is coordinated with the border guards on each side, so lying in this case makes for a guaranteed delay. Don’t do it.
5. A CRIMINAL MIND, IT’S ALL I’VE EVER KNOWN.DON’T LIE ABOUT YOUR CRIMINAL PAST.
If you have run into legal trouble, check to see if it’s serious enough to prevent you from travelling. Each country has its own regulations on this, and most countries reserve the right to deny anyone the right to entry for any reason. If you are denied entry crossing from Canada to US, consider applying for a US Entry Waiver. If you are worried you can’t enter Canada from the US, consider getting a temporary resident permit. The process rules and process for both the US Entry Waiver and the TRP can be complicated and difficult, so you can always seek help.
