Devaraja market Mysore|മൈസൂരിലെ ദേവരാജ മാർക്കറ്റ് ❤❤|
Devaraja market is located on the Sayaji roadin Mysore. Its a very old market and they sell all kinds of agricultural produce and other stuff like bangles, artificial jewelry, etc. The place is pretty congested with series of small shops lined up on both sides of narrow alleys. Its relatively cleaner than some of the other markets I have seen in India. The place is very colourful especially with lots of flower vendors around. The fruit market is also very good.
What a delightful visual extravaganza of colors and sounds. Loved the pictures that came out, the hustle and bustle and the liveliness of the culture.
Devaraja Market Mysore | Mysore tourism Karnataka tourism
Deavaraja Market Mysore or devaraj urs market is a Mysore heritage market part of Mysore tourism Karnataka tourism.Devaraja Market or mysore vegetable market is 130-year-old and is a famous shopping center in Mysore. The History of Devaraja Market dates way back to the days when it was a small weekly market at the corner of this mohalla (village). Later during the regime of Chamaraja Wodeyar IX (1868 - 1894) this weekly market was expanded into the present form. The market retained the name that is associated with the village. The road that runs through this this market is Devaraj Urs Road.
Construction of the structure of the market is housed in today began in the 1900s and advanced in stages through the years during the reign of Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar. It was named after erstwhile Maharaja Dodda Devaraja Wodeyar.
The market was designed with individual sections dedicated to different types of products. For example, one section of the market is dedicated to fresh flowers while another deals solely puja materials.Today, the market has over 800 shops and is spread over 3 acres of land.
There is no clear documentary evidence on when exactly the Devaraja Market was built and hence some of the historians point to the time when Viceroy Lord Dufferin visited Mysore and in his name the Dufferin Clock Tower (Chikka Gadiyara) came up in the late 1880s by the time which the Market had already existed. It is also said that it is built on a canal or lake.
The Market is unique in many respects as this is considered one of the first super markets in the country with everything available from pins to groceries, fruits, vegetables and all other household items under one roof. Also since the beginning Devaraja market is known to have been a symbol of peace as people of all gender, caste, creed, religion etc carry out their business all under one roof with out any kind of discrimination.
Other prominent sections of the market include the sections for vegetables, fruits, jaggery, onions and potatoes, puffed rice and coconut. There are 5 main entrances to the market; one on Dhanvanthri Road in the south, one opposite Dufferin Clock Tower in the north and three entrances to the middle of the market on the Sayyaji Rao Road and few more small entrances. Shops are arranged along three aisles that run through the length of the market.
The outer perimeter is taken up by regular establishments, among which are a couple of sweet shops specializing in the famous Mysore Pak.
“The design of the typical character of a Market was influenced by the Britishers and even the Maharajas of Mysore followed this idea. Hence, we see the more formal rows of shops outside the Market facing the main roads while the informal shandy atmosphere prevails inside,

Devaraja Market - the Unique Heritage Market in Mysore | The Vibrant Devaraja Market in Mysore
Located in the central and old part of Mysore, Devaraja Market supposedly goes back a few centuries. From the time of Tipu Sultan, a market in some form is believed to have existed here. Long and rectangular in structure, this market is a covered one. It is noisy, vibrant, colourful and seems to buzz with organised chaos. Though there are many entrances, the main ones are located at either end. As you enter, you will be assaulted by the combined fragrances of vegetables, fruits and flowers, each of which occupies a specific section. It is fascinating to see spirals of lush green betel leaves and strings of colorful flowers, which are interspersed with shops selling incense sticks, household articles, mounds of turmeric and vermilion, and souvenirs. There is no concept of 'cold storage' here. Everything is raw, straight from the farm to the market to the homes.Traders in the market buy at wholesale rate, typically for the day's sales, especially the perishable items. Retail rates varies every day, and some times even during the day. It seams the 'discount' starts by the closing hours, with the intention of disposing of all the day's stock. Business continues for many hours well after sunset. Prices shoots up dramatically during the festive seasons, especially for flowers and fruits, that is in high demand during the period. Mornings and evenings are peak business hours with feverish shopping activities. So are the weekends and the days preceding the festivals. The conservative estimates put the age of the Devaraja market about 120 years. The original market place could be much older, as old at the origin of this city as settlement. The place were people lived in this part of Mysore was called Devaraja Mohalla, named afer one of the two successive maharajas shared the same name (ie, Dodda Devaraja Wodeyar (1659-1673) or Chikka Devaraja Wodeyar (1673-1704)). There was a small weekly market at the corner of this mohalla (village). Later during the regime of Chamaraja Wodeyar IX (1868 - 1894) this weekly market was expanded into the present form. The market retained the name that is associated with the village.
