My Day 6 in Iceland.
Greeted with a stunning mountainous view of Seydisfjordur from my window.
Today I visited the Awesome Lava Caves, experience the strongest winds I ever had in Iceland, stopping ever so often for the spectecular ladnscape along the way and witnessingthe awesome power of the Godafoss. It was an emotional roller coastal drive !

Iceland - Dettifoss, Mývatn a Akureyri
The Dettifoss waterfall is with the greatest volume of any waterfall in Europe, 500 cubic metres of water per second plunges over the edge. Dettifoss is 45 m high and 100m wide.
Mývatn is a shallow eutrophic lake situated in an area of active volcanism in the north of Iceland, not far from Krafla volcano. The lake and its surrounding wetlands have an exceptionally rich fauna of waterbirds, especially ducks. The lake was created by a large basaltic lava eruption 2300 years ago, and the surrounding landscape is dominated by volcanic landforms, including lava pillars and rootless vennts. The effluent river Laxá is known for its rich fishing for brown trout and Atlantic salmon.

Iceland Road Trip Part II - featuring Dettifoss, Hverarönd, Mývatn and more!
Three lads from the UK take on Iceland! This is the second in a three-part series that begins with us leaving the Viking Café to head north along the east coast.
On the way we pass by the Flögufoss waterfall, then head west into the island. We stop by the Bokakaffi Hlodum café before heading onwards to Dettifoss and Hverarönd, finally spending the night by the side of Lake Mývatn.
The fourth day sees the crew hitting the Mývatn Nature Baths, and then proceeding to Húsavík for some whale watching aboard the Bjössi Sör. We camp at the Sæberg Hostel and enjoy some local beers as the sun sets.

ICELAND: Námafjall & Mývatn

Námafjall is a high-temperature geothermal area with fumaroles and boiling mud pools. At a depth of 1000 meters the temperature is above 200 degrees C. As is characteristic for other hot spring areas
there is a hot spring smell at Námafjall which is caused by the steam and the fumarole gas, such as hydrogen sulfide.

Exploring Dettifoss and Selfoss Waterfalls in Northeast Iceland!
During our road trip around the Ring Road in Iceland, we stopped at the spectacular waterfalls of Dettifoss and Selfoss. Join us as we adventure around these magnificent and powerful waterfalls!

Where are Dettifoss and Selfoss Waterfalls located?
Dettifoss and Selfoss are located near each other. They are located 78 km/48 mi east of Lake Myvatn and 169 km/105 mi east of Iceland’s “Capital of the North”, Akureyri. They are approximately 25-30 km north of the Ring Road/Route 1.
How do you get to Dettifoss and Selfoss Waterfalls?
Both waterfalls can be viewed from the east or west sides of Jokulsa river. To access the east side from the Ring Road/Route 1, turn north onto Road 864. To access the west side from the Ring Road/Route 1, turn north onto Road 862. Note these roads are highly subject to closure. When we visited in June, Road 864 was closed.
Should you visit the east or west side of the river to see Dettifoss and Selfoss Waterfalls?
If you have the time and both roads are open, do both. They provide completely different views. Road 864 was closed when we visited so we were unable to view the falls from that side but based on ZigZagOnEarth, from the east side you get a full view of the height of Dettifoss but it is a more difficult hike to Selfoss. From the west side, the hikes to both of the waterfalls are easy. There are many different viewing points at Dettifoss but not as many for Selfoss. This side of the river, allows you to see the entire width of Dettifoss but not the height.
How long does it take to tour Dettifoss and Selfoss Waterfalls?
At the west side of the river, we recommend 1-2 hours.
When can you visit Dettifoss and Selfoss Waterfalls?
Year round! Be sure to check the local weather for storms and road closures. The hiking paths get slippery and dangerous when wet!
How big is Dettifoss Waterfall?
Dettifoss Waterfall is 45 meters/148 feet high and 100 meters/328 feet wide. 500 cubic meters/132,086 gallons of water per second plunges over the edge.
How big is Selfoss Waterfall?
Selfoss Waterfall is 11 meters/36 feet high and 366 meters/1,200 feet wide.
How much does it cost?
Free! Parking is free too!
Can you swim in the waterfalls?
Absolutely not! They are way too powerful. Check them out in the video above!
What should you bring on the hike?
Layers, Hiking Shoes, Raincoat / Poncho / Umbrella, Water, Sunscreen, Camera, Hiking poles, if needed
2T2T TIPS
Suggest waterproof/hiking shoes because the hike there is a little rocky and in some areas, you may have to step in water. Iceland weather is ever changing, so wear layers and always bring rain protection.

Dettifoss is the most powerful waterfall in all of Europe. Powerful and impressive with beautiful rainbows on a sunny day. Dettifoss is a must do during Iceland travel. These falls are part of the Vatnajökull National Park in Northeast Iceland. It's part of the Diamond Circle, a popular tourist route around Húsavík and Lake Mývatn in North Iceland. It's also part of Iceland Golden circle. In winter this area attracts a lot of tourists to see northern lights. You first get to walk through lava fields and then you get to see this amazing waterfall. Iceland travel in unforgettable.

Myvatn lake : north Iceland ( famous lake of fies ) - Drone Iceland
One of the main attractions of the north is famous lake Myvatn, located at a distance of about 55 kilometers south of the town of Husavik. It is also the fourth largest lake in Iceland, a place that you must see.
Its name (isl. my - the mosquito or fly + Vatn - lake) means lake flies which almost perfectly reflects the character of this place. Ubiquitous near the lake insects can drive a man to despair. If you're going to admire these beautiful lands you must obtain a special protective nets worn over the head. It can be purchased on nearby petrol stations.
The lake was created about 35,000 years ago, it covers its surface area thirty-seven kilometers square. The average depth of the lake is 2.5 meters and the deepest point reaches up to four and a half meters. The water in the lake is rich in minerals and algae, which means that it takes blue-green hues. The transparency of the water allows you to see the rich vegetation and fish among the seaweed. Surface of a lake is filled with dozens of small islands and the coast grow pseudo-craters called Skútustaðagígar formed during the explosion gases. In 1974. The area around the lake has been strictly protected, and these pseudo-craters were considered monuments.
Interestingly is that, the water in the lake never freezes completely, despite the fact that it is located just 100 kilometers from the Arctic Circle. This is due to the nearby active volcanoes, geothermal and lava fields.
Myvatn is an ideal place for bird watching, Shores of the lake is home to many species of waterfowl. In summer you can meetings largest population of ducks, more than 16 different species, whose numbers even exceeds 150,000 individuals. In addition to ducks you can meet geese, białozory, whooper swans, curlews, snipe, golden plover and białorzytki and 76 other species that are turning out to be spot on. While migratory birds are represented here by nearly 240 different species. In winter you can see the whooper swans (Cygnus Cygnus)
From May 20 to July 20 on part of the land within the lake entry is prohibited, due to the breeding season of birds.
