Koblenz, Germany - German Corner (Deutsches Eck), emotional site -
The headland area of Germany where the Rhine River & the Moselle (Mosel) River converge is known as Deutsches Eck (German Corner). Located in Koblenz (aka Coblenz) it is a very impressive sight to behold, with sweeping views of both rivers, and a magnificent statue that dominates the scene. It is the equestrian statue of William I, first German Emperor; it was originally erected in 1897 in appreciation of his merits in the unification of Germany.
The original statue was destroyed during WWII, with this particular statue being a replica that was put in its place in 1993. In addition to being a historical area it is also has high emotional significance to the German people. Needless to say, it is also a highly popular visitor and tourist attraction. In the plaza, there are 16 flags flying, symbolizing the various German states.

The German corner is an artificially populated land in Koblenz at the mouth of the Moselle in the Rhine. In 1897 a monumental equestrian statue of the first German Emperor William I was erected here, which was conceived as a monument to the German Reichsgründung 1871. The Kaiser-Wilhelm-Denkmal, commissioned by the Rheinprovinz, stood in the tradition of many monuments erected between 1888 and 1918 in the German-speaking world.
The base of the statue, heavily damaged during the Second World War, served as a memorial to the German Unity from 1953 to 1990. A copy of the sculpture group was put back on the pedestal in 1993 after previous controversial discussions.
The German corner is the landmark of the city of Koblenz and a major attraction for tourists. On the left bank of the Rhine, the Rheinanlagen (Konrad-Adenauer-Ufer) branch off, on the right bank of the Moselle the Peter-Altmeier-Ufer.

Places to see in ( Koblenz - Germany ) Deutsches Eck
The establishment of the Teutonic Order at the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle in 1216 gave this historic site its name, the “Deutsches Eck” (“German Corner”). Koblenz also owes its name to the meeting point of the Rhine and the Moselle - from “Castellum apud Confluentes”, Latin for “fort at the confluence”, which over time became the current name of Koblenz.
Shortly after Kaiser Wilhelm I’s death, the idea arose of creating a memorial to him, as it was the Kaiser who had brought about the unification of Germany after three years of war. Three years later in 1891, Kaiser Wilhelm II, the grandson of the deceased, chose the Deutsches Eck in Koblenz as the most suitable location. A harbour of refuge in the Moselle estuary was filled in to create space for the memorial. The Deutsches Eck in its present form was created.
Deutsches Eck is the name of a headland in Koblenz, Germany, where the Mosel river joins the Rhine. Named after a local commandry of the Teutonic Order (Deutscher Orden), it became known for a monumental equestrian statue of William I, first German Emperor, erected in 1897 in appreciation of his merits in the unification of Germany. One of many Emperor William monuments raised in the Prussian Rhine Province, it was destroyed in World War II and only the plinth was preserved as a memorial. Following German reunification, a replica of the statue was erected on the pedestal after controversial discussions in 1993. It is today a Koblenz landmark and a popular tourist destination.

Adorable and Charming Town #3: Koblenz on the Rhine
It's not for nothing that millions of travelers begin or end a cruise on the Rhine in Koblenz, which owes its name to the Romans who constructed a castle here around 9BC.
Just another drop-dead adorable medieval town with good food, excellent wine, reasonably priced accommodation, and so much to see! Walk through the old town, parks; into museums, churches; bike and/or along the Deutsches Eck promenade on the Rhine and Mosel Rivers.
Koblenz: The German Corner
This German corner is found in Koblenz Germany and it is where the Rhine and the Moselle Rivers meet. This past Christmas we headed to Germany to visit some friends and on our last day, we stopped in Koblenz Germany to check out is beautiful intersection. While we were there we checked out the William I monument at Deutsches Eck. William was responsible for the unification of Germany which is why there is a statue of him where the two rivers meet. We also took the Koblenz Cable Car to the Fortress Ehrenbreitstein which is across the river from the statue.

Koblenz spelled Coblenz before 1926, is a German city situated on both banks of the Rhine where it is joined by the Moselle. Koblenz was established as a Roman military post by Drusus around 8 B.C. Its name originates in the Latin (ad) confluentes, meaning (at the) confluence of the two rivers. The actual confluence is today known as the German Corner, a symbol of German reunification that features an equestrian statue of Emperor William I. The city celebrated its 2000th anniversary in 1992.

Travel Germany - Visiting the German Corner of Koblenz
Take a tour of German Corner in Koblenz, Germany -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
In the scenic city of Koblenz, Germany is a striking promontory at the convergence of the major rivers, Rhine and Moselle.
The Deutsches Eck, or German Corner, displays the reconstructed statue of German Emperor Wilhelm I.
Architect Bruno Schmitz created the statue in 1897, celebrating the German Empire's re-foundation.
The statue has led a dramatic life, erected in 1897, then severely damaged in 1945 by American troops, and finally reconstructed in 1993 after much debate.
Because of the political turmoil of the mid 20th century, pieces of the Berlin Wall are now showcased to honor German re-unification.
Koblenz, a town over two thousand years old, hosts many historical structures, the German Corner being one of its most magnificent jewels.
